CS:GO free to play during ESWC
By: MIRAA
Time: 2012-10-31 20:09
Event: ESWC 2012
Game: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Valve has announced that it will make CS:GO available to everyone free of charge during the ESWC world finals.

Valve has been working closely with the community and with the ESWC organisers to fine-tune CS:GO as much as possible before the event and will even send its own delegation to Paris to enquire the players about the state of the game.

The ESWC will be the first major international event using CS:GO, and to celebrate this milestone, Valve is making the game free of charge between Thursday at 18:00 and Sunday at 21:00.

Earlier in the week, Valve released an update which finally introduced the much-anticipated spectator client called GO TV.

The CS:GO tournament will also be broadcast via stream in English, French and German, with the ESL's Joe Miller on board to cast the matches.

HLTV.org will be on site to cover the ESWC finals, so stay tuned to our website for all the info on this event.

nice
2012-10-31 20:10:37
indeed. but a little of desperation as well. seems like they realised this tournament must be huge.

gotv + all teams pre-interview + huge price + dreamteam + free to play + all countries
2012-10-31 21:21:49
you don't even know what you're talking about.
2012-10-31 21:37:09
so dumb
2012-11-06 18:38:45
Has happened to CS1.6 a lot of times, except the free of play thing.
2012-10-31 22:39:45
valve do alot of free weekends for other games, so i dont quite see how it is desperation...
2012-11-01 02:30:19
Well considering that they've never done it for any cs title in like a decade, and the fact that CSGO is consistently not even in the top 10 played games on steam stats any more (which is like unheard of for a counterstrike title) it does seem like they're a little desparate, and with good enough reason.
2012-11-01 06:33:33
You have to understand that 1.6 in its prime did not have any competitor FPS's to interrupt its reign. Now virtually every game released is online with a huge network of followers for each game. Now that console online FPS's have overtaken the market, PC games just arent as popular anymore. All that considered, CS:GO was not heavily marketed and it still ranks as the 13th most played game on Steam. I would have to say that's pretty impressive for a brand new game that hasn't made a bold attempt to reach out to new clientele. Give it time and it will reach popularity.
2012-11-01 13:10:41
A valve-released game not even being in the top 10 most played shortly after being released is honestly pathetic. They could literally put a turd in the box and it would still be one of the most played games, like every other game they've released. Its even worse considering it has counter strike in the title, AND its at a ridiculously low $15 price point. The thing is CS1.6 & CSS have both not declined in numbers much (if at all). CSGO just flat out isnt popular, and has been in rapid decline since its launch a couple months ago.
2012-11-01 14:16:40
they did it for source, several times...
2012-11-01 16:03:04
Who are they? Valve, hltv.org or ESWC? You are referring to them all for no apparent reason.
2012-11-01 08:02:02
You don't know what you're saying.
2012-11-01 17:40:19
i will play!
2012-10-31 20:10:49
dopeee
2012-10-31 20:11:01
"We are so excited about this tournament, not only did we send half the CS:GO team to France to watch and talk with the pro players, we also want to make sure all players can view the matches so we are making CS:GO free this weekend! From Thursday at 10am to Sunday at 1pm PST, CS:GO will be available to everyone free of charge."

From valve, hopefully all the pros will give them good feedback.

I will test this.
2012-10-31 20:14:12
good move from valve, hopefully people will enjoy playing it
2012-10-31 20:14:12
cool, will play abit.
2012-10-31 20:15:00
how will this work? We'll be able to play for free for a few days like a trial version, or will be entirely free?
2012-10-31 20:15:49
"Valve is making the game free of charge between Thursday at 18:00 and Sunday at 21:00."
2012-10-31 20:17:56
it doesn't specify whether or not the game will require full purchase after 21:00
2012-10-31 22:04:26
Usually the game becomes greyd out of just removes itself from your games.
2012-10-31 22:08:45
it will.
2012-10-31 22:33:37
You have no idea how steam games work.
2012-10-31 22:41:07
if you don't have a history of playing games that are free for a few days only, then no i guess you don't know how steam games work.

on the other hand, it's not exactly a skill that's going to get you anywhere in life, so if someone has to ask about it on a forum, then they should be ok with that.
2012-10-31 22:46:15
Every steam game that is free, is fully free to play for a given time. It's a no-brainer.

