In our second interview ahead of DreamHack Summer 2012 we talk with Yegor "markeloff" Markelov from Natus Vincere, touching about the trip and experience playing Counter-Strike: Online in the K1 League, as well as the upcoming tournament in Jönköping.
As the only foreign team, Natus Vincere went to Shanghai to take part in the Counter-Strike: Online K1 League. Markelov takes us through the experience of K1 League, talking about the game and the fact that the Ukrainian team did not pass the group stage.
In the second part of the interview with talk with Markelov about the upcoming DreamHack Summer tournament, where Natus Vincere will be up against fnatic and Moscow Five in the group stage.
For those who have not seen, heard or read about Counter-Strike: Online, tell us about the game.
If I'm not mistaken, CS:O is a new game as close as possible like CS 1.6 but with some modifications and differences. There are a lot of new guns, game modes, online shop(in-game). All the servers are online. And the biggest problem in this game there are no rates at all… Which means you play with rate 7500 cl_cmdrate 30 and cl_updaterate 30
Can the game be compared to any other Counter-Strike titles it looks like 1.6.
Like I said before, it's really similar to CS 1.6 but with less of console commands.
The game is specifically targeted for the Asian market, while it's not really known to anyone in the Western part of the world. Do you feel you were able to transfer your skills as an individual and as a team, from 1.6 to CS: Online?Easy. There is no huge difference with CS 1.6. And if creators of CS:O will change the things that we told them it will be an awesome game.

markeloff sightseeing in Shanghai during K1 League
While you tested the game for the first time two days before your first matches in the K1 league, the Chinese teams had plenty of time to get used to the game. How did you experience this, did they know tricks that caught you off guard?
Actually they don't play CS:O either, they love CS 1.6 more. So the most of Chinese teams played new CS not more than we did.
Having seen your post on the social medias, I have to ask. How powerful is the bazooka and is it useful at all?I've never played with bazooka or any other new weapon. But I saw it… it's really imbalanced but so funny.
Are there any other weapons in the game that you don't find in 1.6?
There are a lot of new weapons like launcher, fire thrower, bazookas, new pistols, shotguns and much more. But gladly we played tournament mode without new guns.
You won 10-4 against MI5 and 18-12 against HiQi in your first matches. To the trained tournament eye, the results seem a bit weird, tell us how a match in the K1 league is played.
Everything is very simple. In the first half of the game a team should win 9 rounds (9-1, 9-6 or even 9-8) if you do so in the second half you need to gain +1 round then your opponent won 1st half. The rules were a bit weird. Roundtime was 2 mins and c4timer 45 seconds.
You ended up winning four matches and losing two. Losses against MI5 and E/Teng meant a three-way tie. The scoring system in K1 meant that the two Chinese teams advanced. What is your opinion about the system used, considering how matches can have a very different end result?
It's tournament rules and you can’t nothing to do with that, but it's a bit unfair to count round difference w/ using such a strange system. The fairest way to decide the winner is to play consolidation games.

Natus Vincere with the K1 League organizers
When you guys found out you had been eliminated, what feelings did you have towards the K1 experience?
Honestly? I was happy that we won't come back here for 14 more days to play semi-finals and finals. But on the other hand we were really sad that we lost… It's always said. And of course we really appreciated K1 staff who invited us and did everything they can to make our staying comfortable. So big thanks to them!
You've now been back in Ukraine for ten days. How have you been spending your time, considering DreamHack Summer is starting next week.
I had 3-4 days of vacation after China at Azov Sea with my friends before start practicing to DH.
The word is you guys have been playing a lot since the return, how badly do you want to win DreamHack?
Winning is everything! So we really want to win DreamHack Summer. By the way, we have never ever won Summer Cup in Jönköping.

