HLTV.org is proud to present to you a feature that has been missing in the scene for far too long - Team ranking. In the first edition we will present to you the ranking from the end of August.
Team rankings haven't been taken seriously in the scene for several years now, so we finally decided to put a stop to that. In order to make the feature as credible as possible, many factors need to be considered, so for this job HLTV.org brought in Etienne "reakq" J. who has been working on such very detailed ranking for several months, making his name by displaying his work in our blog section.
The purpose of this ranking will be to, as objectively as possible, rank the teams based on their results and achievements in international tournaments. It's purpose is not to claim that Team A is better than Team B, but to help everyone keep track of the form of top teams and their overall success.
First of all, with this being a new feature, I will explain how it was made.
Initially, each event is given a level from 1-9 based on the following three factors: how well known the event is, the variety of countries represented and the number of top teams in attendance.
Points for each team in each event are then calculated, where a team can win or lose points based on the following factors:
- team's final placing at the event
- winning or drawing a match
- bonus points for defeating a higher ranked opponent (inversely, the higher ranked team will lose points)
- bonus points for round difference
All of these factors give a different amount of points based on the level of the event. For example, getting a top3 placing at IEM5 European Finals brings more points than the same placing at ICSC 8.
Finally, there is a depreciation system in place, which considers the fact how old an event is, decreasing the amount of points distrubuted from previous events as time passes. For example, points gained during IEM5 World Championship in February are in August worth 68% of their initial value. Also, an inactive team will see its place decrease after losing points month after month.
| Events in August |
The ranking includes events dating back from the very beginning of the year, but let's see which August events caused the latest changes.
The new IEM system gave us qualifications for the first Global Challenge in Guangzhou. Temporary secured the American spot by defeating Backfire (although it turns out they won't attend the Chinese event), while Fnatic, Anexis (then known as TCM-Gaming) and mousesports took the Europeans spots.

Without a doubt, the biggest LAN event of the month was e-Stars Seoul 2011 where SK's invincibility was ended by Frag eXecutors. ASUS Summer 2011 was another notable LAN tournament, although less influential.
| e-Stars Seoul 2011 | ASUS Summer 2011 | ||

| 2nd | SK Gaming |
2nd | DTS |
| 3rd | Natus Vincere |
3rd/4th | Lions |
| 4th | mTw |
3rd/4th | Natus Vincere |
After these events, is SK still at the first place? Did Frag eXecutors make up the gap with Na´Vi and SK? What will be mousesports' & WinFakt's place after their e-Stars performances? Are ESC Gaming, M5 and Anexis affected by not attending e-Stars?
| The Top 10 |
Let's take a closer look at the current top 10 teams and what affected their place on the list.
10.
WinFakt
WinFakt boot Lions out of the top 10 and take their 10th place. Even though the Finnish team wasn't able to reach the final step for the Guangzhou GC, they made a very respectable top 6 at e-Stars.

9.
mousesports
After qualifying for the IEM6 GC Guangzhou and a top 6 at the e-Stars, mousesports make a really strong comeback with the best increase of the month (+10 places).

8.
Anexis
Despite of not attending e-Stars, Anexis keep their 8th place thanks to their qualification for the Guangzhou Global Challenge, although mousesports & WinFakt are now very close to the Danish team.

7.
Moscow Five
Even though M5 was inactive during the month, they keep their 7th place despite losing some points.
6.
ESC Gaming
Just like M5, ESC was inactive but stays at their 6th place.
5.
fnatic
Since their victory at the IEM5 European Finals, fnatic seem to have difficulties to climb on the top of big events. The Swedish powerhouse stays at the 5th place, despite in August only winning their ticket for the Guangzhou Global Challenge and finishing at for them disappointing 7-8th place at e-Stars.

mTw
4th at the e-Stars, mTw has not been able to reach the podium contrary to usual. There is now a real gap between the Danish team and the current top 3.

3.
Natus Vincere
The first indisputable team of the top3 is Na´Vi. As SK and Fx are currently winning almost everything, Na´Vi is lurking from behind after a 3rd place at e-Stars and a top4 at ASUS Summer.

2.
Frag eXecutors
Frag eXecutors have made a strong comeback after missing major events DH Summer and GameGune. As the Polish team has won both e-Stars and ASUS Summer, they are the team of the month and those achievements put them at the 2nd place, very close to the top spot.

SK gaming
Despite their defeat against Fx in the e-Stars final, SK keep their 1st place in the ranking, mainly thanks to their 3 successive victories at DreamHack Summer, ICSC8 and GameGune.

