Curtain Call
You can read the article by clicking the link as well:esportshut.blogspot.ca/2012/10/curtain-call.html. Read and comment. Constructive criticism is always welcome.
I started playing the game back in 2006. It only feels like yesterday when I did not know anything about how one could actually make a living through playing games. But slowly and gradually, I learned about it. I dug deep into the history of the beautiful game and yes I’m talking about Counter-Strike, not football.
The game has given me too many good memories, whether it be playing the game myself or watching my favorite team battling it out for the most prestigious title there was. It was, to me, as good as watching any physical sport. Somehow, it had the same feeling when I saw a good clutch that changed the course of the match compared to a goal scored in a game of football during stoppage time to level the score or win the game. Call me a geek, I don’t care but for me, it was Counter-Strike!
Today, Dreamhack Bucharest (supposedly the last proper LAN tournament of competitive Counter-Strike) is being played. It is already in the final stages. There are not many big teams in attendance but that gives chance to the underdogs of the host nation to make a name for them one last time. The tournament has currently the best team in the world, fnatic (who have for the first time in 7 years had more non-Swedish players in their line-up after they recruited Martin ‘trace’ Heldt in the summer). They are also the favorites to win this tournament. Anexis, another known name to the people who know CS, are amongst the favorites to reach the final and face fnatic for the last title of CS 1.6. The outcome is quite obvious as it seems unlikely that fnatic would be beaten but in this beautiful game, I have always been surprised by the upsets that have taken place. Who knows, Anexis or fnatic might not make it to the final! I’ll keep my fingers crossed till that moment.
As I look back, I remember my first tournament that I followed, World Series of Video Games 2006 Grand Finals in New York City. Seeing Team 3D overcome fnatic in the lower bracket final, watching aTTaX dominate the entire tournament, witnessing the grand final between the North Americans and the Germans was a treat to watch. Since then, watching Dennis “walle” Wallenberg’s 1v5 against PGS at the grandest stage during the WCG, Patrick “f0rest” Lindberg’s amazing performance at the CPL Winter 2006, Filip “neo” Kubski’s dominance at the 1st ever IEM and ESWC. I could go on and on but the list will not end.
Even the smaller LAN tournaments were a treat to watch as you saw some great players displaying their talent and moving forward to play with the “big boys”. We saw Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund, Rasmus “Gux” Stahl, Yegor “markeloff” Markelov, Johan “face” Klasson, Michael “friis” Jorgenson, Andreas “moddii” Fridh and a few others go on to become super-stars from good players. We saw Natus Vincere break all records getting the most prize money in a calendar year. They became the 1st team ever to win all 3 major titles in a single year and the 1st team ever to win 4 major titles in a row (IEM 4 2010, ESWC 2010, WCG 2010 and IEM 5 2011). We saw the Golden 5 travel half way around the world without a sponsor to create one of the biggest upsets ever, beating the unstoppable fnatic at the WCG 2009 to register themselves in the Hall of Fame. We saw them crawl out of a slump in 2010 to become the team of the year in 2011 AGAiN!
And on October 21, 2012, it all ends. We will probably see our favorite players compete in the beautiful game for the very last time. Most of them have moved on to the newer Counter-Strike, Global Offensive. I have not played the game myself so I will not comment or speculate on it. But from what I have heard, it does not look good. Players do not WANT to play the game. The tournaments are not fun to watch. I for one do not feel the excitement about the upcoming CSGO tournaments like I did for 1.6. It just does not feel………right. But there are positives about the game too. It is doing what has not been done for 6 years, that is bring the 1.6 and source communities together. I see players from both games coming together to form teams and playing online scrims.
But will this be as big as the 1.6 competitive scene was a few years back? If this does not work out, will tournaments switch back to 1.6 and source like nothing ever went wrong? Or will this mean the end of FPS games in the competitive world? I fear the latter to be the case. For the sake of competitive FPS, I hope Valve listens to the advice the pros give them in order to make the game better. I for one might not play the game the way I did 1.6 but it would be a sad day for all of us to see the sun set on such an amazing era in such a hideous manner. The memories will always stay with me forever.
Thank you Counter-Strike 1.6, for giving me some of the best times in my short life. I will keep playing the game regardless! <3
Edit: This video shows some of the best moment in CS history.

