So how many ppl watch sc2, LoL, and Dota2? Just curious
2012-06-18 14:14:36
2 millions at a time
2012-06-18 14:16:19
the LoL final will most likely have over 100k viewers, the sc2 will have even more because it will be shown on national television in Sweden
also, the million dollar DotA2 tournament last year had over 1.5 million viewers

22k for SC2 and it's only round of 16, and the best matches of ro16 have not started yet.
The final will have at around 50k at least.
And for these numbers you have to add the numbers of each barcraft: bars that show the streams and that makes it yet another 1-2 k.
Let's just face it CS1.6 will die, as does SC2 but at least the guys behind SC2 do their best to improve the existing game not to create a new and different game. They only add new units to SC2 to make it more exciting.

MLG said the sc2 tournament had almost 400,000 concurrent viewers on stream. Maybe it was 300,000 but it might score them a deal with PBS and we might see the next MLG on a TV network which is not only huge for blizzard but huge for the entirety of Esports.

Can anybody explain me pls... What's interesting in sc2/dota/LoL streams? Like 2 zergs/pudges/soulstealers running over the map and use the same magic/other shit. I actually have never played this games, so what can be so interesting there? Is there a lot of tactics, ways of playing in disciplines 1x1 like sc2???

u basically said "what's more interesting in basketball/ice hockey/american football" you cant compare these games to cs, they have their own fanbase which is way bigger than cs
2012-06-18 14:55:29
Anything can sound stupid if you put it like that: "guys run around bombsites with guns". I mainly play(ed) CS, but DotA/HoN can be great fun when you understand what's going on.
DotA and HoN are very similar to CS, needing much teamwork and communication as well as individual skills such as map awareness, quick decision making and hero control (last hitting, juking, hitting combination of skills). There are many tactics in DotA and HoN; drafting heroes which work well together and picking counters of opposing team heroes; controlling the map to deny opposing teams farm and ability to move freely; positioning, timing and roles in team fights and/or defending/attacking towers.
If you can't at least accept that some people enjoy a different game to you how do you expect who have never watch an "esport" to appreciate your (or any) game? There are many ignorant/arrogant comments aimed at other games which are very frustrating to read. Good to see someone not jump on the bandwagon and be a little inquisitive about other games.

Thx for explaining and not going mad.
2012-06-19 13:56:22
Well sc2/dota/LoL all takes way more individual skill than CS. You need to micro stuff and watch the whole map all the time. When talking about dota, the streams are really entertaining because of combos and teamwork that is displayed and you can see the overview of these "fights" whereas in cs its just "First person" perspective which is kinda boring. Lets say watching football from a persons perspective by strapping a camera to his head. Would you rather watch like its today from an "overview" perspective or a "First person". Well thats just my opinion and thats why I like dota because it takes teamwork , individual skill and is bloody entertaining with tobi casting it. (:
2012-06-18 17:29:32
don't know anout SC2 since I'm not into that. But HoN, LoL and dota 2 there's alot of teamwork, I'm way more into the LoL scene so I'll go with that, first of all you need to have a strategy with your team, perhaps It's a poke comp or aoe comp and you have to ban champions for whatever comp you're running, for a pokecomp you want to ban for example soraka to have less substain. and later on you need cordination to gankw ith the jungler and whoever is ganking your lane and also requires skill to get kills and minion farm and denying minion farm to your opponent, later on you need ALOT of cordination to win teamfights and 1 single teamfight can change the way a game is going.
2012-06-18 23:13:31
Damn, according to your post and the words like " soraka to have less substain" cs looks pretty easy :)
2012-06-19 14:02:21
Sc1 is considered the hardest pro game to ever be played. Similarly sc2 is extremely difficult. RTS games are very difficult because of the amount of things you need to be doing at once. It would be easier to understand if you played and I love CS 1.6 more than any other game but sc2 is in my honest opinion extremely harder than cs subtracting the team work aspect. It's very difficult to learn and when you do have the game figured out you're still terrible.
It's widely considered the most competitive game ever, despite it being in a 1v1 format. It's the amount of multi-tasking it takes that makes it require so much skill. SC:BW was even more difficult to manage your armies, economy, bases, battles, mini map, and making sure you don't make one wrong move during a fight while continually doing all of this.