markeloff really wants to win the summer edition of DreamHack
Looking at your group, you will face fnatic and Moscow Five, as well as a BYOC team. What sort of expectations do you have, based on previous results against fnatic and Moscow Five?
There are only top level teams at DH this year, so it will be really hard to win it. We don't have any chance to make a mistake. But still, if you want to win a tournament it really doesnt matter who you play against - fnatic, M5 or any other. We are ready to win against any of them. The only one who can stop us - is ourselves!Based on previous year's at DreamHack, the tournament this time has less teams and a smaller amount of prize money. How do you feel about the fact focus is shifted towards other games?
We are going there not for the money, only title of DH Summer 2012 matters. Every one knew that sooner or later it will happen. There're lot of new games that more popular for eSport community like Dota2, SC2, LoL and others. There has been a lot of mixed opinions about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and the possibility of it replacing 1.6 for all majors. Has the opinion about the game changed within the team, since playing it the first time?
Haven't played it yet since updates and don't want to!
While there is not a whole lot of events scheduled, GameGune will take place next month, can we expect you guys to make the trip again this year?
Of course we will attend this great tournament. First of all I really want to win it! I have never win it before - two bronzes and a 4th place... Secondly, it's one of my favorite cities in whole world. Thirdly, KOKOXILY cafe or smth like that! its japanese place there you can eat every thing you can or cant for 15 euro, its just perfect!
Markelov and Natus Vincere will play their first match at DreamHack Summer 2012 at 14:00 on Sunday, when facing off against Moscow Five.

must be the thumb up button!
Also ... isn't the source scene strong in EU? Same with COD ... hmm
Post edited 2012-06-15 13:31:35
CS:S, COD > EU
:-|
agree about that shit:GO(yeap it is not CS it is shit:go)
Haven't played it yet since updates and don't want to!
1. He was talking about CS:Online when he said " its really similar to cs 1.6 and with modifications".
2. Here you got your phrase: "Haven't played it yet since updates and don't want to!"
3. Why is it highly doubtful they would ever win something in CS:GO?
hahaha I love this guy<3
what the hell is Conan O'brien doing in that picture with navi and chinese staff :D?
NEVER PLAY CS:CRAP MY FRIENDS !!
You can't play such a old game forever, new games are coming up fast.
Also the Sponsors and Organizers don't care what few popular players are saying. They can always find new players willing to play new games, that's how the world works.
There are also players like Starix, who don't really care what they play as long as it brings in cash.

markeloff <3
P.S. Thanks for that you're still supporting CS 1.6 community. We love you dude.
CAPITAIN MARKELOFF IS HERE!!!! =DDD
<3
before hate, just give it a try. Srlsly? you will not play this game because somebody said you to don't play it?
wtf...
I dont said that it is 10/10. But alternatives? Only 1.6. New good fps ? Nope... there is nothing (Call of duty <- rofl). I'm waiting for shootmania but... it is different a lot.
It not that bad to, I think its ok to play it for a while and have fun.
but there was a loooot of updates and now its much better.
"Haven't played it yet since updates and don't want to!"
So, he just don't know what he is talking about. Try, than you can give a opinion.
CS 1.6 LIIIIIVE ! =D
WE DON'T PLAY CS GO!
Cmon don't let 1cs 1.6 die :)
Post edited 2012-06-15 14:13:41
did the writer mean It's always sad.
??
I didn't count CS:S. You won't take cs:go for 1.5k viewers :D
If CSGO will be more popular there will be tournaments with CSGO. Competitive community is a small % of whole community...
for eg. LoL vs Dota. LoL is fkin shitty game, dota more competitive, so what?...
deal with it... unfortunately.
btw. on WCG now ill be only mobile games? esport have bad condition imo.
Also fRoD had this to say:
"If CS wants to succeed and stay alive, everyone who plays cs (from 1.6, to source, to even the people who play cz or other beta versions) needs to come together in any new update and support that for the sake of the CS community, regardless of the version you prefer."
Post edited 2012-06-15 18:09:27
Also they'renot saying it's a good game. They're saying their positive hopes.
Valve :
"That's what Counter-Strike is: a game of skill. And this is what CS:GO is: an effort to put anyone who has or should play Counter-Strike into the same game. That's a big enough goal but not a grand enough one to merit the name Counter-Strike 2."
This'snot an update for CS. It's completely new game. Even nobody should compare go with 1.6
Post edited 2012-06-15 18:26:08
By update he means new CS game ^_o
Post edited 2012-06-15 19:02:01
if f0rest quit cs i become ur fan in 0.00 seconds
The words of the king... So smart.
and thanks markeloff you are the king <333

