Charm of cs 1.6 – difficulty or variety?
Introduction
My favourite game is cs 1.6. However don`t take it wrong – it is not like there are no better games around. What I mean is that there is no other game out there which have kept my interest for so long as cs 1.6 did. Other games out there are ineed fun to play, sometimes even more fun to play than 1.6, however it is fun that don`t last for long and after certain point those games are getting boring, as there is nothing new to try in them anymore.
That`s what makes cs 1.6 my favourite game – because it instead have opposite effect - the more I play it, the more I enjoy it. There is always something new I haven`t discovered yet and even my basic skills takes practice to keep them in shape.
Do I enjoy cs because it is difficult?
That`s essentially wrong. Difficulty is just what increases sense of accomplishement, but I don`t enjoy game itself just because it`s difficult.
I enjoy game because of its depth, which allows me to build my own skills and playstyle. To be more exact, I add more and more skills and tricks in my arsenal and therefore I`m itching to use them in combat against worthy opponents.
For example, one day I figure out different style of shooting with glock, another day I figure out one mistake in my playing style that I`ve been doing for years without noticing, another day I figure out how to improve my shooting style, etc – so by going through those discoveries I`m just itchig to play game to try out how those things affects my performance.
But no, it`s not just that, because I enjoy playing cs even when I have no tricks under my sleeve, because its basic combat mechanics are very satisfying and any succesful shot is rewarding and satisfying.
So in essence I can reffer difficulty in cs as just an fair environment to play against worthy opponents. Because there is no worth to beat opponent who is worse than me, because it makes me feel bad to use skills and tricks to beat someone who is playing casually.
Do I enjoy cs due to variety?
That`s another wrong way to define it. There is no worth to find something new in something essentially new anyway. With that I mean to explain that cs isn`t as good just for having good arsenal of weapons or maps, but because those same weapons and maps have depth to be discovered.
Even if any corner and angle in map is found out, it doesn`t stops there, because when taking it to next level, it turns out to be just one of basics in game, because by using that you can start digging deeper, by predicting what opponent is going to do, by making plans during combat how to proceed depending on course of events, etc.
So in essence cs 1.6 isn`t about variety, but about depth of all what already exists in game.
So then – what is that charm which makes me enjoy playing cs?
It is not difficulty and it is not variety. What makes me enjoy playing cs is its competitive environment to play fair game against worthy opponents by using all what I have in my skill arsenal. And second part of it – I still enjoy it to this very day, because potential to improve my skill arsenal feels limitless, as skill ceiling in game is very high. Which means that game doesn`t stop after a single game, but I can always improve and polish my skills further, which makes me want to play more to use them in combat again. And training process itself is something I enjoy as well, because I like playing this game after all.
And what I like the most- game doesn`t favor a single playing style to be the best. You can develop your own unique playing style and so you don`t have to try to be the best at everything in game. So in essence cs 1.6 allows anyone to find his own unique way to combat opponents, it doesn`t force its players to stick with certain overpowered aspect of skills/tactics. Game is everchanging, because what makes it is 2 teams battling against each other and both teams have human players with unrestricted ability to use theyr own unique playing styles to their full extent.
Afterword
Maybe I got a little carried away, but in essence it`s still just my opinion, so forgive for stating part of my opinion in a stronger fashion.
Have fun playing any game you like!

nice read.
btw i will differ in one aspect, variety. may be you look at it differently but i see variety as the different ways in which the game may be played. variety of strats, weapon using techniques and movement styles. they all differ in different situations. so CS has skill, VARIETY of tactics AND a versatile mind to play it! thats the beauty of it!

+1. 'Depth' was the keyword, really sums up why we like the game so much.
Nice read mate.
I just seem to always get bored of new games and coming back to 1.6. No idea why but it just happens, I just can't keep with other games long.

