Areena #1 by SteelSeries
Now that our first tournament is mostly planned and almost everything is taken care of up to now, I figured I'd update the international CS community on it a little bit too. I wrote a blog earlier on SETT.fi in Finnish which some of you might have stumbled across via my Facebook page of Twitter account, but here's a rough translation of at least the most important points.
Just under two weeks ago I was talking to a couple of friends about how it sucks to only play gathers online because obviously CS is infinitely more fun on LAN. I then figured why not host a tournament like it, so within the first few hours we came up with the name, secured a location and prizes and started sign up and Facebook pages for the event. It took us less than 24 hours to fill the tournament's 20 player limit (for four teams) without any advertising.

The first event will be a test run to make sure everything works out fine and I think everyone will have more fun with just four teams as no one will have to get up from their computers during the day, just setup in the morning and play for the entire day. We mentioned the event to some of our good friends so we actually have plenty of old and long since inactive CS players returning for a one-off this weekend, including the likes of barrack, natu, Shiri, toNppa, toomi and Twista.
We have 20 people who already paid for the LAN but just in case someone still doesn't show up, we're also giving out 2x SteelSeries QcK+ mousepads to people who come up to me first as potential stand-ins - whether they end up playing or not is irrelevant, they'll get the mousepads just for showing up so there is an incentive, other than the chance of getting to play.
Teams will be picked on Saturday morning with me, naSu, allu and shaker being the four captains (we tried to pick the four best players to make the teams even). We will then play a group stage for seeding and practice purposes where each team will play each other in a best-of-one game for all 30 rounds. We'll then determine the winners in a best-of-three single elimination bracket. Map pool includes the usual seven maps and maps will be picked using the veto system.
We're not trying to make money with this event so we're handing all the money we receive from sign up fees (20x 15€) back to players in prize money. On top of that, SteelSeries chimed in with tons of hardware and ESEA is also giving some Premium accounts for Areena #1 by SteelSeries.
We've been trying to think of all the issues usual tournaments have and tried to improve some details that events often miss but add to the experience for spectators and fans. Here are some of the things we've implemented for our first tournament. If you have suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below.
We're also still looking for another streamer to casth the matches Rahim can't do (as there will be two matches going on at any given time) and our HLTVs will be public for anyone interested in streaming. We're also seeking a moviemaker to compile a fragmovie to highlight the tournament afterwards - we will have LAN recorded HLTV and POV demos as well as some video footage for you to use.
We're not trying to go overboard with our first tournament as the fact of the matter is, none of us have experience in hosting tournaments before. We are however fairly experienced so I think we should be able to pull it off without too much hassle. The venue is open for spectators so anyone in the area is encouraged to come watch some LAN CS being played!
Cheers

Here are some of the things we've implemented for our first tournament. If you have suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below.
- Public HLTV for every match (HLTV.org)
- GreatFrag stream for matches
- Full statistics from the tournament (HLTV.org)
- Photos from the event (Facebook and SETT.fi)
- Some live video from the event will be posted on YouTube
- Scorebots to keep track of results via IRC
- CS GUIs, models, maps and drivers pre-installed on computers
- LAN Mumble for participants
- LAN servers hosted on-site
- Simple, short rules to make sure people actually read and follow them
- Fun atmosphere; no typing to or yelling at other teams during matches
- All POV and HLTV demos (LAN recorded) will be uploaded to our public SkyDrive after the event
We're also still looking for another streamer to casth the matches Rahim can't do (as there will be two matches going on at any given time) and our HLTVs will be public for anyone interested in streaming. goodluck, i hope we will see some good teams. :)
Nice idea , we did the same thing in algeria but without support of any sponsor , it was very funny.
Nice :) Good job getting allu away from CS:GO for this :D
Good Luck :)
Oh i thought i would try to go there and see if theres any open spots, as i live like 1km away from the venue... But its at 10am.
It's great idea.
Rahim FTW!!!
Rahim FTW!!!
Schedule seems awefully tight :P
mtw and na`vi aren't attending so i don't expect 15min breaks at half, a match should finish in 45mins without overtime and 15mins break should be enough before the next game imo
Why are you so mad?
If it was supposed to be a joke it wasn't even a good one. :(
If it was supposed to be a joke it wasn't even a good one. :(
nothing mad about that comment at all, mtw and na`vi just happen to have those 15min breaks so they have managed to stretch a bo1 overtime game to last 1h45mins
lol :D
mtw and na'vi usually finished their matches/halves pretty fast with scores like 13-2.. so normally even with a 15 min break, they were still on time with the remaining matches/groups :)
gl guys! :) Hope for nice show to watch!

Free HLTV means you can stream, would be nice of you to upload a SteelSereis Overlay, so at least SteelSeries get something in return for their contribution.

didn't read the full sentence in the blog hehe. I'll probably be streaming then if there's free HLTV's, wohoo!
yeah I could put up a steelserieslogo, I've done stuff like that with other sponsors in the past.

im not using shiftwindow, and I do not think i'm joe miller :-)
i appreciate his efford. can't say the same about your hate
I kinda see where he's coming from when I read my post #29 tho. My comment was a bit of a joke because lurppis messaged me and asked for the streamoverlay earlier, maybe I should've explained that but I didn't expect em' haters :P

conte, spikeone and h^n all lives +2hours away - conte plays a gather once a week or so, spikeone hasn't played since last year and h^n plays gathers but is currently playing cs:go more
tihop hasn't played in ~18 months and the same goes for ruuit. aslak started army in july and won't get out at least until january, possibly till july next year.
metaphor has other plans for that day while basic was greedy and didn't want to come until we got steelseries as a sponsor for prizes, so all the spots were gone. jigetus also declined.'
conte, aslak, h^n, metaphor, jigetus and basic all play gathers from time to time still, though.

I instantly knew that lurppis wrote this article when I read:
Captains: me, naSu, allu, shaker
only one person would put himself in front of all the others. everyone else would write: him, him, him, him, me.
