SteelSeries last month announced the follow-up to their popular Siberia Full-size Headset, the Siberia v2.
We know the concept from the 5H, where SteelSeries went to update it with a version two, and the same goes for the Siberia, but what has happened since the first Siberia headset hit the streets in 2004? We take a look on the brand new SteelSeries Siberia v2 Full-size Headset.
The looks
Obviously the design is very similar to the first edition of the headset, but a lot has at the same time changed. The first major difference is the "invisible" retractable microphone system which pulls out from the left ear-cup this enables the headset to having just one cord, and not the two as with the v1.
Next big change is the new leather-padded cushions on the ear-cups, which were made of a cloth-material on the first version.
Also the audio- and now microphone controller has been redesigned. The controller is much smaller than the previous one, it also features an on/off switch for the microphone, despite the smaller size, the functionality is the same.
Technical changes
The technical specifications for version two have also been changed quite a lot. SteelSeries have increased the speakers to 50mm, improving frequency response a lot. The first version has a frequency of 18-28.000 Hz, while the new one has 10-28.000 Hz. With the new leather-padded cushions on the ear-cups, the headset will increase outside noise isolation and with the new speakers the sound quality is much better on the second version. The microphone has also changed from an 80-15.000 Hz frequency response, to a 50-16.000 Hz on version two.
The modifications regarding the sound really changes a lot for both games and music. The treble-level is much more noticeable when you play games and for a game like Counter-Strike 1.6, you have a lot of noises which are based on treble, it clearly gives you a better experience in-game, as you notice steps, grenades bouncing on walls etc. The bass has also been improved quite a lot. Most headphones have either too much treble or bass, but SteelSeries really found the right mixture here in my opinion. These changes once again allow you to have a headset for both gaming and music.
Using Siberia v2
From time to time you can get uncomfortable using a headset which is tight on your head. The first version had a bit of that, but this has clearly been improved on version two. I used Siberia v2 ever since I got it, both for music use and gaming. I have yet to notice soar ears or similar things. The light weight of the headset also makes it really comfortable to wear. Also the automatic-headband adjust system seem to have been loosened, compared to the first version, making sure you can wear the headset day and night without problems.
I’m much of a music listener while I work and even travel, and this headset has tremendous sound for music use; at least my needs have been satisfied. With the hidden microphone, it is a headset you can bring even when traveling, without worrying about looking odd. This is something you lack on other headsets, which does not have a hidden microphone, being forced to find another headset when traveling for instance.
I have personally been using Apple’s ear-plugs which come with the iPhone, a pair of really rubbish plugs, which gives you horrible sounds quality. This scenario has clearly been eliminated with Siberia v2, as the plug fits with iPhone and iTouch, allowing you to use the headset for music use when traveling.
For gaming I can only give thumbs up. The sound quality has as mentioned improved a lot and with the closed ear-cups and the thick leather padded cushions built from sound damping foam, the increase of outside noise isolation gives you a much better experience in-game. The feature also gives you an advantage when attending tournaments or LAN parties, as you now block out all the unnecessary noise.
Video review
Conclusion
SteelSeries have clearly listened to the professional gamers who helped build the headset, but also the average user. The changes compared to the first version of Siberia are enormous, even if it does not seem so. They took a popular product and made it even better.
The biggest plus in my eyes is the microphone, making it hidden and getting rid of that extra cord. The changed design on the ear-cups, it being a closed system, compared to the open one used on the first version, also works wonders. Combined with the new speakers and the new leather-padded cushions on the ear-cups, the headset is really a must have.
I personally don’t have anything to point fingers at. I might be easy to satisfy, but there it just nothing negative I can find. You might not like certain things regarding the headset, but that is up to the individual user. With that said, I give the SteelSeries Siberia v2 Full-size Headset 10/10 HLTV.org dots.

SteelSeries Siberia v2 Full-size Headset will be available all over the world in November 2009, the pricing for the headset is yet to be announced, but is expected to be announced in November also.