1.6 4ever bros
my hltv account must be from 2004 or something close, good times
I remember watching some of my very first 1.5 pro-game, an really oldschool match on aztec.. probably with element playing.. the eco tactic @ tr was to hold on base inside and on top of the boxes because you could make money doing nothing on the round.. and I was all lost thinking "dafuck is happening, weird game" :DDD

Thank god to shaGuar ^^
Great blog.
I feel kinda sad, but i'm not even following Dreamhack Bucharest. Haven't watched a single game, i just don't have motivation to watch it, knowing this is the end.
And how the hell did you watch World Series of Video Games 2006 Grand Finals if you started in 2006? I started in about 2007 but i had no idea that 'eSports' existed, only discovered about 2 or 3 years later.

me being the fan of old school cs has nothing to do with when i started playing myself!
mm, I started following pro scene last year, but I'm more interested in @2003 than in 2011-12
I hate life because of this.
u play since 2006 and u re an oldschool?
Old school he says...
Have you ever played CS 1.3/1.5 at your local LAN party?

Cool, you're old-school alright.
Take another old-school(me) for example, I played and followed since 1.3, but stopped in 2006 I think.
And now CS:GO renewed my interest for a bit simply because it's the NEW counter-strike.
As for 1.6 dying, hey guess what, I don't give a damn cause that game is not my religion or smth.
After all CS 1.6 is just a game.

all these "oldschools" who dont give a shit about cs and think that cs:go could get them back
that is your opinion and how you feel about it. my blog is my opinion and the way i feel about it. so good for u!
and yea, CS 1.6 is just a good, but one of the best competitive games ever!

"one of the best competitive games ever"
Not gonna argue with that. But all this fanatical obsession over a game is disturbing to say the least.

you dont have to worry about it so just let it go!

Great blog
Great blog
butthurt Canadian :D
your facebook posts say otherwise :P
Going to miss 1.6, will always be in my heart as the best game I've ever played. I'm sure many of you would agree with me.
Eventually I might like CS:GO, and even now I am trying it out; though no matter how much I like it in the future it won't be the same without 1.6.

All good things must come to an end. 13 years is many life times more than most games. Sure the game can still go on without a pro scene, but there is no denying how profound of a part it has played in this game's history. Not having it anymore just won't be the same :(.
Yea its really sad, I started following the scene around 2002-2003, watching cpls and cal-i matches was so fun back then.
sweet and having fun reading it nice blog stay only in memories goodbye cs 1.6 pros scene........
Really nice read!!
Great blog, you make me cry :')
i played this game since 2003, and i have too many experiences and moments with friends, teammates, etc.
You have done to me remember really nice moments of my life.
I remember when i preferred to be in cybers at the nights before than go to the disco, that were really funny nights, and i don't regret for that.
Thx for this blog!!

first time i read full blog, nice but too small it's many many more great actions and tournaments etc etc...
Yeah, brings back me good memories too, I started back at 2005/2006~ and my first few lans at 2007, if u ever had a chance of winning a lan (any) is a good feeling being the last team to beat everyone. Such good memories, I also back in 08 enjoyed watching this as much as a I do watching any other sport genre such basketball and football. Emotions and everything seeing such a player like NEO giving us a thrilling performance, giving his team EDGE and going outside the box it makes you "live those" emotions with him as spectator and as a player. fantastic what this game has given to us. TBH I really felt that it could make to Olympics, taking in mind what kind of numbers we had for this game (so many countries,6different continents(ESWC,WCG,CPL), it truly gave us a spirit of the Olympics. And after all is a Computer game... ;))

good blog!
CS has died because you guys said that and you guys believe in that... Why the cs started to be considered as a "deading game"? Isn't that's all because of some troll's retarded thread? Just for example, it's hard to say does the God exist? But isn't our faith helps him to be alive? I see the cs death in the same way. Nope, I'm not a nolifer that compares the faith and a game... I have a life, but this game is one of my life's entertainments. Anyway thx for the nice read.

the competitive scene is dead because events and sponsors stopped putting in money for 1.6 not because of trolls!
although there are a lot of people playing 1.6 in PUBs and scrims so you can still enjoy the game!

I was really excited for ESWC CSGO matches. Woke up at 7am to watch due to time zone differences. It's just a matter of giving the game a shot. As you can see, lots of the pros are starting to really enjoy the game the more they play. CS players seem to forget that its a new game and it will take some getting used to..I mean if you want to see the game succeed like it seems you do, put some effort into it. Watch some matches, play a few hundred hours. I have that same feeling I had back in 1.6 and Source as I do for CSGO now. Obviously no one can make you like the game, so I'm not trying to convince you it's good. I admit it needs some work, but because I love CS, I am willing to stick it out through the uncertain times and support the game as much as I can because I WANT it to succeed.
