Future of FPS games
2012-07-05 10:00
Hi HLTV.org community.
Being now for over 5 years active in the esports scene I realized that 2012 is the year where many new FPS games come out.

I was questioning my self what is going to be the next big FPS game that could replace CS as competitive esports game.
I am gonna list all the FPS games we can play 5vs5 and are similar to CS.

tactical intervention
cs:go
cs:promod
crossfire
cs:online
special force
call of duty
cs:s
world of tanks ?
BATTLEFIELD !!!!!!!!!!! [happy now ? :P]
and who knows what else.

Quake like games are going to come out too.
Shootmania,Xonotic,Nexuiz
And Shootmania has a 5vs5 mode so maybe thats going to unite the CS and Quake scene somehow ?

Why cant we simply stay with CS 1.6 ?
Well the answer is simple. If you play it for fun of course you can continue playing it. It like people playing the Golden Pokemon edition even if it is 7 years old or so. Its a nice game!

But if you want to play at sponsored tournaments with your game, you need to evolve! Sponsors see no reason in supporting a 12 year old game that could be played in a mobile phone.
Companies want to sell high quality. Supporting SC2 where all the viewers have a better PC compared to the CS players is much more beneficial for them.

So to return to my question. What is going to be the future 5VS5 FPS game that is going to be featured at tournaments and why ?

Cheers ;)
Stop pls creating this topics about cs 1.6 "dying". Really stupid.
2012-07-05 10:03:48
i didnt say this. did you read the article ?
2012-07-05 10:05:19
But you mentioned it)

2012-07-05 17:24:19
yes in competition ? as you saw ESL dropped it, EStar dropped it. WCG dropped it.
what FPS game could replace or fill the gap?
2012-07-05 17:35:52
Man, be serious please... It might not be dying, but CS 1.6 is hitting rough times... It's not stupid really, it's common sense. A game that is 10+ years old and doesn't have the graphics of the newer games cannot stand up to the likes of CoD.

He didn't say it was dying, but everything he did say, is a valid point.
2012-07-06 00:47:16
I think it will be cs:go,but it would be better to see cspromod as a main title.
2012-07-05 10:09:35
future fps = rush kill without skills
2012-07-05 10:23:15
+100000000000000000

Call of Noobity
2012-07-05 19:52:37
tactical intervention - Only has TDM/VIP/hostage modes;
cs:go - Only if valve delays the game for at least 6 more months;
cs:promod - Doubtful, unless it gets massive hype from the mainstream/casual audience I don't see it achieving much when compared to triple A titles;
crossfire - F2P games don't make good e-sport games;
cs:online - Only available in Asia
special force - F2P games don't make good e-sport games;
call of duty - Not gonna happen.
cs:s - Deader than 1.6
world of tanks ? - Not a fps
Shootmania - Possibly, but too simply at the moment
Xonotic - Dead
Nexuiz - Massive flop
2012-07-05 10:23:27
well cod4 is kinda more alive then cs:s... so why say not gonna happen when it is alive and still going good?
2012-07-05 10:25:02
There isn't much of an audience around it except for the competitive community that supports it. The typical 14 year old teenager will always prefer to play/watch the most recent COD than an old version.

well i am 15 years old and i played all CODs and still enjoy cod4 promod and i play it... anyway
http://beta.xfire.com/games/cod4
as the number says
it is almost so popular as 1.6 in terms of players playing now.
2012-07-05 10:34:01
"It is almost so popular as 1.6 in terms of players playing now."

+1

and COD4 Promod aint RUSH n Kill shit , it requires just as much strats and skills as 1.6 does .

IMO it can be 1.6's successor :)
2012-07-05 11:30:27
well the only thing that cod4 promod doesnt have is economy... thats the difrence between cod4 and 1.6 (not talking about recoil, strafing and stuff)
2012-07-05 12:05:13
lol.
COD francihese sees 40 millions montly but it'snot even e-sport. How much money prizes COD4 has saw?
COD4 isn't an esport. The only FPS game in esports is CS1.6.

"- F2P games don't make good e-sport games"

How comes?
2012-07-05 14:06:52
F2P is free for cheaters as well..
2012-07-05 14:36:29
yeah, but f2p would be a huge thing for esport if someone would solve this cheater-problem. Look at LoL or the impact of making TF2 a f2p-titel.
2012-07-05 14:41:44
1.6 is one of the best(or i may say,the real best) FPS game till now..
and even thats not free from Getting server hacked..
Loop holes are there in almost every other thing we find on PCs..(including lol)
2012-07-05 14:48:05
Yes, but for playing in leagues like ESL and ESEA you need an Steam-ID...

CS got big between 1999 and 2003 because it was free. Everyone got a HL1 key (they were all over the internet, I got 5 keys and I never bought HL1).
2012-07-05 14:52:52
For a F2P game to be profitable you need to offer to the players something that they cannot get through the standard edition, good powerful weapons/champions/perks etc. But by doing this you're constantly affecting the balance of the game and some companies don't care about this and keep adding stuff to the game, making it impossible for a F2P player to stand-up against those who pay, therefore making the game P2W (Pay to Win).
2012-07-05 14:51:44
Hmm...
How about ingame advertisement? In the background of the menu, ...
2012-07-05 14:55:19
The only company who has done that was Id Software (not only remove ads but adding other smaller features that don't affect the gameplay), and now look where Quake Live is in the pro-gaming scene...
2012-07-05 14:59:18
but QL isn't "going down" because of the way of monetizing it.
there are several reasons why QL is struggling, the f2p-thing isn't one of them.
2012-07-05 15:07:47
I agree, but my point was, who would pay for a premium "ad remover" account? You need to offer something exclusive to the players, not some lame options to add flag to the scoreboard etc
2012-07-05 15:18:16
Why offering something special? Having a Intel-menu-background and a Nvidia-loading screen should be enough if hundred thousand people play the game daily...

edit: Of course it's all about how expensive the development of the game is/was. But for a game like CSPromod this would be perfect.

