Major Tournaments Rankings (2001-2012)
2012-06-08 16:55
Hello everyone !

The last time, I focused on countries, this time it will be on players and teams. I'm not (completely) a robot, so I didn't count for every tournaments, I only took into account the major tournaments.

So what's a major tournament ? Easy. It is CPL Summer, CPL Winter, ESWC, WCG and IEM. Biggest prize money, highest number of teams and these are the tournaments players REALLY want to win.

I removed two of this tournaments for the same reason :

WCG 2001 - CPL Championship 2001 was played at the same time and no top3 team was at WCG.
CPL Summer 2005 - ESWC 2005 was played at the same time and had a way better teamlist.

Players Ranking

Note : Players showed together won all their medals in the same team.

7 Gold Medals

1. Neo/TaZ/kuben/Loord (7-2-2 : 11)

Nobody can touch these guys. 7 wins is just a class above anyone else. And with 11 medals, only one player can compare to them.

5 Gold Medals

5. HeatoN/Potti (5-1-2 : 8)
5. ahl (5-1-2 : 8)
8. LUq (5-1-1 : 7)

HeatoN and Potti. The best duo of the early days of CS. 5 gold medals won in 3 years, that's better than the Poles if you look at the time span. ahl won 4 of his titles with the legendary duo, he added one more at the CPL Winter 2005. And LUq was the player cut from the Golden Five. It was enough to get 5 titles.

4 Gold Medals

9. starix (4-2-1 : 7)
10. Edward/markeloff/Zeus/ceh9 (4-2-0 : 6)
15. fisker (4-1-1 : 6)

Basically Na'Vi players and one former SK 2003. The Ukrainians won 4 major titles in a row, that's a record. It shows how dominant was that team. starix got one more medal thanks to his 3rd place with A-Gaming at WCG 2007.

3 Gold Medals

16. f0rest (3-4-4 : 11)
17. elemeNt (3-3-1 : 7)
18. XeqtR (3-1-1 : 5)

3 Gold Medals, 3 truly mythical players. First f0rest, same total of medals than the Poles. And the last player who could win the 4 major tournaments : CPL Winter 2006, IEM 3, ESWC 2011. With a WCG title, he would be the only player winning the 4 titles. Then you got the two greatest Norwegian players of all time. What's remarkable about them : they won medals with a lot of different players. 19 teammates for elemeNt, 16 for XeqtR. It shows how good they were, they improved a team immediately when they joined.

2 Gold Medals

19. cArn/dsn (2-3-4 : 9)
20. whimp (2-3-1 : 6)
21. GeT_RiGhT (2-3-0 : 5)
22. Rambo/KSharp (2-2-1 : 5)
23. SpawN (2-2-0 : 4)
24. vesslan (2-1-1 : 4)
24. moto (2-1-1 : 4)
24. pasha (2-1-1 : 4)
27. sunman (2-1-0 : 3)
27. vilden (2-1-0 : 3)
29. fRoD/Warden/tr1p/Storm (2-0-0 : 2)

9 medals for cArn and dsn. That total put them right behind the Poles and f0rest. But only two wins and 3 finals lost. Then we have the
first Dane, whimp. Same as cArn/dsn, he lost 3 finals. GeT_RiGhT never had a bronze medal, he played 5 finals, lost 3. Rambo and KSharp are the first american players. What's worth noticing is that he earned 4 of his 5 medals on home soil. Then we got 3 great Swedish players, SpawN, vesslan and vilden. And finally the former coL guys.

1 Gold Medal

Note : I only included players with at least 3 medals. Sorry MiBR/emL/M19/etc.

33. zonic (1-4-2 : 7)
34. RobbaN (1-4-1 : 6)
35. ave (1-3-4 : 8)
36. Sunde (1-3-3 : 7)
37. Gux (1-2-1 : 4)
37. Bullseye (1-2-1 : 4)
37. mJe (1-2-1 : 4)
37. face (1-2-1 : 4)
41. KK (1-2-0 : 3)
41. boms (1-2-0 : 3)
41. shaGuar (1-2-0 : 3)
41. Hyb (1-2-0 : 3)
45. Kapio/Tixo (1-1-1 : 3)
46. Archi (1-0-3 : 4)
47. gore (1-0-2 : 3)

In that group, we got players who lost a lot of finals. zonic and RobbaN where defeated in 4 of their 5 finals. Without surprise we got all the mTw 2008 players : ave, Sunde & mJe. We also got KK, the other star of The Titans team from 2004. Four great Swedish players are here : Gux, face, Archi and Hyb. Two former 3D Players are in that group too : boms and Bullseye. Three mouz players made the cut : Kapio, Tixo and gore. And we also have shaGuar, arguably the best Canadian player ever.

Where are they ?

Note : I added some fan favourite players who never won a major tournament or just one.

cogu/fnx/nak/bruno/KIKO (1-0-0 : 1)
walle : (0-5-1 : 6)
allen (0-2-1 : 3)
solo : (0-2-1 : 3)
zet (0-2-0 : 2)
ins : (0-1-3 : 4)
trace (0-1-3 : 4)
Johnny R (0-1-1 : 2)
REAL (0-1-0 : 1)

5 finals played, 5 lost for walle, that's pretty harsh. And players like solo or zet were never able to grab one major win !

