The ESL has announced that Natus Vincere will have their IEM5 World Championship earnings reduced by 13 percent.
This decision comes after Na´Vi broke the tournament's rules twice in the semi-final clash with mTw earlier today: the first for leaving the stage without permission at halftime of the second map and the second for calling a timeout to go to the toilet.
For the first infringement, Na´Vi have received three minor penalty points, which will deduct 3 percent off their prize, while for the second infraction, they have been given one major penalty point, which sees 10 percent of their earnings being redistributed by the ESL.
This means that, in case Na´Vi beat Frag eXecutors tomorrow and win the first prize of $35,000, the Ukrainian team will lose $4,550. If the Ukrainian giants finish in second place, they will not get $2,210 of the $17,000 they were supposed to score.

Na´Vi lose 13 percent of earnings
Na´Vi manager Aleksander "ZeroGravity" Kokhanovsky expressed his surprise at the decision, saying: "I think it's unfair because we were drinking water and Red bull during the games, so there is the possibility that one has to go to the toilet."
Kokhanovsky added that, after calling a timeout, a team is given three to five minutes, and that it should make no difference if they go somewhere or just stay chatting during that time.
mTw, who will play the third-place decider against SK Gaming tomorrow, will be deducted three percent off their prize money, also for leaving the stage at the interval of the second map.
All the money that is deducted off teams is redistributed among the remaining participants.
No talk. PLAY
"All the money that is deducted off teams is redistributed among the remaining participants."

Also it is very annoying to play when you need to go toilet. There are two ways to solve this problem.
First: If there is break, allow players to go to toilet.
Second: Make them all buy diaper/nappy/Pampers.
I really prefer the first one :P
these ESL competition are always ruined for me by the semis and final... the games you most want to watch :/
about this thread... that timeout penalty is dumb, if they want to use a TO to go piss it's their choice
And yeah that rule was stupid. But overall for me it has been a good event, not perfect but I dont think I can remeber ANY perfect event :P
"super annoying commentators all non english". Non english? WTF? What stream where you watching? There was RU, PL, ENG, DE stream.
Also lurpis from Power Gaming was CO-Hosting english stream, so it was kinda nice.
and due to lag i had to watch the ru,pl,de stream for many matches... the english stream had the most viewers and so was laggy... and that moronic commentator who was with lurppis...don't know who he was...
Because players never said that THE tournament was a mess. until then you can be quiet or troll anywhere else. Second of all the Rules may sound stupid and be stupid. But rules are rules and you, me,or anyone involve, by watching at home or staying in the building, have to respect them. Maybe next time they'll get lucky and change some of the rules to never had to be this way anymore.
"All the money that is deducted off teams is redistributed among the remaining participants"
pay $4,550 for toilet !_!

If they want to pee, they have to wear Pampers during the games?
That's a full nonsense and rubbish!

Nonsense!
Every rule has and exception - an this 1 of human needs, that can;t be ignored!

poor english sry
Something that actually affects the outcome of the game doesn't get penalized, but something that makes no difference to the match loses them money. I mean going to the bathroom.... seriously?! Just let him shit his pants or what? Stupid ESL.
It's the same with the koreans. ESL needs the korean audience, that's why they have gotten away with pitty protests and rulebreaking
would u wear a diper?
EDIT: guess your bad english got you :D
Post edited 2011-03-04 17:23:13
By the statement "bad English" u meant that i missed a letter "A" in the diaper? LOL
What comes to ESL rules redcode broke them unpunished, and NaVi and mTw being punished for a lesser violation
EDIT: Your english still sucks
Post edited 2011-03-04 18:09:42
my English sucks if r a native speaker English teacher, but sicne u r not, mine -in comparison with your English is perfect ^^
"ESL League is for everyone, so ESL rules are, so then, there be no blood at all - whatever what country players r from - if there are no exceptions -.-"
That's what we call BAD english
And: "i mean - if u were a participant of the ESL League and "didn't want to break the rules", would u wear it?"
Meaning what?
"Zues's piss cost him dearly as admins deducted rounds for every drop spilled ?!?! :-s!
mTw wins cause ceh9 cant keep his penis in his pants!?!? :-s
But I agree NaVi should not be denied the final spot because of this. But at the same time I find the price reduction ridiculous

