Danny "zonic" Sørensen has announced his retirement from professional gaming, following the news of mousesports shutting down the CS division earlier today.
The Dane had already last year hinted at a retirement, but went on to join mousesports in December, where he replaced Vinh "ninja" Bui. After joining the German team, Sørensen attended two events with the team, both times failing to advance from the group stage.
Sørensen revealed to us in a pre-IEM6 World Championship interview that his contract with the German organization would expire after the event and the two sides decided not to renew. With mousesports shutting down the CS division today, Sørensen has decided to retire, announcing via his Twitter account.

zonic has taken the last swing with his axe
About his retirement Sørensen told us the following:
"I don't think it came as a surprise about my retirement this time. Back in December I had the feeling that I wanted to go to one last CeBIT and experience IEM for one last time. Even though we all hate the feeling when people are talking about the death of Counter Strike, I don't think we can avoid it this time. Every time we've said that CS was dying, all the experts were wrong.
This time I think it's different since all the sponsors refuses to put more money in CS. I retire today because I don't see a bright future in CS 1.6 and because I want to put more focus onto my education. I wish all the CS players the best of luck at CPH Games, and a huge shout out to all the people who have supported me throughout the years!"
Before joining mousesports, Sørensen was a long time in the Danish team mTw, before this it was NoA, but was also for a short period playing in SK Gaming. With mTw Sørensen had a very strong showing in 2008, winning KODE5, WEM and WCG.
Sørensen is not the first from the old Danish school to retire, his former team mates in Jonas "whimp" Svendsen, Muhamed "MJE" Eid, Brian "hpx" Pøhl, Christoffer "Sunde" Sunde and Alexander "ave" Holdt have all quit playing professionally.
The last tournament showing for Sørensen was last week in Hannover, when attending the IEM6 World Championship with mousesports, finishing second to last in the group to end his career.

good, no ?
gl in real life, wish you the best!
Best Danish player ever in my opinion, he was on of the main reasons Denmark was on the map with a stable top team.
Good luck in the future.
(well after thinking zonic will join mouz, I guess it's karrigan now)

(NoA/mTw/zonic/ave)
Jokes aside, a fantastic player, was a pleasure watching him play.
U retired becouse u cant even get close to a top1 anymore with mTw, and now with mouz, both organizations that sponsored your trips.
I am huge fan of your game, but i cant agree with your statement.
anyways he was king of CS in 2008 and he was in top3 team for more than 5 years so it is quite good.
a organization like mouz, and a player like zonic, work to be top1, not just to play group stage.
and the reality is both are far from a top1 at the moment, and thats why mouz shut down and zonic is retired.
if they got top1 iem6 they would close and retire?
and finally, i said i am his huge fan, but gaming as any sport is about moment.

Is natural a game that have 10 years without any big change getting less attetion then new ones.
However, the game have 10 years without any big change and steel have more steam players then others, and steel have a strong competitive scene.
CS 1.6 is not dying at all, valve is trying to kill it. They tryied with source, now they are doing it again with GO.
They "killed" 1.5, making 1.6 free. Why valve doesnt make a evolution of 1.6, like a 1.7 version, but putting other name, to sell it like a new game.
I really think valve deserve to get some money from me to keep playing the game they created.
I am being stupid here?
Read my post again. Where do you think the money comes from? The sponsors.
I work with events for 9 years, u can be sure i know about sponsors.
However money can come DIRECTLY from the audience too, as any sport, u play to watch it.
So dont blame sponsors, they just go with the flow on what your give them a better ROI.
And yet, we still have many sponsors on CS1.6, we just had a line up going to IEM6 from Brazil 100% sponsored.
Yes money can come from us, but do you seriously think we can keep this game alive? If you organized events for 9 years, you know it is not cheap, especieally if we want it to stay as a competive game, it means we have to get the game in the big tournaments, and without sponsors this will not happen. I am not blaming sponsors, why would I blame them? They're awesome, but as zonic stated, more and more sponsors are pulling out of 1.6.
And keep in mind its not like CS will be dead tomorrow, that was not my point, but it is only gonna go down hill from now as it has been doing for quite some time now.
a lot of players retire :S :((

GL IRL Danny.
gl from denmark danny :D
Denmark really had the potential to rape everybody on earth if they'd formed their dreamteam, really sad that it's never going to happen
gl irl..
good player
I wanna see ave, zonic,Sunde,Whimp,MJE lineup AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
CS is dead.
Is not completely about the players. There is not so much good talents, the proof is that mousesports, SK, fnatic have mixed teams. Why is that? Because there is not replacements for the old ones. Yeah, there are good players, but not so good for these teams.
If that doesn't mean that CS is dead... Or at least giving its last breath.
love gg
Its too bad seeing players retiring so often.
Hope CSPromod will success if 1.6 dies.