Being a steam user for even few years, you should know that, doesn't matter where it takes you in life.

Life accomplishments and gaming accomplishments are different things. If you are a person to group them together, I wont' judge you but you are in for a bad time.
2012-10-31 22:48:40
I've been playing for more than 7 years now and never cared about how steam worked or about their other games tbh, nothing to be ashamed here.
2012-10-31 23:53:35
indeed, the only steam game I have is 1.6 and I bought a cd in a shop for it.
2012-10-31 23:51:58
instead of saying, why don't you help him, and learn him how the steam games works? if you are an expert, could you share your information to others dont u?

i didnt knew that of f2p by a weekend or during a thime, when i saw PAYDAY: The Heist in my library i was so excited, i thought that steam give me the game forever, but it was just for the weekend, its like sleepK say, if you dont have a history playing games that are free during a certain period of time you have to ask, people like you, that knows all about steam games, can help

sry4bad english
2012-11-01 02:41:13
It's too obvious not to know when you own steam.
From time to time random games with a message "4 days left, etc.." appear in your inventory.
2012-11-01 08:42:44
I never check these things cuz I simply don't give a fuck about other games, so whenever something pops up I immediately close it.
2012-11-01 12:03:15
Its easier just to help rather than being pedantic, posting drivel to 5 different people
2012-11-02 08:10:58
I'll probably try it out.
2012-10-31 20:16:11
Great news! Valve are smart!
2012-10-31 20:17:43

2012-11-01 17:43:27
for the 1.6-ers who didn't play GO yet but he's curious about the gameplay:
for the first time the game might piss you off, if this happens, give the game an another chance, and play it next day.. why im saying this? because after i bought GO and played first time, i wanted my money back, it pissed me that hard me off.. but next day i gave him a 2nd chance, and day by day i started like it more and more, now i play more GO then 1.6

But you can agree on that CS:GO needs some tweaking. Right?
2012-10-31 20:20:59
I think everybody agrees on that. Still a good game though ;)!
2012-10-31 20:23:27
atm i'm fine with the game, gotv needs some fixes, it was a bit buggy when i tested it, so thats all for me.
2012-10-31 20:24:49
EVERYONE agrees that it needs tweaking, even "saucers"
2012-10-31 20:27:29
SOME tweaking?
needs a complete overhaul.

i think this meeting between valve/Hidden Path Entertainment and the pro's will lead to some tweaking. lets hope : p
2012-10-31 20:42:36
now if only valve linked the ESWC info and streams to the front page in-game menu like dota 2 and LoL have done, then you would see increasing viewers ingame/out.
2012-10-31 20:21:16
This^
2012-10-31 20:23:48
by: mejo
#41
i think they already did that...if you just check the main menu in csgo, you could see the announcment of ESWC and a direct link to ESWC page, so all who play cs:go will see shits going down at paris :p
2012-10-31 20:28:42
So they have [in game, not steam menu] links to streams, information such as when the tournament is, etc? If this is true, then they are starting to be ... smart... by copying what they (icefrog) already did in dota 2.

im not sure whether this is what you think ( http://shrani.si/f/3b/vf/BVAm42T/csgo-20121031-212.. ), but its quite good, it hyperlinks you to ESWC's main site
2012-10-31 21:29:27
that's nice, but it is sadly a wall of text, which you know most people won't even bother to read. It is a start though..
2012-10-31 22:05:44
+123456, most players don't know about pro scene
2012-10-31 20:31:29
+9000
2012-10-31 20:39:43
I hope do they so. It's not hard, some simple gui tweaking and thats that!
2012-10-31 21:00:02
They need to do this. Well, I hope so..