You're human - They will took your cash...
I almost forget Stream works prefectly...
Players are humans, not robots, I guess ESL didn`t know this :)

The other one is actually more serious - taking a timeout to go to the bathroom. Sure, nature calls and sometimes people just have to go but just pausing the game and going isn't the way to do it. A far better way of going around it is asking the opponents first if it's ok - they're not going to say no. A little courtesy can go a long way, you know?
And the main reason for that decision - you need a time out when you don't actually need one, send one guy to the toilet, have your little break and fill him in later. Simple. I don't think that is what Na'Vi did, but that doesn't matter.
In the end, ESL is paying these people tens of thousands of euros to play a computer game when they have very few demands themselves. It's not difficult and Na'Vi could definitely have done a lot better there.
Obviously ESL cannot prove that Na'Vi actually "abused" the "toilet break" but they have a rule in place for exactly that situation.
I don't see how ESL was wrong in this case. They made a rule, they handed a rulebook out to all players - together with the repercussions for the breaking of each rule - why should they change it now? I'm sure that if Na'Vi had read the rules they would have known what to do.
I'm not expecting every player to read the rules but their manager should have known better and should have informed the players, that's his fucking job after all.
As long as ESL is paying these people money they can make any rule they want. If all players have to wear lingerie during the next IEM then so be it.
Fact is: this rule was in the book, Na'Vi broke it, they take repercussions.
P.S. Also, what about redcode breaking the rules and hadn't been punished? Rules must be rules without exception, right?
I haven't looked at the rulebook, but is there a rule that says that when playing in Germany, players shouldn't have blood turned on? Probably not. As long as that rule isn't in ESL's rulebook, it's not fair for them to punish someone for it - simple.
I haven't looked at the rulebook either so discussion about what is in the rules and what is not seems pretty pointless. But I still think that ESL should focus on the quality of their streams and delays, not on the "toilet issues". The reputation of any orga is being built on things like that.
Another thing what if you want to shit ? Thats the most horrible experience players would feel, smelling the shit of their team mates while playing..
doesn't a team gets to do whatever he wants to do in that time out as long as is within the 5 minutes? or is it because they don't want the players contact with anyone not involved in the match?
anyways next time just pee there, you're not the ones cleaning it anyways XD

You can't forbide someone to go on toilet o.O
Would you like to see a fotball match when players just disappear for toilet when they feel for it? is that right?
next time navi should pee on esl staff on the stage and computers
imo they should change rules
Post edited 2011-03-04 17:35:51
ESL sucking hard but we all still follow the event and that's what counts. We all shoud have boicoted the event to really have any say
In professional scene, in every game, there's something called RULES. Every violation of them must be punished (no exceptions).
So, who gave you the right to talk like that to ESL organization, that organized all this with tournament funds above 100k $.
This is top3 tournament currently, and you're talking crap in ESL favor. Come on people, don't be primitive for first time in your short life.
You shouldnt leave the field when your playing fotball. simple as that.
if cancel that rule, ppl would just say "i need to toilet" when they want to get rid of the other teams momentum or something like that. It is not right. :)
In cs you play one half maybe 30-45 minutes at most.
You come off as a complete idiot, congrats.
Post edited 2011-03-04 18:01:25
Read all the comments in this thread and think who is the real idiot, thx.
Of course it is a shame if the players can't control themselves for 40 minutes, but that is honestly not that long. Go to the toilet before the game and then after each map if needed. Nobody should leave the scene during a game, that is just basic.
So half time isn't an option either. How long would you reckon it generally takes to play e.g. a 26-24 match like the mTw - SK one?
Keeping in mind there's no way of knowing at half time if the match will be over in the minimum amount of rounds or go on and on. With the possibility always being there of an infinite number of overtimes, shouldn't it even be allowed to use the toilet in the timeouts like NaVi?
I don't think you can really blame the players for not being able to control themselves, because the uncertainty may always be there.
If it's true that NaVi was denied bathroom breaks in addition to all that, then ESL should really reconsider these ridiculous penalties.
Post edited 2011-03-06 17:30:43
Also ESL is making tons of money in this, they don't do this for the sake of the community.
And it is only fair to flame ESL since they have done a crappy job in this event
it doesn't matter which teams are concerned, it's just stupid.
toilet first ! b-)
:)))
UPDATE: They really didn't receive prize money for IEM4.

