Last year's number three Martin "trace" Heldt continued in the same manner during 2011 and carried his team mTw more than any other player throughout the year. He was the team's best at almost every tournament he attended, putting in MVP-worthy performances at four of them and shining in many big matches, which this time earned him a very respectable 4th place on our list.
Basic information

Martin "trace" Heldt wasn't quite known internationally before September 2009, which is when he joined mTw to replace retired Jonas "whimp" Svendsen. Already in the following few months after that he proved he had the potential to be one of the world's very best, and he confirmed that thoroughly throughout 2010. Even though mTw won only one major title (DreamHack Summer) during that time, they were always a big contender and a regular top3 finisher. His overall performance earned him the 3rd spot on our Top 20 of 2010 list, while additionally he established himself as the world's best entry fragger.

In the first tournament of 2011, IEM5 European Championship Finals, mTw would have their second test with the new in-game leader Timm "ArcadioN" Henriksen who joined in October, previously finishing second at DreamHack Winter. They didn't really excel in the group stage, having 2 wins, a draw and 2 losses, but they made it through to the quarter-final. After defeating Lions without much trouble, they faced a difficult match against Frag eXecutors, which went down to the wire and the Danes came out happier. Still, on the next day, they lost the final despite taking the first map against fnatic.
Heldt was the main reason mTw made it that far, as he was one of the stars of the event. He finished with the 2nd best rating of all players (1.23), had by far the most kills (308) and was the one who carried his team the most with rating 20% above team's average. Additionally, he excelled in his new role of the team's primary AWPer, having the most kills with the big green (102) and the 2nd best average (0.27 awpKPR).
He was top rated in 5 maps, particularly impressing in the quarter-final against Lions, where he had a 31:7 score in the first map and a 2.24 rating, which turned out to be one of the highest anyone achieved in a playoff match between top teams all year long. After all that he ended up with an MVP nomination, and although he didn't win, he was selected for the All-Star lineup.

mTw's next chance to prove themselves was at IEM5 World Championship, where things started brightly as they topped their group with convincing victories 16-3 over Fx and 16-7 over Moscow Five, among others. However, that set them up with a semi-final encounter against Natus Vincere, their arch-enemy and the team they were never able to beat. History repeated itself and the Danes were left with a 3rd place battle against SK Gaming, which they managed to win eventually.
Heldt was again the main threat from his team, recording a 1.18 rating and getting another MVP nomination. He wasn't as impressive as in the previous tournament, but his AWP was on the same level (0.27 awpKPR) and he impressed during team's winning run in the group stage. Especially amazing was his first match of the tournament, where he recorded his year-highest 2.65 rating in a 16-2 win over TCM (27:5 score). Although he wasn't selected as the MVP this time either, he made it into another All-Star lineup.

HLTV.org's Xperia PLAY prelude followed for mTw, where they finished in 2nd place behind SK Gaming. Heldt didn't fail to leave his mark on this occasion either, ending up 3rd best rated of the event with a 1.27 rating.

At Xperia PLAY they had a similar campaign to the one in Germany, only this time they were stopped by Frag eXecutors in a similar match but reverse outcome to their match from Kiev. They had to settle for another 3rd place, although the encounter with RG-Esports was never played and the team's ended up sharing the prize and the position.
Heldt continued with his impressive form, starring for the team once again with a 1.25 rating. He played consistently well with 10 of 13 rated above 1.00, while he especially stood out during the second group stage 16-7 win over Moscow Five (29:11 score, 1.91 rating). Later, he excelled in the quarter-final against fnatic when he recorded a rating 34% above team's average in the three maps (61:38 score, 1.41 rating). Additionally, he was one of the best clutchers of the tournament with 9 rounds won when left alone. Once again the MVP title slipped from his hands, but he was selected for the 3rd time in an All-Star lineup.

At DreamHack Summer, mTw had a great performance, which unfortunately once again ended with a loss in the final, now to the refreshed and newly motivated SK Gaming lineup. Heldt had another impressive performance, his best yet, and the organizers awarded him with the title of Most Valuable Player.
He recorded the second best rating of the event (1.27), while being the most consistent and the second most dominant player. He also accumulated the most kills (267) and was the 2nd best entry killer. His best display came in the quarter-final against Moscow Five, as he was top rated in all 3 maps against the Russians and had a rating 40% above team's average (86:50 score, 1.51 rating). He was also the team's best in the semi-final against ESC Gaming (1.31 rating) and in the final against SK Gaming (1.10 rating), which made him the best rated player of the playoffs (1.33). In the end, although he was named the official MVP, in the vote on our website he suffered a close loss in the MVP race to SK's reinforcement Marcus "Delpan" Larsson, but made it into the All-Star lineup again.

