The Anti-Strat
2012-02-21 15:08
Our defense mechanisms kick into overdrive every time the CS:S community blames the 1.6 community for not moving on and clinging onto a game from the late 90's, which according to them is in one or the other way responsible for CS:S not getting the due attention that it deserves. The 1.6 community retorts with the gameplay divide between the two versions and explains why the other version makes no competitive sense. I have a lot of questions for you and I want you to answer them the way you - the readers - deem fit.

At this point, I wish to bring your attention to the following article on IGN:
OPINION: Call of Duty is Boring and Needs to Change
http://games.ign.com/articles/121/1217539p1.html

While the aforementioned piece had some facts, it had the disadvantage of being a product of the same pool of thoughts that had given the game an Excellent rating on release. Despite its box office records, if a game can warrant such an opinion, does that strike a nerve somewhere? Is it a group of individuals who toss a positive at you and then try to balance it with a negative just to stir things up? Or does it go to show the conflicts in opinions within a circle of journalists who're trying to break free and finally have?

Is it really all about opinions after all? If ROCCAT decides to market their next product, is it necessary to take a jab at PC gaming? How is the vendor of an unseen and unproven technology then different from those sharply dressed clones with computerized smiles with their smurfs posing next to the countless smartphones that were marketed as the holy grail? Is it really necessary to call 1.6 outdated and graphically unpleasant to highlight CS:S or CS:GO as the next best thing? Do you really think that a gaming platform that is so self sufficient that it will make the PC an obsolete platform in itself exists yet?

In my opinion, a lot of time and effort has been wasted on preparing for rebuttals than being able to justify the quality, appeal, business sense and mass-market of that next best thing or of the original product for that matter. The mentality has that been of devising an anti-strat instead of actually putting enough effort to execute and refine the original idea. The ploy is to sell an idea and make it the de-facto standard. Once done, monopolize it to have things your way. It has lots of nuisance value and no cohesive strength as an idea in its own right. Just another idea/product with just another price tag/PR and just another gullible buyer/believer.

nice blog :)

100% agree. This hits hard with me with shooter developers. It seems over the years the (FPS) gaming industry has failed to replicate counter strike, or unreal tournament. (UT99). All the games nowadays are mostly hype based around graphical advancement and "realism". The mechanics behind the game are badly engineered. They sell, people play them for a week, and they get boring.

The guys who produce COD already know what they are going to put in Black ops 3 and MW 4 to keep it interesting. Real gamers know that the game is the same, even the engines are basically the same, just modified slightly (COD4 was a big step, but all games after that are essentially the same) To slap a $60 price tag on that and charge another $50 for new maps (before even playing the game) is a joke They are controlling the market with crap.

On the other hand I tip my hats to developers like Bethesda, who had a realization in mind, aimed to achieve a level of excellence, and released a quality game. Sure skyrim is buggy and crashes sometimes, but is there another game out like it now? Is their any other company dedicated enough to community to release a modding kit to complement the game and (actually) encourage development and listen to improvement ideas? (sorry Valve) Furthermore I don't think any other company would have the balls to attempt to release the game anyway.

The Elder Scroll series has the same cult following as CS does. The community is very picky and specific about their games, and users are not afraid to voice their opinion. The thing is though Valve has the advantage of having their game online to make this process easier for improvement. Now all they have to do is actually make a good game that does not just attempt to appeal to the masses, but which succeeds to be new and innovative AT THE CORE. If CS:GO does not succeed with this (personally I don't believe it will), we can only hope for CS2 to continue the gameplay found in CS. For this to happen it needs a NEW ENGINE aka GOLDSRC V2. Wake the fuck up Valve, this is 2012 now. :)))))

I'd say Reckoning did a pretty good job of coming close to Skyrim and in some cases, surpassing it. The combat is phenomenal and the AI is smart. In a lot of cases, the AI is spontaneous i.e. they go about their lives instead of waiting in a corner to get killed. In many aspects, I liked Reckoning more than Skyrim.

Valve is actually one of the few companies that have managed to make a complete game out of a mod, for the second time in a row. Their first one was Team Fortress 2 and the second one is Dota 2! Everyone knows about the success TF2 has had with the layered business model where they first release the game and surround it with a robe of additional content. If they want, they have the means to make CS2 what we all want it to be.

Imagine a $1.6 million CS2 tournament..lol!
