The Electronic Sports League has announced the groups for the IEM6 Global Challenge Kiev event taking place at the end of January 2012.
After all the qualifiers for the event have finished as there will be no qualifier in Asia and a team will be invited instead, the groups for the event have now been announced. As usual the event features two groups of four teams with top two teams advancing to the best-of-three single elimination bracket.
If the American and/or Asian teams do not show up to the event, next replacements in line would be mousesports and then the winner of the seventh place decider between Anexis and Natus Vincere, which is yet to be played.
| Group A | Group B |
SK Gaming |
fnatic |
Lions |
Moscow Five |
Evil Geniuses |
WinFakt |
DTS |
Asia |
DTS beat Natus Vincere in the Ukrainian IEM qualifier a while back to earn their spot in Kiev and Evil Geniuses bested their competition in North America for a spot. SK Gaming, fnatic, Lions, Moscow Five and WinFakt qualified yesterday via the European online qualifier.
Prize distribution
1. $16,000 + a spot at the World Championship
2. $8,000 + a spot at the World Championship
3. $4,500
4. $3,100
5-6. $2,200
5-6. $2,200
7-8. $2,000
7-8. $2,000
It is also worth noting that SK Gaming, fnatic and WinFakt have all already qualified for the IEM6 World Championships so if those teams managed to place in the top two, other teams will be awarded spots via the IEM points ranking.
The event will take place at Kiev CyberSports Arena in Ukraine on January 19-22 and HLTV.org will be on site to provide you with full coverage of the last Global Challenge for IEM season six.

It by the way seems like UMX has a lot of money to send their players. Don't they have an Asian squad? Malaysian or something.
and about group b: if mousesports will come to group B instead of Asian team, group B will be totally group of death.

this year there are no groups that are played online and all the spots for world champ teams can get only by participating in global challenges, am i right ?
so why esl has decided not to make an online qualify as before ? thx
season 6: cologne, china, new york, kiev, sao paulo, world finals (6 events)
season 5: shanghai, cologne, new york, kiev, world finals (5 events)
the difference is that instead of having continental championships, the events are global challenges open worldwide, which means more top teams at every event, every event is more exciting
so its a good format for other games but not for cs.
