Battle of the legends: ELEAGUE First Matchup Predictions

Written by FakeF1agger | 2017-01-10 11:07
Swiss System

The ELEAGUE major marks the first CS:GO Major ever to use the Swiss system for groups. Ever since the start of majors it has also been the group system with 16 teams but finally we get some change.

The switch has been controversial mainly due to the failure of the system at the ESL One New York event which give many CS:GO fans a bad side to the aforementioned system.

In short though it's a good system, 3 wins to get out, 3 loses to be eliminated. With a system like such upsets should be kept to a minimum as teams such as G2 wont be faired in a group involving say SK Gaming, fnatic and FaZe which was a real group in ESL One Cologne 2016 and despite G2 being at their prime the task to beat some of the most elite teams proved too difficult.

Gambit vs. North

Although to many this matchup may seem heavily skewed in the favour of the Danes this matchup is one of the closer games in this list. Despite the Danes rising to prominence as an elite level squad in late 2016 they aren't a solid results team. Sure, they are at the level to be favourites to take the major and defeat elite level teams however they're known for losing to their lesser opponents, namely in recent history losing DreamHack Winter 2016 which was an event they were heavily skewed to win. In the end North (at the time Dignitas) was defeated by both FlipSid3 and Kinguin, failing to clinch a single victory at the event. Gambit is also a dark horse team, always making results they shouldn't and showing immense potential, namely gaining their Legends status at Cologne.

Overall odds should be placed at 40-60 in favour of the Danes.

fnatic vs. G2 eSports

This matchup in my opinion is the most nail-biting of them all, fnatic vs. G2, two legendary names who have fallen heavily in recent times will battle it out to get the first round advantage. Both teams have potential to be the best team in the world and show incredible upset potential for huge names. G2 with names like Richard "shox" Papilion one of the world's finest players and Adil "ScreaM" Benriltom, a player whom arguably has the most pixel perfect aim worldwide. Then on the flipside fnatic has players like Dennis "dennis" Edman the standout star for fnatic in recent history and Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer whom dominated 2015 as the world's best player. However issues will arise for both sides, with G2's rumoured roster changes pondering in their minds it could effect their performance and fnatic's fresh talent Joakim "disco doplan" Gidetun who is fresh into the pro scene may struggle under the pressure. Both teams will struggle in this battle of the legends

Overall odds: 50-50

SK Gaming vs. HellRaisers

Another close matchup that contains an unknown quantity in terms of HellRaisers. HR have proved that with their incredible talents they're able to upset teams that should annihilate them such as their wins over Swedish legends NiP and the rising American squad Cloud0. SK Gaming are coming into this game with a slight handicap in terms of Ricardo "fox" Pacheco whom may have issues with the different language dialects of Portuguese and his arguable skill level compared to the rest of the team. SK Gaming are defending champions this major and are coming in weak with a loss potential to the rising European stars of HellRaisers.

Overall odds: 70-30 for SK Gaming

Virtus.pro vs. OpTic Gaming

Put these teams in a server 5 months ago and you would laugh at the odds the Poles have to take this game, however now the Poles will have to mobilize into action against the dominating force of OpTiC Gaming. Ever since their acquisition of Óscar "mixwell" Cañellas the North American squad has been on a large rise even taking ELEAGUE Season 2 over the Danish stars of Astralis in the finals. Virtus.pro on the other hand has been notorious for destroying NA teams and are yet to lose a BO3 to a North American team since the line up's creation in 2013. Will OpTic finally break the chokehold that the Poles have over North America or will the curse continue?

Overall odds: 50-50

Natus Vincere vs. mousesports

Again a match that should be decisive but simply cannot be said as decisive. Since Na'Vi has gained Oleksander "s1mple" Kostylev he has been raised to stardom as the best player in the world, despite this the squad overall has had their issues namely players like Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács who have lost their stride since his peak in 2016. However Na'Vi has been promising, clinching ESL One New York 2016 making it the first 250k tournament the team has won. Mousesports have a chance to defeat Na'Vi with their star Nikola "NiKo" Kovac having the ability to take over the server single handily, but will he be able to best s1mple in this matchup?

Overall Odds: 70-30 in favour of Na'Vi

Liquid vs. EnVyUs

Again a matchup that simply cannot be predicted in the American Stars Liquid against the French Legends of EnVyUs. Both teams have been on a decline with Liquid arguably being on their last legs before disbanding and EnVyUs with the rumoured creation of the French super team both squads morale will be at a low. Liquid did make it to the finals of Cologne, but will they be able to resist without s1mple?

Overall odds: 50-50

Astralis vs. GODSENT

What should be a decisive victory for the Danes cannot be assured in this matchup. Since the swap with fnatic GODSENT have only disappointed fans and even just yesterday lost to the semi-professional team of PRiDE a team that should be of no match to GODSENT. However the Swedes legendary names make them a danger to any team in the world and for Astralis, despite being the best team in the world currently, may have their victory left to a coin-flip.

Overall odds 60-40 for Astralis.

FlipSid3 vs. FaZe Clan

The only match in this roundup that can be said to be decisive is FaZe Clan vs. FlipSid3. The European squad of FaZe has been on the rise since their signing of Finn "karrigan" Andersen and in my personal opinion could take the Major tournament. FlipSid3 are legends but only by a fluke win over NiP who aren't even in attendance at this event. The European squad cannot afford to be upset by the CIS team and should look to prepare for their 1-0 match.

Overall odds: 20-80 in favour of FaZe

Conclusion

This major is by fair the best we've ever had in terms of teams. Almost every team here can look to win the major in some form and with the streaming of the match on TBS this will be the biggest Major of all time.

Very nice read subbed!

But a few things: FaZe vs. F3. FaZe showed that they can handle F3 yet it wasn't all to convincing. With a team as tactical as F3 and the Upset potential of a Bo1 on the sides this will be closer than 80-20, rather a 60-40. Also Niko is from bosnia)). and astralis is more like 70-30 in lead. But very good!