mTw skipped GameGune, so their next event was e-Stars Seoul in August. This was the first occasion that they didn't end up with a podium finish, as they initially lost to SK Gaming in the Upper semi-final 8-16 on de_forge, and later to their nemesis Natus Vincere 18-22 in a very interesting Lower final.
Heldt wasn't as impressive as on the previous occasion, but he was shared best in his team with a 1.17 rating. More importantly, he was their best player in two of the team's three wins, over project_kr and mousesports.
Shortly after the return from Korea, mTw's Alexander "ave" Holdt announced his retirement and the team added Michael "Friis" Jørgensen. However, that change didn't last long as Jørgensen signed for fnatic a few weeks later, while Holdt returned to help the team qualify for IEM6 GC New York. They succeeded in that, but on the other hand they had to cancel their trip to SEC due to not having enough funds.

As they were set to travel to New York in mid-October, the team was hit with a last-minute problem as Oliver "minet" Minet couldn't attend. They called upon the services of HLTV.org's Marc "Nix0n" Winther Kristensen to help them in the group stage and after they managed to secure a spot in the playoffs, they flew in Christian "turkizh" Bindslev. Despite playing with a stand-in, they gave SK Gaming some trouble by winning the second map of the semi-final, but had to settle for 3rd place in the end after a victory over UMX.
Heldt and his teammate Danny "zonic" Sørensen were the only bright spots in mTw, as they carried them through all of the matches. He ended up with another very good 1.16 rating and was one of the event's best players once again.

The team then skipped ESWC as well, and at the beginning of November they were released from the organization.

The year didn't end for Heldt though, as he was called up by Anexis to help them out at DreamHack Winter, since their star player Nicolaj "Nuggi" Larsen was unable to attend the event in Sweden. They managed to reach the playoffs, but meeting the eventual champions fnatic meant it was the end of the road for them.
Heldt ended up as the team's best player, mainly thanks to an excellent performance in the quarter-final, especially in the first map that his team won 19-17, as he had an impressive 37:22 score (1.45 rating, 38% above average).
A one-man army
Although he missed out on several events near the end of the year, Martin "trace" Heldt was without a doubt one of the most impressive players in 2011. Even though mTw failed to win any titles, they were still quite successful and always a contender, while Heldt was among the best players at every event he attended (4x in All-Star lineups) and he always had a rating at least 10% above team's average.
The first four major events of the year were particularly successful for Heldt as he put in MVP worthy performances at each of them, as mTw achieved 2nd places at IEM5 European Finals and DreamHack Summer, and 3rd at IEM5 World Championship and Xperia PLAY. His most impressive display was at the Swedish event, where he even received the official prize as the Most Valuable Player.
He ended up with the 5th best rating of all players (1.21), while being the one who carried his team the most in regard to being rated above team average in 75% of his maps. He was also one of the most consistent players out there, with a rating above 1.00 in 72% of his maps.
In addition to that, he was top rated in 20 of his 68 maps, which is shared 2nd most of all players, and was also shared 4th best fragger with 0.80 kills per round and the 4th best in pistol-rounds.
With all those impressive statistics in mind, along with the facts that he was one of the top players in each of the 7 events he attended, and that he was a true star of his team, Heldt was certainly one of the best in the world during the whole 2011, so he was placed at the 4th position.
Lastly, it's worth noting that Heldt is currently without a team for the 2012 year and is not officially retired, but hopefully we will see him in action soon in the future.

f0rest > trace in 2011
taz no too
Just imagine if trace had team mates like f0rest/GtR/Neo/markeloff/Taz etc....
that's why it is hard to believe for so many people that he is on 4 in this list.
btw nice job traceFFFFFFFFFF, good luck in future :)

f0rest won a lot of tournaments with his team, trace didn't. Maybe he could be like f0rest if he had a team like SK. You couldn't know how he's gonna play with good players. he should get better team then we can talk about it. Obviously overrated for now.

i ask you, don't you think it's normal that trace has more kpr?
Also f0rest got tons of 1st place.
you're talking with 0.03
f0rest 96 maps.
f0rest % is above trace. f0rest 2nd most kills in 2011. he's a beast
neo top1 this year 100%

