Game filtering
Hey guys,
Finally, some summer vacation from my boring day job, and that means updates for HLTV.org! :)
So, the new big feature I am working on is game filtering, I am sorry to say, but it looks like CS 1.6 might be on its way out, but instead of sitting down crying about it, we are trying to be proactive. But I do realize that some of you are not at all interest in HLTV.org featuring other games, so I figured I'd give you some advanced filtering options.
If you go to www.hltv.org/?pageid=291 (can also be found in the tabs when you go view your own profile) you now got the option to filter out games, currently CS:GO and CS 1.6 are there, but who knows, in the future it might also say CSP, we'll see what the future brings.
Here you can now deselect the content you want to remove, so if you really cannot stand CS:GO news, simply deselect it, and news will disappear from the frontpage, and from the active threads column. As will matches, streams and events.
I am still working on the feature, and some places the filtering might still not be active, e.g. the news archive, demos, and so on, but I'll keep on adding filtering, and feel free to report in if you find content from a game you have deselected, then I'll get right on it.
With that said however I think you guys should keep an open mind and keep all the games enabled, who knows what the future brings, right?

If you are a true 1.6 fan and not a CSGO scrub , you have to filter CSGO so this trash game gains 0 popularity from us.
Oh gosh...
The same was when the switch from 1.5 to 1.6 was happening, I wish more of the community could remember back more than a few months..
oh c'mon dont compare 1.5->1.6 to 1.6->csgo , and I dont know what happened that time I was playing RTCW son.
1.6 seemed pretty horrendous when details were released. it looked like they were changing the game entirely:
nerfed mp5???
new guns???
SHIELD???????????????
nerfed mp5???
new guns???
SHIELD???????????????
haha i'd love to play those years :'(
Good times :D. In retrospect, Steam and 1.6 offered a lot over previous versions. Connecting through WON was the worst thing ever. When you tried to connect to a server, it would count down from some arbitrary number, 110 seconds if I remember correctly, before it would time out,. I'd wait til about 80 before retrying. It wouldn't connect to a server every time. Plus there was no 'favorites' so you were forced to memorize or write down IPs of servers you wanted to play again. There was probably more to complain about, but it was a long time ago :p
I don't know what game you played but for me (1.5 retail) it sure as hell was an option to add favorites. How ever it did have a tendency to remove all the add servers some times if you presses refresh ^^
I'm sure CS:GO will be a great game in 1 year, think of this as an open beta stage of the game, if you have played CSP you'll know how CS 1.6 like can be hl2 engine, so stop crying about it, CS 1.6 had a long process of developing to be the great game it was, now is the turn for something new, deal with it, embrace the change, counter strike forever.
I'd loled at the part when you said "son".
I'm not in favor of CS:GO or something but you are so right sir. The same noise was made when switching from 1.5 to 1.6, up to the point where I refused to try 1.6 until 2005.
Was such a nice period :D something like "1.6 has been launched - OW OW WHAT A SHITYY GAME, LOW GAME, 1.5 FOR THE LIFE" and after 3 months the same people that talked shit about 1.6 were like "1.6 best game ever made, 1.5 is old and shit" yep yep yep nice period ^^, 2bad the majority of the active users are too yound and they don't know what happen, such a nice period to play counter strike, but csgo=salvation.

Dunno, personally I loved it since the beta. Galil and FAMAS are the best thing that ever happened to this game (after removing the idiotic jumping of course).
Invalid argument is invalid. The differences between 1.5 & 1.6 compared to 1.6 & GO are HUGE.
oh yeah then how come we said shit about condition zero and source and also never shifted... 1.6 was the only exception as it turned out to be awesome unlike the other two...
Huh, you remember whats happened with cs:cz and css?
i think CSGO is more like source in that sense it started with big promisses and today you cant really comapre the css commnity to the cs 1.6 community!
and IMHO CSGO in his currect stage is bascliy sh*t at it's core :/
and IMHO CSGO in his currect stage is bascliy sh*t at it's core :/
Im pretty sure most of the active community wasn't around for that switch :)
ps who else misses wonids?
ps who else misses wonids?
totally different case
gj, it was same problem when 1.4 introduced to people, people who played 1.3 was make a lot of noise, because of jumps, and other shits. But look now. Just do what you think its best for this website. Good luck with that!

