The World Cyber Games will shift their focus onto the mobile phone gaming platform and will discontinue with all PC games.
The news about WCG to focus on mobile phone gaming has hit the streets, but still no official announcement has been made from the South Korean organization. Although WCG announced their annual game voting a while back with CS 1.6 featured, it looks like they have changed their mind now.
A few days ago the rumor popped in various forum threads and pcgames.com.cn also brought a report on the matter. Today, cadred.org posted a leaked letter they have come in possession of. The letter has allegedly been sent out to all WCG partners, signed by WCG CEO Brad Lee.
The leaked letter reads:
"In recent years, the gaming and IT trends have been moving so fast. In the current status of gaming and IT industry, one of the most remarkable information to us was the mobile shipments have exceeded the PC shipments.
As wide spread mobile devices, mobile gamer would rapidly increase as well. In this situation, the major PC game publishers have been expanding their investment and business in the mobile game development & publishing.
This information was very cruel to us since we had been committed to the PC-Based gaming event for long time. We have witnessed that there have been many companies and organizations who went out of business because they didn't put effort to change. Therefore we concluded that we should create WCG's new identity.
Under this circumstance, we made a hard decision that we should bring the mobile, new key sector in the game industry, in our event concept. Hence, WCG decided to start the Mobile Game-Based Festival.
To create the Mobile Game-Based Festival, WCG is under the discussion with the sponsors and game publishers regarding new event structure and the countries for new festival. Therefore, there will be no longer present event module, such as Pan Championship, and PC-Based National Finals. And, the official game titles of WCG will consist of mobile games."
The official WCG titles will therefore in the future only feature mobile phone gaming at their events. Mobile phone gaming has already been featured at several of their events. In 2009 the CS final between fnatic and AGAiN was moved off main stage for the second map, in order to make room for mobile phone gaming.
Also last year we witnessed WCG go big with mobile phone gaming, handing out the biggest prize at the 2011 finals to Asphalt 6 on Samsung's Android smart phone. A total of $55,000 went to top three finishers, with the winner taking home $40,000.
With the focus switching to mobile phone gaming, we can look back and at the 11 years where WCG featured PC titles, including Valve's Counter-Strike every year.
| Year | Host city | Winner | Winnings |
| 2011 | Busan, South Korea |
ESC Gaming |
$25,000 |
| 2010 | Los Angeles, USA |
Natus Vincere |
$25,000 |
| 2009 | Chengdu, China |
AGAiN |
$35,000 |
| 2008 | Cologne, Germany |
mTw |
$50,000 |
| 2007 | Seattle, USA |
emuLate |
$55,000 |
| 2006 | Monza, Italy |
PGS |
$60,000 |
| 2005 | Singapore |
Team 3D |
$50,000 |
| 2004 | San Francisco, USA |
Team 3D |
$50,000 |
| 2003 | Seoul, South Korea |
SK Gaming |
$40,000 |
| 2002 | Daejeon, South Korea |
M19 |
$40,000 |
| 2001 | Seoul, South Korea |
LnD |
$40,000 |
Stay tuned as the World Cyber Games are still to make the official announcement of the shift to mobile phone gaming.
They don't seem to realize that although there are plenty of "mobile gamers," these people aren't actually "gamers." They are people who own cellphones and occasionally use them to play games when they are the train/bored/etc.
I don't understand what makes them think that the mobile gaming community is competitive enough, or even CARES enough, to spend time watching other people play mobile games.
In my opinion, WCG will either reverse or change this decision to include PC games, this is an elaborate troll, or WCG will die.
(This is from an American, not South Korean, point of view)

in a way, good riddance. Last years were pretty lame with only a few good teams attending, many weak ones. If only WCG had understood earlier that video games will never be recognized as a real sport then maybe they could have made good events, without this dumb rule against players from another country or all this drama in ceremonies

BUT POLAND STRONG 3 WINS!
like any others yea
It's apparent that 1.6 is on the way out as a top level esport, no matter how much people will hate to hear those words. CS:S has never been and most likely will never be a top level esport, not matter how much CS:S players will hate to hear those words.
CS:GO is basically the only option for people who love the FPS genre and although it may be very different from the other two games it still keeps the core elements of CS (skill required, simple and tactical). CoD/BF will never be created with esports in mind so you can forget about them.
As sad as it sounds, if CS:GO fails as an esport, FPS fails as an esport.
PS. Is there a notification on this site if I get a reply? I can never tell if someone's replied to my post or not :(

I don't blame them for having their own agenda at all. It's quite understandable as they're a game development company. But they will obviously not be catering for the already existing community, and the game will not be able to gather enough players to make it in any form of e-sport top circuit.
You "Community" tab should turn red when you get a notification!
I've seen first hand how open the CS:S community are to switching when it's released but that won't be enough to make it a huge competitive title, for that to happen the 1.6 community need to take a leap of faith too. Although a similar scenario to the one when CS:S was released and nobody switched, this time 1.6 won't be around for much longer so if they don't there will be no CS, for anyone.
I just really hope people give it a chance despite its obvious differences. The CPH Games should be a decent barometer as to how it will play as a competitive title, I'm pretty excited for it :D
So did CS: Condition Zero, though. And even though I loved, and still love the game, it did not enjoy much success.
I kinda fear just that. I don't thinnk CS:GO will make 1.6 players switch, even though I'm commenting on this in a very early stage. If nothing else comes up, like CSPromod or a CS2, whenever that may be, CS1.6 will become a casual game with a few small events in Eastern Europe.
With CS:GO's current situation, I don't think Copenhagen Games will be a barometer of how it will play as a competitive title. The game is not competitive at all in its current form. And I don't think people should see it as a barometer either, because it will just make it worse.
dafuq ?

they must be broke now but they want to keep doing small tournaments so they don't sell the franchise that cheaper.
Im laughing cuz the WCG was crap in 2011, they deserve bankrupcy.

Get a brain. You're a lowlife disgrace to the 1.6 community and gaming community in general.
I agree the level of tournament was at a low in 2011 but you have to remember that we have had few of the most amazing tournaments and matches in the past, thanks to WCG.
I totally agree!
1000 spectators from the world
2 x IEM
2 x ESWC
3 x WCG
No one has more and no one will. (assuming that speculations about IEM 7 not having CS 1.6 is true)
Electronic DoodleJump World Cup (EDJWC)
World DoodleJump Games (WDJG)
DoodleHack (DH)
KODEJUMP5
ArbaDoodleCup
Intel Exteme Jumpers (IEJ)
International e-Jumpers Federation (IEJF)
GunJump
hopefully other events too will remove cs 1.6 and move to mobile games and CS:GO
This is going to change PC gaming? ^ ://
Skill: high+++. I always get the map full of my fed snake.
Country: Poland, but I am ready to move Finland to play with your Nokia's.
Goal: To win WCG 2012 Snake world champship!

people playing casual games will never care about watching it on streams. At least judging by my friends. This concept seems weird to me

Compared to this, that was actually a pretty good idea!
