So you want to become a progamer?
2012-09-28 18:56
Hey boys and girls, how's it going?

I wrote this blog on Fnatic.com on how to make it big in eSports, check it out here: www.fnatic.com/news/10121/carn-so-you-want-to-be-a-progamer.html

Furthermore, I'm working on the next episodes of Theory of Counter-Strike and would like ideas for content, what does people want to hear about?
I've yet not played enough CS:GO to make guides in it - sorry :)

Best regards,

Patrik

Well its ok but it didnt really give advice.

Heres some tips, aside from having good gear:

1. Dont play with acceleration. You want to build reflexes.
2. Have a training regime:
2.1 Training Aim
2.2 Training/inventing Tactics(team flash combos etc)
2.3 Watching demos of pros, while asking questions and answering them, and looking at tactics: "Why is he drilling there?","nice combo with teammate flashing and him doing this"
2.4 Learning new drilling spots for bombsites etc(easy with 2 people)
2.5 EXERCISING, that right. If you want to be the best you need to move your body. Potti was a good soccer player when he started cs, Fatality plays tennis etc. The best do sports.
2.6 Putting training into matches, and when you play clan wars PLAY AT YOUR BEST. If you dont have focus to play at your best do something else instead.
2.7 Doing something else than playing: reading a book, doing math; doing something that use your brain and imagination
2.8 Learn to communicate; when you get fragged you say "awp long". Not "OMG IM SO ANNOYED BY THIS GUY..."
3. Have atleast one or two break days a week away from computer, to keep your motivation and focus up.

Example of No-Life training regime:

wakeup 11:00 aim, csdm, watching demos until 15:00

4h break -exercising/playing ball games with friends, then eating lunch and reading a book

19:00 -> 23:00 playing clanwars.
23->1:00 fooling around looking for new drill spots. Or playing games that involve more mousemovement like Quake 3 defrag/CPM/osp, UT,
or csdm.ru where its all vs all
---------------------------------------------

If you want to be the best, you have to excell in other aspects in life, too; mentally and physically. For example many progamers are great with no exercise, yet they never reach their maximum potential because of this.

I agree. If you strive to be a pro gamer you have serious delusional issues. What happens when you reach 20,30,40? You can't be a pro forever then you will be kicking yourself for not using that time more wisely to build a proper career for yourself and maybe eventually your family that you must support. If gaming comes natural to you and you and some friends play leagues in your spare time that is cool, but if you must treat gaming as a job to be good at it, don't bother.

This was good when cs was at his pick and everyone where excited about the game and the progaming scene.
Now i'm not sure how many want to do the same with 1.6/go
2012-09-28 21:24:00
indeed
2012-09-28 21:50:20
Actually... when I was younger and have practiced like a lot my results were not improving as good as I expected...

That schedule you made, well... is quite full of game...

One day without playing and the next one play some 3/5 hours on praccs, 5v5, and other stuff and repeat the process... Best way to push you limits to the max imo ...
2012-09-29 17:40:59
No trust me. You can play 3days on 1day off 3days on 1or 2 days off cycle alot.
You will never be the best by only playing praccs or clanwars.

Why you ask? Heres why:

In csdm and aimmaps you encounter 50x more enemy gun to gun fights literally than in clanmatches, best way to improve your spray n aim control.

By watching demos and inventing tactics you LEARN new stuff 10x faster than by playing only clanwars, and learning from enemies.

You should also incoroporate some kz training to be a fully rounded player, i forgot to mention.

By exercising before clan matches you get good hormones n feel better and more focused, thus you can play another 4h in the afternoon good.

By playing quake or CoD you improve youre overall mouse control since in both games you move at the same time you shoot, in CS you always have to stop to shoot, which makes it more "timing aiming" than "pure aiming"

To be the best esport player you have to train like real athletes with proper sleepcycle, proper nutrition, proper mental and physical training.

yeah right, then why don't you spend like 12h on playing cs and the other hours doing exercises??
2012-09-29 23:28:29
Theres no balance in that. Why do u argue if uve never done it ? Korean starcraftplayers play 10h a day on weekdays, NEO has currenty 86h on steam CSGO, which doesnt include 1.6 or his LoL hours, get right was amazing when he had 107h on steam.