incoming CS:GO fanboys bashing comments
CS 1.6 is dead no matter how you love the game, deal with it
CS 1.6 is dead no matter how you love the game, deal with it
1.6 is 'the game'.
The problem with CS:GO is that Valve/HPE got the whole concept wrong. Instead of building the game around "already sccessfull" 1.6 they decided to build a new game from scratch wth new concepts copied from other "casual" games. Well some of that wasnt bad, but some really sucked and need to be fixed.
I rememeber that when i used to visit steam foums during CS:GO beta, it was filled with retarded CS:GO fanboys who used to hate 1.6ers like anythng. ANything said by any 1.6 player was laughed and flamed like a joke. Venom::zid was banned from steam forums because he used to comment against CS:GO state a lot and used to openly say that the developers are not paying enough attention to pro players in the "special" forums for pros. Those CS:GO fanboys believed that GO is going to break all records in the history of FPS game and it will be huge. I remember comments like:
Go play your 1 pixel game while we will enjoy the awesome new CS:GO
Hey 1.6er we will laugh at you when you all with your community of few thousands will see our huge CS:GO community and you will have to accept the fact that GO > 1.6
Dont listen to 1.6ers, they want all the retarded bugs from 1.6 to be put into CS:GO.
And what happened? Where did the possible 1 million GO community go? Are the CS:GO steam stats bugged and not being counted or actually there is no one playing CSGO now?
So why are we, the 1.6 community, so important? First, we are a huge community. And Valve did and is still doing the biggest mistake by ignoring us. They do not realize that by pleasing us they instatnly get a strong playerbase, a strong community. A community that will play their game for a long long time if its really that good. Now dont give me the bullshit that half of 1.6 community cant afford good comps. If you think that then you should remember the time when CS was a new game with its awesome gameplay and it also needed good system requirements for its time and PEOPLE UPGRADED THEIR COMPUTERS JUST TO PLAY NEW COUNTERSTRIKE in those days. So if the game is really that good, people WILL play it, be it by upgrading their comps or even playing happily in 60 fps.
Now, as zaithaM said in one of his earlier posts, the major issue is with the blind GO fanboys who are ready to accept anything being thrown to them by Valve. Those guys are causing the game to fail much more than 1.6 fanboys. Just imagine a hypothetical scenario that none of 1.6ers were complaining about the game. What would happen? The majority of saucers have no issue with the lower quality of gameplay in GO. They would easily accept the change and CS would be ruined forever.
So the best thing the Valve can do now, to make CS:GO have more players playing:
1> Imporve the gameplay
2> Add something like zaithaM suggested, an awesome interface from where players have access to everything
See, its so easy! Remember that majority of 1.6 fanboys were happy to see GOTV in CSGO because it was something good.
tl;dr for Valve: Fix the game Call of Doody:GO to make it CounterStrike with modern community interactive features and convert your failure to success.

I feel very sad becuase nowadays most born-after-90's people claimed that they can't feel any difference between CS 1.6 and CS:GO except the graphics and most of them prefer realistic and awesome graphics no matter how low the skill needed or skill-cap restricted by the game itself.
In the forums from my country and neighbour countries, there are tons of FPS newbies saying CS:GO is great, and I asked them why, all of them said:" graphics is awesome, some of them even said that they play it because it's Counter Strike with better graphics(they don't even play CS before). You can see how ignorant they are and none of them know the original CS essence.

you said new noobs who didnt play cs ever and now they play go for graphics and they play it beoz its counter strike where did they come from?
Some of them play it because its latest graphics and they just heard the glamorous reputation of CS before but didn't give 1.6 a try because 1.6 graphics is out-dated, they said, they just don't like the old graphics.
Some of them are quite new to cs1.6 and didn't feel the essence of CS(e.g. they don't think bunnyhop is good and some of them don't know what is russian walk, or don't think the recoil did matter)
most of them said the recoil in CS:GO is way easier than 1.6

probably they are noobs playing games for graphics.
yeah so I hate CS:GO being played by too many newbies who only enjoy the graphics...
tbh to much criticize here but i hate these csgo fanboys bcoz they disrespect the game that leads the fps esport scene for 12 years in the history of CS
+1
sorry bro i thought ur CSGO fanboy :D have u ever play the game?
just few hours at cyber cafe using my friend's steam account.
Me myself didn't own this game. Not interested.

i never try not bcoz i dont have a pc to support this game that cant run this game but i dont see cs i see COD or MED or somthing
yeah the movement, weapon model and recoil are very similar with COD but without pressing shift for rush, mouse righclick to aim with iron sight.
COD can throw your knife to kill enemy.
COD > CS:GO =D

And the sad part is that even the graphics aren't that great. So many 2009 fps shooters look better than 2012 CSGO. :P

most born-after 96-97's people calimed that.anyone who is over 17 let's say and has already played cs 1.6 for 3-4 years know what a true game is. Actually the skilled players won't change to go.Unfortunately there are more noobs who could'nt do shit in cs 1.6 that skilled players.
Skilled players among folks won't switch
but pros need money so they have to switch.
but pros need money so they have to switch.
dude. I agree with you. I've met some onliners on indo's scrim server and they said CS:GO is the same as 1.6.
I was confused because I've tried it once and it felt like counter strike:L4D
bleh.