Yeah, I'd give this review at least 10 DOTS.

obvious commercial tool

Good thing no one is forcing you to 1. visit this site, 2. read the news 3. go by what the news says 4. spend your money on any HLTV.org sponsor gear..
Seriously what the hell do you want from us? SteelSeries sent us a headset for review and Nix gave it a review, if you think it is biased then fine, don't buy it, but this constant fucking nagging about EVERY single thing we do is getting on my nerves to be perfectly honest, every freaking feature except for a few really really resource demanding are free on this site, we go on-site to EVERY big event there is as the ONLY site in the world..
It got a good review because it is good, like most of the SS gear actually is, so what do you want from us? That we say we hate it just because SS sponsor us? The biggest potential drawback here is clearly the price, but since that isn't out it is kind of hard to consider in the review don't you think?!

I think you shouldn't be that impulsive trying to justify your actions just because random guy wrote totally irrelevant thing in my opinion.
If people aren't capable of understanding that 4 things you mentioned then it's their problem. After all people are allowed to write all kind of nonsense on these pages...

I am simply stating things as they are, call it unprofessional or whatever, but this is how HLTV.org has always been run, I like the close interaction with our users, I do not want to separate myself from everyone and only descent from my throne when I feel like it, I interact with all our users and always try to say what is on my mind..
I find it sad that people see this as such a horrible thing, to me it seems way more like you know exactly where you have HLTV.org, there are no hidden agendas or things swept under the rug, I tell things as they are..
Fact is HLTV.org is not a big professional company, we are little 3 man operation just having fun and doing our best, therefore of course it gets personal when the same guys write the same stuff at every newspost.. So take it or leave it, this is how HLTV.org is run, there are plenty of other sites out there if you'd rather have a corporate overlord that will never interact with the community. :)

Fair enough :)

Nomad try to ignore the idiots, every review has some bias, its like me I am always going to say I prefer ZOWIE GEAR for obvious reasons, the guys at HLTV have been doing a great job for years and this site is always the first on the big news. Complaining about a review is just stupid, pay them no attention and they go away.
Nice review Nix

+1, quite subjective review
2009-10-08 17:01:27
I dare you to find an objective review of anything.

isn't every review in the world subjective... ? Someone needs to learn definitions of big words I think...
2009-10-08 18:44:27
agreed, every review is subjective, and if u think nix wrote that just cuz Steelseries are HLTV.org's sponsor, then don't buy it and wait for a "professionnal" review...anyway 1st one was a really good headset, i don't understand why some ppl doubt this one will be too, and call this review "subjective"...
2009-10-08 21:34:23
to be fair your bount to say its good because they sponsor you lol.. i tried the steelseries 5h v2 once and i was shocked at how bad it was made and the sound quality.. but that was the non usb one..
2009-10-08 16:41:16
Seriously it just can't be perfect. It's a gaming headset it shouldn't have the best of sound quality.
2009-10-08 16:48:17
It is of course reviewed as a gaming headset, it may not be what you need as a helicopter pilot, but obviously that is not factored in since this is a gaming website.. We primarily go by CS performance and comfort, and then music.
2009-10-08 16:59:01
Ah, because you stated the use of the headset in Ipod I thought you were saying that it has very good sound quality. But, if you say its perfect for gaming purposes only then ok!
I have to say here, however, that gaming headsets are overpriced and not of such quality to be preffered over the better sound quality headsets because of the Gamign Headset tag. :)
P.S: What will the price be?

2009-10-08 17:13:32
It is not set yet.
2009-10-08 17:14:47
Yeah, i wanted to say what is it expected to be. ^_^
2009-10-08 17:15:49
Well I do not think Nix is enough of a sound expert to review the headset from a music point of view, and I thought it would be pretty obvious to anyone that this is of course reviewed as a CS headset, as that is what this site is all about.. :)
2009-10-08 17:18:56
Yeah I know. But seeing that: I’m much of a music listener while I work and even travel, and this headset has tremendous sound for music use", and also because I am addicted to good sound quality I had to comment. :p
Well anyway, I forgot to mention that this is actually a very good written kai detail filled review. Kudos!

maybe it's perfect for gaming, or are you too retarded to get that? stop whining or do it somewhere else.
2009-10-08 18:27:26
Firsty, I already explained why I thought that this review was also for sound quality. Seconly, I didn't whine.