GJ Nomad, I would really like to see here news from DotA, Quake or other games :)
great but wont be using it for now :)
Happy to hear that, I don't think anyone should use it, but felt the opportunity should be there.. :)
It's a nice feature, but even those who can't stand GO will not unselect it because they want to write "i don't care" and similar shit in every cs:go news. That's sad , but anyway keep up the good work!
Then they will have no excuse if they are punished due to that kind of behaviour.
BYE CSGO
it's a good new feature, but i will keep all them enabled.
Would see the news from the game that it's disgust imo on "ACTIVE THREADS" if i deselect the game?
Let's hope for the best :) Great feature.
lets pretend some cod or unreal gets really big, would you add those games to hltv? or is just for counter strike?

Great thing to do now those who dosen't like CS:GO stfu and filter it so they don't need to read about it!
Awesome! :-)
Will there be any stats? Like how much people deselected cs:go? Just wondering..
That would be nice.
i would like to see that and rofl
Fanboys are jizzing
Good work ;)
Good work ;)
geeewd
great feature... i think with this feature, you will be able to have other games on your community site such as dota2 and LoL... would be awesome
dont push it. This site is only for FPS games !!

well why not? u can always filter the games that you dont want... 1.6 is dead,cs:go wont get popular ... so probably hltv.org wont be so popular in next year after cs:go
"Doubt that will happen anytime soon, we are a Counter-Strike page, but maybe if another FPS game gets really big we'll consider it.. :)"
well the thing about hltv it is the design it is compact and you can get where you want fast... you can see what is going on on forums, what is the next match, when will be the next tournament, the interviews,highlights,blogs... all compact and simple.
i wouldn't mind if hltv started to cover other games ^_^
i've just noticed this, then i saw this blog xD
I don't like cs:go, but won't use the filter, i'm too curious :P
really nice and useful.
now on we dont need to read those retard comments trashtalking csgo
now on we dont need to read those retard comments trashtalking csgo
really nice and useful
now on we dont need to read those retard comments praising csgo
now on we dont need to read those retard comments praising csgo
no one gonna follow this shit game CS:GO its fan of cs1.6
i will, u mad?
Excellent idea, now the haters will stfu.
Correction, now you can troll them with this sentence "and why you have your filter on for cs:go if you say it is that stupid?" (copy_paste it.. you'll need it).
it deserves a news, i guess
I'll follow HLTV.org until the end! No matter if you guys cover Mario Party, I'll go with you guys! But I guess it's a great feature for those who are stuck with a specific version. Hug!
99% of the users will blame me for what I will say but I'll give it a try.
Why don't you add new games to the news section/forum/streams, such as LoL, Dota2 and SC2? I know this site is dedicated to cs comunity, but in the future you might consider changeing this to keep the site alive because the intrest in cs is getting lower and lower (I mean in any cs game from 1.6 to GO).
Edit: and the filter is not working for the Upcoming Matches page.

hm,this website reached record hits featuring 1.6,and comparing to other gaming websites this is by far th ebest so why would they want to put more games to mess things up?
in time one will be required to merge other games to keep this website alive considering the degradation in the number of cs tournaments to cover :-)
As long as you guys don't cover Source, I'm open to any game and will always visit HLTV.org!
haha +1
thats cadreds job :D
thats cadreds job :D
nice, but idk if i willll use it :DD
Nice feature. I was expecting a filter feature for a long time since it's not just about game but it imparts personalization to user's experience. Good work!
Next thing i want and m sure most of the people will agree is the ONLINE CHAT feature and hltv.org's own mailing system. Messaging system is there but my idea is to have xxx@hltv.org, like any other mail.

The feature is helpful but kind of unnecessary. The choice already exists. Don't click on what you don't feel like reading!
Talking about an open mind, how about this:
All old-school gamers have 3 things in common - Quake, CS, Dota. QuakeLive is not doing so well but Dota 2 is. Why not branch out to include just one additional discipline? Some people are gonna say "League of Legends" but that's a separate discussion. Give it a thought.

Well, first of all covering more games will take more staff, that is of course possible, but I also feel each game has something unique that you should include, e.g. we have stats, demos and dreamteam for CS, this will be the same for CS:GO or CSP, but not at all the same for e.g. Dota2.. Of course we could then do a special stats section for Dota2, but then we need some pretty good filtering not to bother people who do not care about Dota2..
I think it is wisest to do what we do best, and that is CS.