---

Team Ranking

Note : That ranking only shows teams with at least 3 medals. The flags show the nationality of the players who played for that organisation.

1. SK (6-5-4 : 15)
2. NaVi (4-2-0 : 6)
3. PGS (3-0-1 : 4)
4. fnatic (2-3-4 : 9)

6. NoA (1-3-0 : 4)
7. MYM (1-2-0 : 3)
8. mTw (1-1-5 : 7)
9. mouz (1-0-4 : 5)
10. eSTRO (0-2-1 : 3)
11. ALTERNATE (0-1-2 : 3)

If you add WCG 2011 because of prize money, okay, but from participants list, it shouldn't be there :)

Copenhagen Games, DreamHack, maybe even GameGune had a better team list than WCG last year.

I'd say Copenhagen Games now should be considered as the TOP3 major tournament, alongside with IEM & ESWC.

I agree with you but I had to stick with these big tournaments.

GameGune 2007 was a major tournament if you look at the teamlist. And the same can be said about a lot of events.

But the age and the continuity of ESWC, WCG, etc is what make them major tournaments.
2012-06-08 17:26:49
Agreed. 'Big tournaments' are an arbitrary indicator.
2012-06-08 21:22:36
should be norwegian flag on sk (with xeqtr and dark) u put danish flag tehre, and team noa u have put swedish and danish flags for some reason. and u lack some flags on several names. but realy nice job

For NoA it was a mistake, I fixed it.

For SK, I don't add all the different nationalities. I just put the country with the most players. I put the danish flag because SK.dk finished 2nd at ESWC 2005.

Otherwise mouz would have 4 flags :)
2012-06-08 17:30:24
Well, 4 swedes played for NoA: quick, kixer, speedi and Red`. So it's not totally wrong. But I understood what you meant with SK.dk.

WCG 2011 looks like a fail..im tolk about prizes:/ (1st-25k, 2nd-6k, 3d- 3k)
2012-06-08 17:14:15
wcg 2011 wasnt the best lacked some top teams
2012-06-08 17:36:57
You should have tried to make a coefficient based system. Seems to me that the gold medals have to much weight and 2nd&3rd places finishes counts very little.

Overall nice blog, liked the little french words from now and then :d

Well, ave, someone who won only one major tournament said that "one gold medal is probably worth 3 silver"... So I'll stick with what I did :p
2012-06-08 17:31:49
nice bro!!
2012-06-08 17:23:10
good job as always.
btw gOrdiii, nerve players had nicknames, im sure that Stevenson's nickname was "bl00dsh0t" and full lineup from wcg 2002 was: bl00dsh0t, malone, MuG, PhaGe, quik.
you probably could fix it here and in your previous blogs :)
2012-06-08 17:27:24
Oh thanks! I knew about Stevenson but was not able to find the nicknames of the other guys.
2012-06-08 17:36:08
pasha?
2012-06-08 17:43:18
Forgot the big guy ! Added.

Very interesting. I like the players ranking concept.

"Note : I added some fan favourite players who never won a major tournament or just one."
Oh dude...you could add mSx in the list !
2012-06-08 17:48:30
Just for you :

mSx (1-0-0 : 1)

:)
2012-06-08 19:09:59
Delpan ? :)
2012-06-11 12:14:07
Delpan (1-1-0 : 2) !
2012-06-11 20:35:43
Merci ;) , Nice blog.
2012-06-12 09:50:58
Sweden dominating.
2012-06-08 17:59:38
u wrote something in french behind the 3 gold medal winners :P dont understand what it says
2012-06-08 18:09:13
"last one able to win all 4 majors" and, probably "number of teammates"
2012-06-08 18:28:14
awesome blog as always, thanks for sharing

16. f0rest (3-4-4 : 11) Dernier à pouvoir win les 4 majeurs

17. elemeNt (3-3-1 : 7) Nb de mates = 19

why "nb de mates"? i know you meant "number of teammates" but what language is that? :P

2012-06-08 19:11:18

2012-06-08 19:21:20
^^
2012-06-08 19:22:35
u add the CPL Summer 2006 (ISC), but not the grand final (WSVG Grand Finals).. thats kinda random
2012-06-08 18:29:10
I added ISC because it was the CPL Summer that year. I disregard the fact that it was part of the WSVG circuit. Sorry about aTTaX !
2012-06-08 20:26:17
Very interesting blog. gratz gOrdiii!

2012-06-08 19:12:59
Amazing blog as always.
Can you make one with all the tournaments not the national ones tho just international events with top teams like CPH,GameGune,WEM,Dreamhack,IEM Challanges,Kode5,eStars,WSVG,Arbalet etc including this major ones as well, it would be interesting to see which teams and players have most medals.

Good work my friend. Indeed gold medals do far outweigh all others. Its like in GP Racing.. you can be on the podium a million times but if you've never made it to the top step then you wont be remembered as a race winner.

Also I like how this shows the newbies just how good heaton/potti/fisker were in their prime (compared to everyone else at the time).

What about the WEG series? I think first prize was $50,000 the first time when NoA won and not sure how much Begrip got for the season 2 win. But didnt they hold 4 championships with big money prizes? Not enough to be included as a major? Anyway.. good work mate.

You can compare it to a minor IEM tourney/qualifier in 2011, like IEM Guangzhou and IEM New York.