2012-07-05 15:25:41
It's not sustainable for the company, you can't pay a team of devs and host a ton of servers worlwide only with advertising.
2012-07-06 07:12:49
DOTA2 is free (or will be free, because it's officially still in the beta) and it's definitely not pay-to-win.
2012-07-05 19:37:43
Sorry, but did he mention DOTA2?
2012-07-06 00:49:09
Learn to read first, then reply to me.
2012-07-06 06:26:06
He's right though, we were talking about the FPS F2P business model, and there will always be exceptions.
2012-07-06 07:15:53
I still don't see a credible argument for why f2p games should fail by default?
E.g. in LoL f2p players get the same benefits as those who do pay, it only takes them longer. And it's not difficult to unlock all of the bonuses if you're even a 'casual' player, not even mentioning the hardcore ones.
2012-07-06 07:28:52
Because riot invested a lot in tuning the game balance, it's been almost 3 years since LoL was released, they already found the sweet spot between people who are playing for free and those who are paying.
2012-07-06 07:46:54
Soooo....
"F2P games don't make good e-sport games"
If anything, LoL is an example of the contrary.

Unless Black Ops 2 brings really good competetive sceen. We wont see Cod in the future.
2012-07-05 14:26:50
Unless blizzard starts helping out Sledgehammer games or Treyarch to develop a competitive COD from the ground up, I don't see any COD being competitive any time soon.
2012-07-05 14:55:23
So your best pick is CSGO? Fuck yeah!

Valve said they will continue updating GO after release for sure!
2012-07-05 21:43:10
Actually no, CS:GO is really bad as an eSport successor, even with those promises I don't see CS:GO getting any better. (They promised a lot before and during the beta and most of those things never happened)

Shootmania on the other hand, looks and plays really well, I'm having fun playing the game which is something that I don't have while playing CS:GO.
2012-07-06 07:21:02
i dont see world of tanks as a fps game... you dont need reaction or something like that.
2012-07-05 10:24:02
counter strike go
counter strike promod
COD for consoles its actually more active than 1.6 and source together here in italy
in meanwhile i will enjoy BATTLEFIELD 3[another attractive game with a lot of sponsors and a lot of players-teams around the wolrd]..with the hope that promod will not fail.
the next FPS out will be MEDAL OF HONOR but i must wait to see the Beta to talk about it.
2012-07-05 12:01:38
if organisers take off CS1.6 from main title, than i'm sure there will be not game who will replace in FPS Games.
2012-07-05 12:06:28
dude you forgot battlefield 3
2012-07-05 12:43:17
CS:P + Shootmania.
2012-07-05 13:59:02
I don't give a fuck about your opinion and your shitty blog .
CS 4 EVER
2012-07-05 14:17:03
I don't give a fuck about your opinion and your shitty post.

2012-07-05 14:22:52

2012-07-05 15:53:58
you can't kick my ass cuz you're a cunt
2012-07-05 23:17:27
VIVA LA 1.6 !

MMMMMHM
2012-07-05 14:22:18
Dont see a reason as to why CSP is not an able replacement for 1.6..
though progress has been slow..
2012-07-05 14:39:17
CS:GO or CS:P maybe.
2012-07-05 14:49:06
I've tried CS online, it's almost like 1.6 with little differences, but as schypher said "Only available in Asia" and when I say in Asia I mean China and Korea etc..
2012-07-05 15:08:54
yes
2012-07-05 15:32:04
Battlefield 3 The only way or CS:GO with our help :)
2012-07-05 16:02:59
Shootmania easily. European based, lower costs, easy to play and watch. Orgas and Sponsors signed up teams in alpha phase already and its only gonna grow. SM will be the new 1.6 as the king of fps.
2012-07-05 16:35:32
I like watching and playing Shootmania, but imo it has no depth thus it won't be next big competitive FPS.

already some 1.6 players are playing it: harts, da_bears, hostile, drizzer that i know of

have you tried it? i haven't yet
2012-07-05 20:41:06
just got beta access but no, either way game doesnt make esports, whats around of the game will make it
2012-07-05 22:12:53
Sponsors see no reason in supporting a 12 year old game that could be played in a mobile phone.

we here make fun of people who talk shit
2012-07-05 16:41:28
why ?

if you read the interview by carmac you can see for yourself that sponsors don't care if the game itself won't sell new hardware
2012-07-05 20:43:35
I have NEVER heard a single word from any of our sponsors about graphics. In fact, for our event in Shanghai two seasons ago it was Intel that asked us to run a local Chinese DotA tournament. We all know DotA is a game made on a 2002 engine.

Golden Pokemon Edition? Blue Edition till death!
2012-07-05 19:57:27
go promod as arwuen_ did , the best
2012-07-05 20:54:42
I play world of tanks 1 year. Devs fuck free users.
2012-07-05 22:01:31
When DG's reform was being planned, we though about what other games we could branch into, but for now it's just CS 1.6 xD
2012-07-06 00:48:30