1, Neo
2, Markeloff
3, GTR
2. f0rest attended four more events than trace.
That should in my opinion overshadow a 0.4 difference, as kalle was ranked only 11th because he attended fewer events than the ones above him and that he didn't win any event, although he was the top rated, most dominant and best fragger of 2011.
f0rest played a great role in SK's success by the way. He's the best of 2011 in pistol rounds, which was maybe SK's biggest strength.
Post edited 2012-01-17 02:59:39
Very unjustified rank, without much merit to place him above either taz or f0rest.
however Forest played 96 against 68 that of trace.
Kills per round: 0.80 Trace
Kills per round: 0.77 Forest
so Trace > Forest atleast this year
if mtw played every event this year, trace would be number one for sure

he is all-rounder..
his game sense is jst above f0rest ...
and by the way trace has more ratings than f0rest xD
he`s the most complete player in the world
neo < trace with awp
neo < pistols
neo have just more experience and know how to play in any situation, neo play at top level since 2003 or so, trace just since 2009
f0rest is top 5 ;)

i hope mouz or some1 will pick him as fast as possible..
but this year he didnt deserved the 4th place and not because of him but only because his team.
If it was top talented players the list should be like this:

It would be epic if mouz add him, but its almost impossible :(
AHAHA
Trace ♥
Easy to say that when you didn't read the thread properly.
"4th most consistent (72% of maps above 1.00 rating) carried his team the most (75% of maps above team's average)" If he were ranked in front of NEO I would clearly agree with you. Taz had NEO to carry him when he was bad shape, and to help him doing the entry-fragger/madfragger job. So trace ? He did the AWP, the entry fragger and the madfragger brow... still wondering why he was ranked 4th ??? he should be 2nd if mTw attended to at least more 4 big events.... I think you are looking to the players as a TEAM performance, not the team performance due to HIM.....
on the paper imo, trace is along with players like f0rest and neo for sure, but withou playing as many tournaments tournaments as others in this ranking, i don't agree on this place.

You can't deny the fact that he earned 4 MVP nominations without even winning a tour, and he got nominated for All-Star line-up in every tournament he attended
It's about how much a player was able to shine and make a difference in tournments. His team doesn't need to have won all the tournments. If mtw had 3 more traces I can bet my ass that you wouldn't see SK winning so much tournments in 2011.

trace had more than enough maps and tournaments to give a realistic impression and in each one that he played he did great. And lastly, he was actually lowered one place due to his team's poor results.
TaZ and f0rest did have those many achievements, but so did players who will be in front of trace and who were those teams' main stars.
Nonetheless, awesome work in general :)
And for the sake of discussion, and due to you being the only person with actual sensible arguments, I'll try to reply.
I think you have a slightly wrong idea about how much team achievements had weight. Of course they did, but it's actually more about player's influence during those team achievements.
For example, karrigan's biggest and really only important influence was at ESWC and somewhat at DreamHack Winter (4th isn't really an achievement, but it's a semi-final) and Guangzhou.
If he had say 1 more really big achievement, or two smaller ones where he was team's best, he would have been on a similar level as trace in the team achievement regard.
In the same way, while starix didn't have any similar influence on his team's achievements, he still had 6 solid tournaments (more than most players) and that was the main reason for his inclusion.
TaZ and f0rest do have better team achievements, but TaZ was only their main star at SEC, and f0rest at GameGune and Xperia. Both less than trace, who was by far the team's best in 4 major top3 finishes.
And looking at it overall, trace was more consistent than both of them, didn't have any even close to bad tournaments, and he carried his team more than anyone else. These factors had a lot of influence.
As I mentioned, the players who are above trace will be there because they were even more impressive in their teams' achievements and/or in other factors.
Lastly, of course there is subjectivity in this, it's likely that someone who would use the exact same weighing factors as me would come up with a different list, and I'd actually love to see someone try :)
I would have given slightly less weight to tournaments in which players carried their teams, for a reason I discovered while playing dreamteam - it's never a good strategy to buy five players (or four or even three, depending on the stage of the tournament) from the same team.
It appears to be easier for a good player to get a high rating when in a lower team. The obvious explanation seems to be there's less competition for frags, especially on anti-ecos.
Post edited 2012-01-17 12:01:39
A better team would also get a better seed, in which case they would meet a worse opponent in the group stage - resulting in a high K/D for everyone on the team.
Post edited 2012-01-17 03:29:23
Maybe you should have included the statistics on the amount of times Trace was last alive/baited his whole team
1st - /
2nd - IEM5 European Championship Finals, DreamHack Summer
3rd - IEM5 World Championship, Xperia PLAY (shared with RG-Esports)
top4? WTF?
You guys need to know the individual archievements (trace's influencial in his team's sucess, for example) has more weight than team's archievement, so Taz and f0rest had a "help" from their teammates when they weren't doing a good job, trace otherwise was solid/consistent all the time.
Sry my English, :}}
Post edited 2012-01-17 07:02:50
The exact same could be said for f0rest.
These are just rankings, in reality f0rest and trace are pretty much identicle.
my point is, f0rest > trace, this year.
oh btw, f0rest also carried SK, though prolly not as much as trace.
deserved 4th.!!!
Pita even said in an interview that Anexis would have been much better with their real 5th over Trace because Trace is always baiting, and it's just bad for the team.....sure it boosts his stats nicely, but there's a reason the teams he play in never win anything lolol.
I think it's pretty obvious HLTV.org don't want this top 20 to be taken seriously by putting trace above f0rest anyway
And could you explain to me how can he be the world's best entry fragger if he's allways baiting his team...?