CS is slowly disappearing (France etc.)and now with price-cutting money rewards from reasons like this is just rediculous
tbh if it was me who had to play serious like these guys do and i had to pee at the same time i would not be able to focus on the game.
1 major penalty point for going to the toilet is too much...
we arent in ukraine ;)
this rules have to be followed by russians, ukrainians or germans.
Glad they are getting punished for once.
love it :d
anyway ESL RULES IS Total NONSENSE. Maybe because the admins dont pee

Let's see if those ESL professionals are willing to clean all the urine and feces made by players on stage.
Can't imagine if a player were to fall ill in the middle of the game. Will the whole team get penalized for rushing his teammate to the hospital?
They are a BUSINESS hosting an event for players to ensure fair play. They are hosting a broadcast for 30,000 people (idk the exact number) that are looking to see the match in a timely fashion (you all know you complain about delays anyway). A timeout to go the bathroom in the middle of a map CAN give them an unfair advantage if they recieve help from someone (ie getting told from someone watching the live stream they are smoking mid and pushing 2 every time). That is something that will be very hard to control and the rule should be in place. Going to the bathroom inbetween maps is completely justified since you are on a break of playing.
I cant really think of any good reason why a person cant relieve themself before they are going to play on stage when they know they are going to be up there for an extended period of time. Its like going for a long car ride you always go right before you leave.
I do think it was wrong for Redcode not to get penalized for the blood, but since they didnt make it out of the group anyway what punishment is really needed.

HURR WHO THE FUCK FORCED YOU TO DRINK WATER AND RED BULL DURING THE GAMES?
You get a penalty for breaking the rules? Well no shit.
Of course this is all far too complicated for the 12-year old eastern-Europeans who seem to reign over these forums these days.
Understandable, it must be great to get a few wins after a few hundred years of constant failing.
navi 14.800 :^^^
Fail decision .
I guess they should've asked, or who knows.
this seems stupid, really.
god save you lol
I didnt see the problem at all to be honest. When you organize a tournament like the IEM you need rules (some are discussible but that's NOT THE POINT). The Teams know the rules before the tournament and have an option if they dont accept these rules:
Don't participate. Where is the problem?
They don't act like professionals.
Just make the person who took this decision read this article and maybe just maybe he will see just how FKIN DUMB this is.
I CANT BELIVE THE DUMBFUCKS INVOLVED IN THIS!
"A Major penalty point was awarded for having a nap??
WOW HUMANS NEED TO SLEEP "
Cmon dont post BS arguments just for the heck of it.
You need to define what is allowed in timeouts and what is not. The ESL frame the rule, that the players can relieve themselves in the breaks between the maps and not in the timeouts because they don't want to disrupt the game (and the player's concentration) only cause of someone who needs to take a piss and was too lazy doing it in the break.
The Teammanager should know these rules and it's his fault when the players don't stick to the rules.
ceh9 is just like zet
EPIC

Because he is a pro.
soccer player and other pro player don't go to toilet in games.
- before the match
- in 3x halftime break
- in 2x map break
- after the match
No - it needs to be DURING the match!
trolled that one nicely...
point 1 - it's their decision what to do during the timeout, besides, the other team can do the same..
point 2 - the toilet is the king.. when he calls.. you have to answer :D
Zeus and Edward will never forget this trip to the toilet :)