I do understand from watching it that you're ALWAYS doing something and handling your units but imo an esport game should be teambased, just my opinion tho

22326 spectators... and people still compare it with LoL or any other game. THIS IS A FPS!... lot more skill involved, less players who are willing to play because of it. So this number is really good for cs, and it does show something to event organizers and sponsors if you ask me.
2012-06-18 14:50:24
Sorry but FPS does not require more skill than sc2/dota/LoL
2012-06-18 17:33:04
You can't compare it that way.
2012-06-19 11:03:28
Of course I can. If you think cs is harder to master than sc you are ignorant.
2012-06-19 11:05:58
Stop with that hatred. I didn't say CS is harder to master.
In Dota everything depends on the whole team, which means you need good skills and a GREAT teamplay.
In Counter-Strike, you need GREAT skill and a good teamplay.
MOBA is MOBA. FPS is FPS. RTS is RTS.

It was around 25K during finals.
2012-06-18 17:21:16
We have to admit it, cs is reaching the end of its life AS A PRO LEVEL SPORT, the game is still very much alive in the community and thats what matters.
I dont understand how you expect a game to go on getting 100k+ viewers for over 12 years.
Send it off with dignity and grace rather than cling on to it and muddle the greatness of the game

players cant do anything about it.
players cant do anything about it.
2012-06-18 17:35:17
Also this was on air while alot of ppl worked, guess most ppl are free from school tho and lets face it, valve puts in money into their dota 2 tournament, LoL puts in money to their tournaments and show the stream in their launcher for ppl that didnt even know dreamhack was right now, HoN also puts money in tournament and tell their customers about the stream. lets go to cs 1.6, there's nothing, valve simply doesnt care about it... I'm sure that this game could still be rocking without graphic and shit, all we really need is updated game client with matchmaking with ranking system, announcements from valve themselves, something like show the stream in gameclient and stuff like this.

More players, higher interest. That's it, it's so easy. LoL didn't have so much viewer in the beginning too.
2012-06-19 17:14:16
Well yeah, I'm getting your point, however, after dota2 gets released it will have a higher playerbase, but the fanbase watching streams won't grow that much, tbh ;). Everyone is already watching the DOTA2 scene and after it gets released not many will be new guys:)

doubt it. many people play the cast in the background and watch it with their game open.

Yeah. RIGHT. So that means the number of CSS players watching any CSS stream is actually below 100?

You should learn to read.
20,000 viewers over SEVERAL streams is horrible. Nobody want 300 viewers here, 1,000 there and 5,000 over there. They want the viewers in one place.
20,000 viewers in general isn't bad, with other words, a 20,000 viewer stream. Divided by several streams, it's horrible.
So learn to read before you try to correct me.

It does in terms of financial business, which is the most important thing withing streaming numbers.
2012-06-19 21:40:17
If there is a broader range of streams, I dont really see the problem. There are streams using casters with several languages, so it's not really relevant to me. You're entitled to have your opinion of course. =)
2012-06-19 21:44:33
Are you really that stupid?
If you organized a LAN and paid Joe Miller to shoutcast it, and also paid for a crew to fix the camerawork and so on, as well as having commercials which is VITAL for your profit; would you like that 8,000 were watching YOUR streams which gives YOU profit, and another 12,000 on MANY other streams which is not linked to you?
You would lose alot of money because alot less people will watch your advertisements and commercials, which is your only income.

The only reason why LOL has more viewers in its' streams is because whenever there is a tournament, you get a message at the beginning of the launcher which redirects you to the stream, if CS had this, trust me, the numbers would be unbelievable.
