Experiences at an MBA college
*****************************

Format used in this write-up is as its been taught in my Personal Effectiveness Class (read: A class to learn how to bullshit your way around corporate issues and being confident while doing it while maintaining ‘the straight up dick alpha male posture’.)

[I N T R O D U C T I O N]
I’ve recently joined a Business School to get a Master’s in Business Administration (www.ibsindia.org/) and I’ve been here for approximately 3 weeks and I’ve gained a quite a lot of insight into the mechanism of this college and my ‘colleagues’. I’ll list some interesting observations below.

[B O D Y]
Student Pros – A small number of talented and open minded people who inspire you by their knowledge, attitude and perspective.
Students Cons - During the beginning of my course, everyone was getting acquainted with one another and the general attitude of every person you met was something like this - tiny.cc/iw4kgw.
As few days passed and everyone joined someone’s ‘social circle’\group OR made their own group, the general attitude changed to this - tiny.cc/t04kgw. The public has almost immediately identified their BFF’s for the next 2 years. They have a ‘safe circle’ back in their home towns and they want the same security and reassurance here. Now after defining the unseen boundaries of their groups, to allow someone to join in such a circle requires that the said person conforms to their views and ideology.

My reaction – Identify the awesome people. Give and take awesomeness. Spread awesomeness around.

Pedagogy Pros – First and foremost important, the professors often crack jokes and fortunately 8/10 jokes are funny and lighten the mood when the on going discussion gets heated, confusing, exhaustive, boring. Secondly most (read: 1 out of 5) of the lecturers actually know how to teach and fill the lecture theatre with a kind of positive energy that makes you want to gain whatever knowledge transfer is going on.
Pedagogy Cons – Majority number of professors are not open to the idea of a student cross questioning them which helps in the clear understanding of the concept and is never meant to offend. Such type of indirect learning methodology presented in front of the professor is usually met with this type of succinct non verbal reply – tiny.cc/lr7rgw

The professors also condition the students to cower in class and not ask their doubts even after they have gone through the case studies and learned the accompanying concepts by heart. The first question the professor invariably asks you is – “Why did you naaat understand?” (I’m like - Is that a rhetorcical question or a trick question or what)
or “What is wraang with you? You cant get such a simple caancept?” (No, cause I’me reading these caaancepts for the first time.)
to the very best “I AM NOT HERE TO TEACH YOU, I AM HERE ONLY TO CLARIFY DOUBTS. CONCEPT YOU LEARN ON YOUR OWN” (eh bitch I just asked you a doubt and you’re replying you won’t clarify my doubt BUT you’ll clarify it? Are we playing Catch-22 here?)

We also have a system here where you get 40% of your marks (grades) for ‘Class Participation’ which means you get points for answering questions put up by the professor during the 75 minute lecture. In a class of 80 you can very well imagine the kind of primeval desperation that overpowers a student to answer (and answer he/she will even if it’s utter non sense) and the intellectual learning it entails. Now the kind of colorful responses we get are numerous. E.g.
Prof – “List the primary points that are hampering the stabilization of Cuba’s current economy in the face of the U.S. led trade embargo? “
Student 1 – “Farmers not being allowed to grow drugs by the centralized government.”
Student 2 – “Kill Che Guevera.”
Prof – “Comment on the financial condition of Lawsed’s Food Products Inc. for the financial year xxxx to xxxx”
Student 1 – “Profit sir because no loss has been shown in the income statement.”
Student 2 – “Profit sir because both sides of the balance sheet match.”
Student 3 (me) – “Profit because production cost went down.”

My reaction – Learn key words that will fit into the answer for every question.
Q. “Why is Darian Qaz’s company under a windfall of debts?”
Me. “Because production cost went up.”
Q. “As a manager should you be concentrating on the behavior of the individual or the organization as a whole?”
Me. “You should concentrate on cutting production costs to reach the organization’s full potential.”
Q. “Why is that girl sleeping in my class?”
(and hands go up to answer that too)

[C O N C L U S I O N]
But its not all bad. I don’t want to end this 1st part with a negative impression. I’ve had some good memories in these 3 weeks.