People call this ranking BS just because it doesn't satisfy their preference, deal with it.
Who am I talking to anyway, underrated player is underrated player. trace top3/top4 in 2010/2011 have less fans than Xizt top18/top13,Delpan top10/top9
but +1 trace
oh and btw:
#156:
"trace had more than enough maps and tournaments to give a realistic impression and in each one that he played he did great. And lastly, he was actually lowered one place due to his team's poor results."
he was also lowered once due to his team's results, so f0rest fanboys needs to calm down, he definitely deserved this.
If trace's position is based on stats ( and they're really amazing ) , why is kalle 11 ( best rating (1.25), best fragger (0.83 kills per round), most dominant ) , or TaZ 6 ( 3rd most dominant, 2nd best rifler,4x Allstar, outstanding performance at many playoffs and HUGE contribution and influence to their game and titles ),same as gux and so on ?
Putting trace so close to Neo,markellof and others like them is such a joke.Don't get me wrong,he definitely deserve spot somewhere at top10 but top4 position is not what he deserve now.
"trace needs a team" - 100% .

So basically trace is a one army.
("..while being the one who carried his team the most in regard to being rated above team average in 75% of his maps..)
And please read my post once again, Tgwri1s says in his post (#156), that trace would actually be placed as the top3 if it was only based on individual stats.

and 4 of them was mvp-nomination too
deserved
trace > f0rest
OMFG!!!!
2.GeT_RiGhTSHO
3.NEo[t]
2nd - Get_Right
3rd - Neo
2.GTR/markeloff
3.neo
BTW Next will be ESC.Neo. And I'm sure that all remember how amazing was markeloff every event in 2011...
2.GeT_RiGhT
1.Neo
C'mon polish fanboys. It is obviously that he will be next(3rd). And even that position will be TOO HIGH for him this year.
I have all respect to neo, but...
1.markeloff/GTR
2.GTR/markeoff
3.neo(maximum)
1.markeloff - truly AMAZING year, top1 awp, carry of the team, probably the best player for 2 last years.
2.get_right - great year, but his shape was good vs not so good teams in general imo.
3.Neo - I don't know why he is in top3, but I can't see him even in top5 to be honest. He wasn't so amazin', just fanboys carrying him all the time. But he is for sure very good oldschool player. He is 3rd Imo.
1.markeloff
2.get_right
3.neo
4.trace
Wait and see.
1.markeloff
2.GTR
3.trace/f0rest
FOR POLISH PEOPLE:

gtr , neo and marik will form top 3 fairly.
1.markeloff
2.gtr
3.neo
I'm sure. It will be too high for him really, but his team is top1-3 this year.
so 3rd will be Neo
1. Markeloff
he deserved it.
He carried his team every important match, was mvp on 3/4 events, important events, so whats up.
markeloff is TRUE CARRY. he was it all events. For sure he has Edward and starix, but he was TOP CARRY!
and what neo? first half of the year he wasn't so good. TaZ was much better.
3.NEOOO
i wanna see you cry, bitches :D

Cmon guys,if you would look to team achievements, then the top would be all SK,ESC,Na'Vi and fnatic or any other top team and it wouldn't be interesting.
trace was beast this year, tho he's team didn't succed well, he managed to be an awesome player every tournament, no matter mTw won or lost, he just destroyed other teams and he is universal player, who can be decent rifler and on other hand, one of best awp player.
GJtrace <3
I mean TRace has just been beasting all year long like last year and he deserves so much respect and consideration for this. He's just the most complete player along with markeloff.
I just can't wait to see him next year with some top scandinavian players, this guy still has so much to show.
That's funny cause we didn't see trace much this year but still when I look at statistics I couldn't think about someone else than him placing 4th. He's been awesome in every big tournaments.