If you have any questions about the ranking, feel free to ask in the comments below and of course stay tuned to HLTV.org for the next update at the end of September.
let's go Frag eXecutors, to the top.
I'm not putting down the other teams, but this is my opinion !
is only sad that they are not engaging in counter-strike like last year, if they were, they would score twice in the sk (yn)
I suggest you seek a doctor
SK has (can't argue with this)
the best lineup in the whole world
but fX is the.. hmm how could I say, they are just GREAT on decisive matches and stuff and they are natural WINNERS, they will always be "Titans".
aside that.. I like Navi and all but I believe mTw is the 3rd, they can win against SK and fX
But ye, they are not stable in a year, they are stable for like 5 years winning most major events
e0t
"they are not stable. Not like SK "
Sry, it isnt swedish dreamteam which in 2012 wont be exist, EOT
> the best lineup in the world
Stopped reading there, you're retarded. Hell, when you said 'can't argue with this' it was a pretty massive red flag you're lacking in IQ.
deserved.
*IEM5 European Championship Finals, Group Stage:
Frag eXecutors (16) vs SK Gaming (13)
*IEM5 World Championship, Semi-finals:
Frag eXecutors (2) vs SK Gaming (1)
*Xperia PLAY 2011, Final:
Frag eXecutors (2) vs SK Gaming (0)
*e-Stars Seoul 2011, Upper bracket:
Frag eXecutors (16) vs SK Gaming (9)
*e-Stars Seoul 2011, Final:
Frag eXecutors (2*) vs SK Gaming (1)
FX is unbeatable for SK but yeah, they won LANs where FX can't attend. GG for them. Ahh, I almost forgot, FX lose vs M5 inet match, they are unstable, it's not important that on every LAN they was minimum top3 in this year...
How about that here they finished draw --> http://www.hltv.org/?pageid=28&&offset=0&a..
http://www.hltv.org/?pageid=28&&offset=25&..
http://www.hltv.org/?pageid=28&&offset=25&..
http://www.hltv.org/?pageid=28&&offset=25&..
so dont write bullshits like for Sk Fx are unbeatable and that make you blind polish fanboy

I would comment on the ranking, but I would probably be spammed by the PT guys :|

- ninja - zonix + kapio + approx?
no need for changes
Very nice Job Reakq as usual!!!
Finally a ranking :D
"As the Polish team has won both e-Stars and ASUS Summer, they are the team of the month"
SK are the top team mostly based on previous victories this summer
oh and its spelled August, noob
seeing all the analysis and understanding the work you people have done, hats off to you people.
I seriously <3 HLTV.org
thanks a lot for this great job :)
and +1 for a team going down 1 place.
anyways it was difficult to undertand the rankings :D
fx would be a first, if they went gamegun and DH summer imo

This is referring to the flaws of statistics, which is completely appropriate.
(if not better) and would could have extrmely close matches (if not winning) with dts, firegamers, kerchnet, esahara, virtus, pain... and would almost definitely beat x6, soltec, project_kr, delta, umx, and hsbg.
sad that in 2011 people still label others because of where they are from.
Post edited 2011-09-14 03:44:30
But that's the harsh reality
hope that hsbg will go up and up

1st Frag eXecutors 1st Frag eXecutors
2nd SK Gaming 2nd DTS
3rd Natus Vincere 3rd/4th Lions
4th mTw 3rd/4th Natus Vincere
k.
now maybe fx can beat sk but in overall ranking sk is STILL little higher than fx ;)
Why?
Because some good teams might miss good events because of funding.
What if a team with low funding goes to WCG and ESWC only during the year, and then manage to win them both with 16-5 MAX results against navi, fx, sk, mtw and all.
Meaning they're for sure the best team out there, but with low ammounts of points because of low funding.
Im exaggerating yeah but FX would be top1 if they didnt miss those events
EDIT: just like DTS, events they attend with navi as oponent, Event they manage to win.. or at least beat NAVI

ont: Great job reaq, loved it
4th at DH
2nd at gamegune
Their only bad event was ICSC, because of the lack of practise before the event. kalle was on vacation.
That's why. ;)
Na`Vi > mTw
all years...
before that SK win FX many times this year. So be silent thank you boy.
FX>sk :)
sry man but dont be mad, sk still got some chance in this year
so, after all, SK 7 - 2 FX
LOL
IEM5 World - FX - 2:1
Xperia PLAY - FX - 2:0
E-stars - FX - 16:9/1:1
and what SK win versus FX on big tournaments? not showmatch or this not important :)
who cares about some net games or small tournaments :) stupid fanboys maybe
FX > SK this year sry... but you swedes still got chances, GL haha :)

Altough I think that system shows more like the ranking of team in last year.
I think the previous results should count less than they do now.. FX should be top1 atm.
You should have read what I wrote more carefully..
As I said before, previous results should count less than they do now, meaning that for example the 68% you pointed out, in my opinion it should less than 68% /for example 20%) ...

HLTV.org best cs website by far!
but please make a separate section for ranking where everyone can easily view ranking any time and can easily know who is world no.1 team currently :D

I think the results look reasonably accurate too, and it'll be interesting to see how it progresses over time. Good job!

so the team of the month would be super easy to guess based on those results
yes in team ranking, but looking objectively currently 1.FX 2.SK 3.mTw.. although FX has not been DH Summer, Gamegune..
Post edited 2011-09-12 22:23:55
nice SK :D
You know, like if say DTS beats Na'vi, then na'vi loses points and DTS gains points.
Basically a ladder system.
but good job HLTV.org !

i bet m5 should come inside the top5.

Great for HLTV.org, good for us.
a question: how exactly do you CALCULATE the points. if you did mention it above, i seem 2 have missed it.
and you seem to have missed the fx v sk e-stars final on ferno 19-17.
Now come back so we can BABAM everyone :)
And give them some HooligaN1 shit so they can jerk off!
haha