I honestly feel the only problem is the current layout. It's all drop-down based instead of tab-based. A common news page with different tabs for CSP, 1.6, GO etc. would be much more intuitive with only relevant content showing beneath each tab as horizontally arranged sub-links. That would eliminate the need for filters and would leave space for any disciplines to be added to the nav-bar later as well in case new doors open up.
My other suggestions include an IRC channel where we all can idle and get simple graphic card, framerate etc. questions sorted. I do understand the tabbed interface might require a lot of movement but it will make things much more intuitive.
Edit: Add official monthly podcast and at least 2 columns by Staff every fortnight to the suggestions list.

and what if someone want to see all the contents of different games at the same time? That isn't possible with the tabbed option. One needs filters. This is just a start but in time this feature will evolve and will be very useful. And besides, having a personalization option never bites rather it adds to good user experience.
In terms of personalization, I'd rather prefer a fixed/fluid theme for the site rather than filters. A common news/home page that aggregates latest stuff from all the tabs is enough if someone wants to see all the content, which is mostly news in case of HLTV.org. Each esport/game can have its own download page or a single Downloads drop-down can list each discipline.
I think the best working site I've seen that implements most of what I'm talking about is Gosugamers.
http://gosugamers.net/general/

Well, the problem with having a common section of latest stuff may still annoy certain users who don't want to see certain things while its good for those looking for a common info. platform.
The problem is that this site is desined keeping only 1.6 in mind and not the other games. I've seen many other websites with infrastructure as u described. But people here are mostly dedicated and loyal to 1.6. They may or maynot(75% of them) like the front page with all the aggregated common news.
A possible solution to this as i see as a user and a developer is to have 'User Page Customization' option. This will have filters at the first level, to select the game, type of content u wanna see(news, demos, DT, etc.) etc.. And then will display the info. in a generic manner. This merely is the combination of your opinion and mine and will provide the best user experience. In addition, this layout will also make it easier to have a mailing and chat system(or IRC channel as u suggested)
And on the admins side, this is surely a daunting task. Will take some time.

Then I think HLTV has no excuse not to support CS:S.
Nomad, we have tournaments here in Argentina, not that big deal but we'd like to see some coverage or some news about this cs scene. thanks :]
btw, thanks for this filtering
btw, thanks for this filtering
I do hope CSGO becomes a success, its time to move on from 1.6. Hopefully the developers add better stuff in the game..anyways i won't be using the filtering option (yet)

I don't get why people with logic are trying to convince the idiots on this forum that the 1.5 > 1.6 change was the same - they clearly weren't around at that time.
CSGO will be fine after patches/tweaks, we just need the ignorant idiots to give it a chance and play more than 2 hours of it (this is coming from a 1.6 diehard and someone who didn't touch CSS).
The crying/sooking from 1.5 > 1.6 was hilarious though, everyone was saying the game will be shit and that they'd be quitting... and we all know how successful it ended up being.

Good!
If we are to save our favorite game, you should not look at VALVE. They do not understand that people want to get the players. They do not realize that the classic counter-strike differs from other games of this hole cards with the minimum elements of physics and precise. The only plus - the new network code, which should give the opportunity to play with great ping, if at all possible. So, the only thing that can now save the discipline, this CSPromod and its mass advertising in the media.
Just wanted to note that the main competitor counter-strike, a dota2. So it is high time to introduce new maps (take an example from esea) and a new tournament system from lurppis.

What I'd like to see is CSP taking over the place of CS 1.6, looks way more promising than CS:GO at this point. But whatever happens happens, at least we'll get some filters.

Just played a session of CS:GO, felt pretty promising actually.

What's your day job?
are u srsly comparing 1.5 to 1.6 from 1.6 to cs GO? your all clueless. 1.6 developed the game, as in console as in server, who cares about some weapons. GO the scenario is totally different is basically source with some cs 1.6 skins maybe..
cs go is a modified cs source. not a modified cs 1.6.. thats what separates the line between "1.5 to 1.6" from cs.16 to go"
who cares about carn and forest that are payed thousands of euros to play. if the community doesnt, they have a few months of paycheck and then leave.