I might have over-reacted but too many people complains about various stuff instead of being happy about the things hltv.org do, and their efforts to make things better for us.
on topic: nice review, the headset looks good and comfortable. i've recently got a new headset though, so i won't be buying this for a while.

2009-10-08 22:11:38
the only one good thing in this headset is design : >
2009-10-08 16:58:27
Wait till you try it, the difference compared to the previous version is quite big.
2009-10-08 17:00:47
I'm sure i not buy steelseries headphones anymore , i used sibera and 5h v2 with usb they are like headphones for umm 10 euros , only design is more attractive .
P.S
I liked the phones but sound quality is not what i expected and durable of it is kinda shitty or i had bad luck : >

You shouldn't throw it on the ground and stuff, handle with care a bit, they are great. Both the 5H v2 and the Siberia. The sound is amazing really!
2009-10-08 21:36:40
You are joking right ? The 5h ones i had like 6 months and one earcup broke . I send it to SS they send me new one and i was rly taking care about em and the right phone broke after week so ;)
2009-10-08 22:27:54
Just shut the fup you haven't even tried it man seriously STOP WHINING
2009-10-08 21:59:51
Who's whining? He's just stating that he had prevoius version of this headset and it was crap. What's wrong about it? It's his opinion and his right to notify other potential buyers on public forum about his bad interactions with SS headgear. I'm geniuenly worried that you're missing the point of this forum. By the way, ofcourse Nixon couldn't give those bad review, SS is a major sponsor to HLTV and it's obvious. No one is saying that those will be without doubt bad, but when you review your sponsors gear people will point it out. If someone doesn't see the corelation than his either dumb or full of shit.
2009-10-09 09:39:07
WOW
2009-10-08 17:04:26
People who says the review is only made because SteelSeries is a partner of HLTV should just shut their mouth really.
Everybody does it, and even knowing that, the review does not say it is perfect and that you have to buy it. It just states the improvements and gives a first insight of what it should do more than the previous version.
So now please, let it go haters.

Thank you for the review. I think ill stick with my Sennheiser HD 555, but youll never know. If i were looking for a headset, i definetly would buy this!
I was wondering.. Are you gonna do a review out of SS Xai?

Sure if we get one.. :)
2009-10-08 18:21:21
Oh yeah, forgot to ask! Could you do a sound compare to other headsets? Like wich has better base, wich can hear the enemy better etc. It would be nice :) And you could do a microphone test to your video, just record some voice with that mic!

I bet the guys who are bitching saying the review is made to benefit SS as HLTV.org's sponsor only looked at the rating and didn't even read the review.
2009-10-08 17:46:50
Hopefully once it hits the street some of the buyers will remember this thread and post their own opinions regarding the likes and dislikes :)
2009-10-08 18:08:11
Really good review, just wish the people with IQ under 40 could stop replying to every thread you guys do, writing bullshit. Explict the curse.
2009-10-08 18:29:21
I don't like how they made the cords thinner... I recently bought a Siberia neckband and they broke within the first 3 months because I accidentally rolled over the cord with my chair. I was forced to go back to my old Siberias(which have lasted me for over 5 years!) Seems a lot of companies nowadays don't care as much about the durability of their products because they want you to rebuy or buy their new headsets.
2009-10-08 18:31:07
There is no ss product, which won't get under 10 points on hltv.org :D
2009-10-08 18:41:54
Keep your filthy comments to yourself.
2009-10-08 22:27:31
I love my Siberia Neckband so I'm sure this new headset rocks even more, but I must admit a SteelSeries review on HLTV.org is something that can make people laugh and doubt (and in some cases, be stupid too).
2009-10-08 18:43:17
Well sure, and of course you shouldn't take everything we say as gospel, just as you shouldn't do that with anyone..
It is obvious to everyone that SteelSeries is also a HLTV.org advertiser, so if you think we biased the review because of that, well then look at the video and get an idea of how the headset looks, look at the technical details, and then ignore the subjective rating and score..
Maybe it should have been 9/10, but since SS buys advertisement Nix gave it 10/10 instinctively, who knows. SteelSeries gave us the headset and we did a review, just as we have done with other SteelSeries gear before this, but also e.g. Coolermaster Cases, no money changed hands..
And really, durability and price have been the only real drawbacks of both 5H and Siberia v1, and those are both things we cannot assess in this review..
XplayN.com, a Danish site that is not sponsored by SteelSeries gave it 6/6 in their review too btw.. There will be more reviews popping up in the coming days, so there will be ample chance to see if Nix is on dope or if HLTV.org is bought..