Agreed.
CSGO has really tanked as far as the stats go. It never beat CS 1.6 in steam stats, not on the week it was launched (when it saw most players) and it's even further away now. If only Valve heard it's loyal 1.6 fanbase and did not ditch them for the big fish (hoards of casual gamers) they would have seen a much bigger response. Valve fucked up, big time.
(As they would say here, ghar ki murgi daal baraabar :P)

CS:GO fanboys logic:
In early Beta: STFU 1.6ers, the game is in beta. Valve will improve the game.
In late Beta: STFU 1.6ers, the game is still in beta. Valve will improve the game.
At release: STFU 1.6ers, the game just got released. Valve will improve the game.
2 Months after release: STFU 1.6ers, let the game have couple of tourneys and Valve will improve the game.
2 Years after release: STFU 1.6ers, CS 2 is going to come out soon and it will be awesome. Losers will play 1.6 GO or Sauce, we will laugh at you when you all with your community of few thousands will see our huge CS2 community and you will have to accept the fact that CS2 > 1.6, Sauce and GO.

1st rule of picking a game since old times - always "only" buy good games(it was so much fun picking up games you first played at your friends comp and buy it so that you could hurriedly run back to try on your own pc) ,it's a rarity now with the marketing mechanism.
I am playing cs 1.6 since it was realesed and i cannot imagine me playing NO:GO cuz its not real cs. VALVE CS:GO IS BAD AND U SHOULD FEEL BAD!
where the fuck is CS:GO fanboys?
come on, here is the place you have to insult 1.6 so hard
=)

Getting bored of coming up with excuses for Valve I think. The amount some of these people try, you would think Valve should pay them a wage or something.
LOL
They should get paid for so much dedication
=D

Maybe because the csgo fanboys aren't buthurt 13 year old kids? Are you actually trying to insult someone for not coming on a thread and retardedly flaming?
Just when you think you have seen it all.

finally some CS:GO lover mad at CS 1.6 lover

but since you are a sourcer or maybe CS:GO fanboy you won't agree it or I shall stop talking shit because you don't understand what's going on here and replying with biased thinking.

We need variety in these blogs. Everytime we get same ppl worshipping 1.6, bashing go, +1ing every comment, trying to convince themselves everything that happened post-october is an illusion.
Ifinite boring loop.
How about you ppl write about cats for a change?
Everyday is Caturday! YAY!

Both, there will always be something harder or new in this game: Undiscovered wallbangs and flashes, boost, harder jumps or surf maps, etc. That's what makes it different and better from any other game, there isn´t skill or knowledge cap in cs 1.6.
Welcome to the eSports scene...
I mean, you're not so welcome cuz you are talking bad about 1.6, the game that started everything in eSports...
I mean, you're not so welcome cuz you are talking bad about 1.6, the game that started everything in eSports...
Um... I'll probably get massive amounts of hate here, but I don't particularly hate CS:GO. There is, of course, no way I could ever get the same special feeling watching the pros play CS:GO that I get while watching them play 1.6, but GO isn't bad as far as casual games go. Is it a worthy replacement for 1.6 as an eSport? I'm not so sure about that. If anything, it needs time. Tournament organizers really shouldn't be so quick to jump on the GO bandwagon. The ideal situation would be for tournament organizers to continue supporting 1.6 for another year minimum; by then, any major complaints should be handled in GO. But as of now, 1.6 is still king, and always will be in my eyes.
And as far as I know CS:GO never intended to be "the new cs" It was meant to be a causal console game.
Still I think It's a nice game. I gave it about 75 hours and i can say that you need a lot more teamplay. Because now, 12 years later. The pros only have like basic strats and then goes for pure skill. Just look at fnatic, they said in an interview that their tacts are a bit like: You go there and see if you can make an entry, and you others go there." And then go from there. The only exception that I can think of is ESC. But they got Neo who is insane.
But I still play 1.6 and i enjoy playing it on a amateur level.