Well that's great news for people who want to test out CS:GO TV even if they aren't willing to play the game.

I wonder how many viewers they will get due to this move.
2012-10-31 20:22:18
i bet it will be ~50k on the grind final
2012-10-31 22:03:17
Probably quite a lot.
2012-10-31 22:07:36
Great! Valve is the best company and truly listens to the community!

2012-10-31 20:23:26
looks like they are desperate haha
2012-10-31 20:23:50
Yeah, Valve used to make free game weekends in the past, but when they did it with csgo they're desperate. Yeah, you're totally right.
2012-11-01 17:50:33
sorry if you are butthurt.
2012-11-01 18:06:07
I'm sorry if you don't have any argument or a elaborated opinion.
2012-11-01 18:07:35
"[...] and will even send its own delegation to Paris to enquire the players about the state of the game."

I hope the community will convince them to remove the new 'nades (or to seriously nerf the molotov), to give us the M4 silencer back, at least, and maybe to remove the blurr on the sniper scope while moving...

Probably one of the smartest moves from Valve lately.

Problem is i'd say at least 60 % of people on hltv wont be able to run the game on their computers. Valve need to release fps commands.

2012-10-31 20:36:25
Kinda agree. But someday people WILL upgrade/buy a new computer since it will expire in a couple of years, so I don't personally see it as a problem in the future but maybe for now a lot of "1.6'ers" can't run the game smoothly :)

2012-10-31 20:37:59
Yeh true, but it was womans, tomorrow is male.
2012-10-31 20:40:10
sad that HLTV.org only covering male qualifier

nothing in hot matches :/
2012-10-31 20:49:48
I would like to see if they can make it cross 1.6 in stats now xD
2012-10-31 20:40:22
it did once nearer the release date, but with it now about 30k short of 1.6 I dont see it happening. Hope it does!
2012-10-31 20:51:01
the game costs 13,99e. i will be amazed if this brings more viewers/players. the game costs next to nothing.
2012-10-31 20:46:35
average wage an hour in India is 50cents/usd
2012-10-31 20:49:51
the ones with salary that low won't be buying the game anyway. but you still make a good point
2012-10-31 21:17:34
the ones with that salary don't have a computer capable of running it :P
2012-11-01 10:03:34
the 1 with that salary don't have a computer to play games :S
2012-11-01 19:46:12
Valve nice one !
2012-10-31 20:49:23
Good stuff Valve, you help a remake of a game with better graphics ( which is what we asked for 1.6) with a couple of 1 million dollar tournaments and to the successor of the games that helped you greatly to become what you are now, just make the game free so they can use csgotv and maybe buy it. Good stuff indeed Valve.

Geforce FX5200 ???
2012-10-31 22:12:12
No chance
2012-10-31 22:29:02
doubt it can run decently. i have a athlon x3 450 and a gtx 560ti and i run it at average 80/100fps all low. maps like train (the default one) drop to like 40/50 with smokes, enemies and me shooting. granted my cpu is shite, but still... doubt very much you'll have any luck.
2012-10-31 22:39:32
upgrade you CPU then everything will be fine
2012-11-01 05:49:58

Theres already an update for that in November
2012-10-31 22:29:51
care to link? i'd really like to know where can i see upcoming patches and fixes for csgo.
2012-10-31 22:40:13
Well I can't give you the link. But thats pretty obvious since a lot of people wanted the silencer and movement tweaking. And also someone said its going to be patched in November so it will probably be
2012-10-31 22:44:34
hum, i wouldn't be too confident. hidden path have already said not long ago that they don't plan to add it so... i hope you're right :p
2012-10-31 23:06:48
For some reason Valve took over updating the game from now on. So its quite possible. But we will see

Dammit, GREAT move from Valves half here imo. Come on guys, let's do this!
2012-10-31 23:02:42
wtf we can play csgo ? YEeeeee best game ever!
2012-10-31 23:14:25
Little off-topic, but wonder when SK will put a team under their tag in CS:GO. Rly miss that.. :> It would make this almost complete with teams.