If the same reviews were put on fnatic, SK, EG Websites, people would appreciate that i guess without criticising that So or so sponsor them and they review it positively. So you should really not bother such comments. Carry on with the work that your doing. Am very much satisfied with the services that HLTV.org provide.
Is there any alternative website like HLTV where u get the same features like HLTV.org for free? Atleast they (Some users of HLTV.org) need to understand that all this cant be done like a charitable organization for a longtime. I do understand these, Hence i paid for the ViP even though i dont use any of the ViP services. If one cannot promote your sponsors why should they sponsor you or why would they? Am kool with HLTV.org promoting any of their sponsors. All i want is good service.
P.S : Siberia v2 Looks great. Price is my worry :p

mibr too, and they crashed in the group stage. lol!
2009-10-08 18:56:56
maybe they werent able to find a hidden mic
2009-10-08 18:59:28
haha looks nice..but it feels weird when a page that is sponsored by steelseries does a review on a SS product :D...and gives it 10/10 hahaha.
2009-10-08 19:02:54
They're cool, but for me, Razer are better
2009-10-08 19:46:29
I'm actually looking forward to replace my v1 to v2, depends on the price.
2009-10-08 19:48:21
steelseries for leading me in a matter of equipment, plus a headset for your success
2009-10-08 20:04:21
Great review ;)
I'm seriously considering getting this headset, since I feel it's time for me to get a new one. In the past I have owned the precursor, which I liked but it sadly broke. I have also owned Sennheiser and Steelseries 4H headsets, but I remember Siberia as the best.

YES IM GOING TO BUY IT , OTHERWISE I WOULD GET A BAN

No, you certainly will not, your previous comment was deleted because it was all caps and bold, this would be deleted too if it wasn't because I wanted to leave this reply.
2009-10-08 23:28:37
i like the v1, so the v2 will obivously be a lot better.
But i bet the price will be around 100 EUR so upgrade will be excluded in my case :D

judging by other reviews i am not suprised by a 10/10
however if you take the price (unknown currently) into account, it may affect the rating.
It IS possible to have an amazing gaming headset........ for a price.

IT'S A REVIEW GUYS.... no one is forcing you to agree with the reviewer's opinion, so don't assume that the reason for the good review is simply because SteelSeries is sponsoring this site or whatever.

A review has pros and cons. This review had all pros and no cons...

If Nix0n did not find any, it is hard to include them in the review.
Presumably, as some users already have hinted, the prize would be one of them. But, as it is not known for now....

So, ill make a little review of this headset:
Lest start with the shape. Its fits my ears very well, after some playing. First i was like: How the f... should i put this to my head.. After playing 2-4 hours i didnt even notice that i was wearing any headset at all.
Sound quality of this headset is awesome. You can hear your enemies from mile away in an accurate way. Its very easy to wallbang with these, since you know where the enemies are.
Music sounds very nice with these, even I was amazed.
Microphone is the best one i tried yet. It sounds very clear in ventrilo, ts2 etc. Also the "put in" feature is great, so you wont mash it up when you go to lan partys or what ever.
Pros:
+ Sound quality in games
+ Microphone quality & "put in" system
+ Volume adjuster & Microphone mute
Neutral:
Extension cord
Cons:
- Youll have litlle wtf-moment when you try them on.
So at the end i would give this headset
10/10. They are just that great.
Seal of approval by SiSSoS!

I use them without. And my "wtf-moment" was how should this go to my head. I get used to them in a day. I'm still using them :)