Your school sounds a little strange to me. What kind of school doesn't encourage cross questioning of your professor? It sounds quite unfortunate, but reading that most of your classes are lectures (teachers usually plan out the whole lecture ahead of time and do not allocate much time for questioning) I would assume that they should be able to make time for you outside of class. Even still, it is surprising to me that they don't allow questioning in class, as you said that helps you identify what you are not understanding. They are supposed to "teach" aren't they? :p. I don't know how it works in India, but the fact that you said they view questioning as offensive is just plain weird.

40% class participation?! That's insane. Especially for lecture classes with so many people. Most of my lecture classes had no points for participation and the non lecture classes that did had 10-15% max points for answering questions. Usually if you weren't sleeping in class, answered a few questions and you weren't a douche you would secure all those points for the semester. But I guess you could look it as easy points, especially if you don't do so well on exams.

Don't worry about the social groups, as you said find awesome people. That's pretty much it. Most social groups are full of toolbags anyway. I always laughed at how people would join frats/sororities and call those people their "brothers and sisters" without even knowing them. Bunch of followers if you ask me. Do your own thing. Find some good people to network with and obviously seek out some babes.

Good luck in school my dude.
2012-07-02 05:19:54
Only a few professors allow cross questioning or are comfortable with it :)
They dont see it as offensive but are intimidated by it if someone puts up a point which they are not able to clarify.
Class Participation is a fail teaching methodology which encourages students to talk non sense rather than quality cause the student himself is trying to concentrate on improving his grades while not concentrating on gaining knowledge.
And yes babes <3 Ftw :P (we do have some really hot ones here)
Thank you :)

P.S. laughed out loud, real loud, at the application of the word 'toolbags' Hahaha :D

Only top tier management colleges are good in India rest all are trash. Education is just a money making business in India. Now there is like a mba college on every street in major cities.

Its my 2nd year of mba and I can tell you my college is worse than yours by a huge distance.
2012-07-02 06:56:59
Indian Education for the win :P
2012-07-02 09:32:39
Its not even like top tier management colleges are good :) Even IIM's have douches :P I've seen them :D
For example, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC9TpCo-i_o&fea..

What kinda guy would believe they are in IIM (Watch upto the spellbee thingy) You'll be bored after that :P But I watched the whole thing :) They can't put up their thoughts as it is on their computer screen! Indian measures knowledge by grades, not grades by knowledge :D
I'm sorry, but I'm not doing my MBA, I'm still pursuing Bachelors ^_^
2012-07-02 19:50:44
MBA is the biggest scam as far as academic degrees go, IMO. I speak from my 2 years at IMT Ghaziabad. Insane fun, but not much else.
2012-07-02 07:03:05
IMT Ghaziabad :O Nice one :)
2012-07-02 09:33:12

Hotel Management :\
2012-07-02 09:31:53
I'm sure you have met many celebrities and you know must their real faces.
2012-07-02 09:34:21
Well I've seen a couple and the most noticeable thing about them is how many of them are short :P whereas on screen we are fooled into thinking they are tall cool people.
2012-07-02 09:37:59
I've a friend in Hotel Management and he told me all the celebs(men and women both) are motherfuckers, they only pretend to be nice in front of camera but when the camera is gone they treat ordinary people very badly!
2012-07-02 09:44:29
Well yes, that is very true. Majority of them think the world pops out of their ass :|
2012-07-02 09:47:15

Does the prof. then note down who answers what?

Seems sucky. The one thing I liked most about going from high school -> university was that class participation or attendance was taken out of the picture

2012-07-02 12:48:12
Exactly, the prof does note down who answered and who did not. We have name plates on our seats :\

Brb going to Marketing class now ^_^