+ NaVi also woulde been great. :) .. but im not sure they will be able to keep their line intact ? What i heard only one not mention any anti-statement about CS:GO is like ... Starix ?
2012-10-31 23:39:52
Who is good enough for the sk tag atm though? Im guessing they will steal a team once some teams make a name for themselfs ... the normal sk way lol.

hahahahahahah
2012-11-01 03:43:55
Typical csgo hater.
2012-11-01 17:54:52
Haha, finally Valve accept that CS:GO it's a flop.
2012-11-01 00:08:39
The pros playing it ("even" those long serving 1.6ers) tell its a whole lots of fun.

But some kidszz in here didnt woke up yet.
2012-11-01 00:24:13
I'm not sure how this is valve accepting its a flop when they've done the same for other games before, this is to get people to try, a strictly marketing move.
2012-11-01 03:21:02

2012-11-01 00:44:23

2012-11-01 00:54:53
hope the numbers of player in CS:ALL will surpass DotA 2
2012-11-01 05:46:43
Smart move by them, something did need to be done to boost the numbers. GL to the GO noobs I guess :D Hopefully it does well
2012-11-01 00:44:45
HAHAHAH this game sucks... big valve fail
2012-11-01 01:24:32
I knew they would make it free to play since no one plays it.

Next move, they draw prizes among players, or pay players directly for playing the game.
2012-11-01 01:41:53
Desesperated move is desesperated ^^

u mad brah?
2012-11-02 04:04:29
good!
2012-11-01 02:20:20
Very good timing valve! i am die-hard 1.6 player. i just got new high-end laptop that supports 3d-like games and am soooo gonna try csgo for the first time+watching the streams at ESWC = epic win. this may change my opinion about go and accept the game as the new "1.6"
2012-11-01 04:37:49
This is a genius move on Valve's part. Lets see if can attract a lot of attention among the still active 1.6 community and maybe through advertising across other gamer communities such as tf2 etc...
2012-11-01 04:46:48
free to play ` very good.!
2012-11-01 06:10:55
GO noobs would so happy seeing this news gudluck noobs have fun
2012-11-01 06:50:19
i bet there will be a lot of people quit the game even before they need to reload the gun..
2012-11-01 07:04:37
:D
2012-11-01 07:54:27
While still in beta-stage, it was quite horrible, lets see if there was any progress.
2012-11-01 07:35:03
smart on valve's part to do this and let people try CS:GO.

Yay, here come the cheats!
2012-11-01 08:40:21
Valve ..... i smell fear ....i mean heck ...who wants to bet in 2-3 years csgo will go the way of tf2 and become f2p
2012-11-01 09:40:49
and then become the most played game on steam whilst valve still make a profit.. wouldn't be a bad move by them in a couple of years
2012-11-01 10:35:52
they still dont get it
2012-11-01 10:10:53
good

2012-11-01 11:16:59
cs:go not worth playing. Its basically CS:Source V2

I dont play fps-games for the higher quality of objects and stuff tbh. I just want to kill people in a smooth environment like CS 1.6

You have to be on 128 tickrate server in order to set cl_updaterate 128.
2012-11-02 08:13:18
shows perfectly how desperate they are and how bad cs:go is doing atm.
2012-11-01 20:05:44

2012-11-01 21:08:33
Can someone help me? I have installed cs-go. But when I´m starting the game the screen goes black for 5 seconds and then it shuts down. Whats the problem?
2012-11-01 22:02:26
pretty much the same here: It seems to launch for like 2 seconds then it just stops lauching.
