I like our languages because it's actually somehow more exotic than some others. Also it's a very precise language, much more than English for example.
2012-07-09 19:47:51
english is more fluent though... I dont like all those hard letters in German. But if I say ugly language I am talkin about the sound. The content is really good, German literature is great
2012-07-09 21:17:22
Is your mother tongue German? If not, you cant really know how your language sounds to nonspeaking people.I cant speak German and if you care about how German sound to a Greek guy i must tell you that they sound a bit "harsh" or "angry?".I cant put it elseway, though they have their own beauty as every old language.

From my experience, Germany seems to be a pretty nice country. The language is somewhat weird but it's pretty similar to Dutch so I love it :D
2012-07-10 16:56:38
skoraya pomoshch in Russian seems legit
2012-07-09 11:31:06
Russian sometimes sounds to me like someone took some letters, put them in a box, shook it and what comes out is the final word ^^
2012-07-09 12:40:08
nah man that'd be German :)
Russian words usually make perfect sense and they're a bunch of rules according to which new words are derived :)

2012-07-10 12:18:05
Isn't that the same case in German? I never learned the German grammar like foreigners did but they said it's a bit fucked up with many exceptions but in German you can combine many words together (verbs, nouns) and they make perfectly sense. :D
2012-07-10 12:28:28
Germans has far too many exceptions :)
it was a jk btw :)
edit: I learned a bit of Russian in school and I study in Germany :)

i would agree with what the guy below said :
"Germans has far too many exceptions :)"
Russian has rules that define which gender each noun has, as in German there are little rules for that and you can't know 100% which gender a noun is if you are learning the language as a foreigner.

2012-07-09 11:48:50
+1
the word krankenwagen is totally logic. you should look it up. german is a very precise language, much more precise than most other languages. krankenwagen is just a good example for it.
it basically means: "vehicle for the ill".

All languages are logical...the thing that all languages have their own versions of international words!
Unlike most of the languages these words are widely used in German!

"Kugelschreiber" is actually really old-fashioned. Nowadays we say "Kulli" which doesn't sound as ugly as the full-lengthy word. But "Schmetterling" must really sound horrific for a foreigner, I agree :D

oh "kugelschreiber" so funny ahaha.
funny are the words in the other languages. cos they are fucking stupid.
kugelschreiber is much more precise than all the other words. cos the word itsself describes what it is. "kugel" is a small "ball" and schreiber means "writer".
so yea you can keep your crappy languages ;)

"Life is too short to learn German." by Oscar Wilde.
2012-07-09 12:49:07
Taken slightly out of context, but great philosopher nonetheless.

I like German language but people say it's really hard to learn.
2012-07-09 12:53:21
Yep, I know enough people from different nationality that do say the same. Problem with German is that the grammar is not coherent.

I just found it nice, because they got their own language..
2012-07-09 13:30:09
Yes, german is a strange language, they have a lot of unique word for international words.
E.g. television is fernseher. Means "look far away" or something like this.

I've read people think german is an aggresive language and even people from the east said that. Pretty strange because russian sounds super aggresive in my opinion. The german word 'Ambulanz' exists in german as well.
Then I've seen the photo with 'imagination'. The german word Fantasie exists as well. Don't get that point.

+1 most of these images are just so fail and probably made by english speaking people who dont even know german, understand it or understand how a word is put together and what its actual meaning is.
in most of these pics it just shows how precise and extensive the german language is compared to many other european languages.

Staatsangehörigkeit for example.... http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/2..
its wrong. staatsangehörigkeit in english is citizenship.
and in the other languages listed there its translated wrong too.
citizenship (staatsangehörigkeit) and nationality (nationalität) are two different things.
so yea, most of those pics are simply wrong and obviously made by not so smart people.

My friend, who has zero deutch experience could communicate fairly well with the germans we met without english.
I see your point for sure. But it's not like finnish and swedish or english and chinese where nothing is understandable.

Pretty easy to explain, many skandinavian words and german words have the same origin or initially coexisted resulting in a mix that form similar words both in skandinavian and german language.