Do you honestly believe you will be at your best by playing 3hours every other day? Even pro bodybuilders go to gym twice a day.

And i dont do it, like i stated before, ivalue school more. Im doing my masters in theoretical physics in helsinki univ.
2012-09-30 08:05:03
Yup... :x

Actually did you heard about one DM event that fnatic made?

I ended up in 2nd --'
Just 20 frags from the first place that had almost 400 frags at the end of it...

And GTR was playing in there I believe...

Btw I value real life more than the game one...
I'm currently doing school again just to improve my marks ( Currently 17,2/20, need 18 for what I want to do in university XD ) ...

2012-10-15 16:01:51
well to the tocs ideas i'd just say that make it in-depth (even if it sacrifices the amount of things u will show on one episode) since quality<quantity! Been a little sad sometimes when things are gone over so fast or shallow when it would definitely need more time & explanation. This being said as an oldschooler.

--edit--

"Practise, practise and practise" :D cool that u use brit english even when writing.. :D

What do* people wanna hear about man

E: I would like to hear/read something about keeping your cool ingame. To stay calm and focused needs you to kinda have "your own thing". Even the best aimers/awpers can really ruin their success by being impatient or too nervous when the shit goes down

E2: Imo the article was a bit superficial what comes to making it

Nice blog cArn, but I'd like to direct you to the fact that most gamers nowadays have entered university and is currently reading some program there.

Do you still think it's possible to become a 'progamer' 2012 on FPS Games, while reading f.ex. Computer Science?

If so, share your ideas on how you would mix these two dedications :)

I think a gamer in general can expect to have his peak around 21-24, but I do expect a wider range of pro players in the future as eSport is becoming more established, and different people begins their careers in different stages.
I do not thing it's game over, but I do not thing FPS will be the main eSport title for a great while, unfortunately. Kids today are much more into RTS, MOBA or even console FPS. Also money dictates which games gets picked up by organizers, and this is quite new besides Painkiller, before at least I feel that game developers did not necessary have to chip in cash to have their game featured.
2012-09-28 19:42:55
so in other words, you think valve has invested in CSGO being featured in place of 1.6?
2012-09-28 20:14:00
Lol.
2012-09-28 21:53:46
Well, I personally believe that the era of FPS-games is over. Matter of fact, there's not enough ROI(Return on investment) to be delivered to the ones who wishes to financially support organizations.

I can imagine that FNATIC had to pitch and pick gamers from other categories in-order to secure the interests from sponsors.

However, I'd say that it's very unlikely for me to strive for becoming professional unless there was a market from the first place.

Kinda saddens me that not even semi-professional players got paid properly in the CS scene. Simply due to the fact that organizations needed to seek interests by supporting other categories such as real time strategy games.

However, if I had one 'wish' for the CS scene. The wish would be that you along people with marketing degrees would cook up something as a LAN-league. Sadly I'm not reading marketing but Computer Science so I can't really understand sales-related in-queries.

You could at least put a paragraph or two in HLTV.org... If this wasn't made by you if would be delete right away.
About the blog itself, great read, and cover the important points, just like i was expecting it.
As far as the Theory of Counter-Strike goes, i can't really give suggestions since i never actually watch them all (although i want to, i just didn't have the patient yet, they're so long lol), but whatever you do i'm pretty sure it will be awesome. Cheers.
2012-09-28 19:36:40
Even tho i'm not even near prolevel in any game, your five points isn't what's keeping me away the most from becoming a progamer. the biggest issue these days is that there isn't any FPS to go pro in unfortunately.
2012-09-28 19:42:01
you forgot to mention to choose your settings as it fits you not the one pro players use

Nice Blog carn tbh ur the only one that takes cs from a studying approach that's why u are one of the best in-game leaders as ur tactics are just analyzed into winning the round by any cost many of the players say aim is better actually its not even near what brain can do maybe aim is better in online events but in lan u can just spray and get the kill and not to worry about becoming the next aimstar aim is just a part of the game but atm all i see are aim freaks in teams and less less smart players