But for me it will be quite interesting if old pro players will start playng CSGO. How they will handle it... if they will still on top? or some new players will be better ;)
CS:GO could be the life saver of the Counter Strike legacy, or CS might disappear from major competitions forever. It is up to you.
"That's what Counter-Strike is: a game of skill. And this is what CS:GO is: an effort to put anyone who has or should play Counter-Strike into the same game. That's a big enough goal but not a grand enough one to merit the name Counter-Strike 2."
I just imagine: CSGO goes live and in same time they deactivates 1.6. on steam.
If this wil lbe possible it will be the biggest whine on internet ;d PPL will kill coz of it ;d
The fact of the matter is that 1.6 is dying, if you really think that CS 1.6 will grow bigger then you are blind. It is time to wake up people. The only chance CS has is that a new version will gather most of the players(+ get new players) and make for such a huge community that tournaments, sponsors Etc will support it.
As I see it this could potentially happen in CS:GO, 1.6 is dying wether you like it or not, the question is if you want the CS legacy to continue or not. If some people stay with 1.6 and CSS we will just have 3 smaller communities, as opposed to one strong which equals more support, more tournaments and more prize money.
I'm gonna play CS 1.6 till the first out-of-beta-version of CSPromod gets released.
DOTA2 concept:
CS:GO turnament for 1 000 000 $ and NaVi will play CS:GO. Fnatic, Sk gaming and many others as well
That cafe sounds sick! :O N1.
For DH Summer all I can say is if karrigan will start bitching there then ZeroGravity will go for him :) FUCK YEAH GO NA`VI !
what are you talking about? o_o
GG markeloff.
CS1.6 > CS:O > CS:GO
Of course they had to call some CSS pros too, because it is suposed to be a mixture between these 2 games. If they do what the pros tell them to, I think it has the chance to be a NEW Great GAME!
LET'S MAKE VALVE LISTEN THE 1.6 PROS, THE REAL CS EXPERTS!
Post edited 2012-06-15 16:10:31
valve tried talking to 1.6 pros, all they wanted was 1.6 with nicer graphics...
not gonna work, you need to understand it's a new game, both CSS and 1.6 pros need not be ignorant and simple minded.
CS 1.6 FOREVER!!!
I could not have written this better myself. Also:
SK wants to win Dreamhack Summer and South Africa is in Africa
Post edited 2012-06-15 17:16:06
so i guess this is where CS really dies
wcg and iem are NOT to blame , and neither is CS:go , CS:o or source
the people to blame are the 13 year old "gamers" who only know xbox, CoD and LoL , they ruined esports.
When the game has changed completely since it came out.. interesting comment when he doesn't want to even touch it since they've improved the game.. sounds like when 1.5 game out noone wanted to play it or 1.6, then after a few 1.6 patches everyone loved it.. irony at its finest
CS:GO WRONG
CSS is a shitty broken game, and thats why it failed to replace 1.6, and CS:GO is going in the same direction.
"If CS wants to succeed and stay alive, everyone who plays cs (from 1.6, to source, to even the people who play cz or other beta versions) needs to come together in any new update and support that for the sake of the CS community, regardless of the version you prefer." <- Danny "fRoD" Montaner
I dont give a flying fuk about the future of "countertrike" and what pros have to say about it. As long as there are people in pubs, CWs, i will play 1.6.
he said cs:O not cs:GO
totally n00000000000000000000000000000b
1.6 just kills every stupid broken bad shitty version of itself. Only a better version can survive, so far 1.6 is the best competitive CS version.
ggglhf Na`Vi at DH summer u should take it!!!
Dont Play CS : GO !!!!
Counter-strike 1.6 FOREVER <3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
markeloff you are the best <3
A changing of the CS 1.6 CS: GO not to talk. This is a classic of the latter only edited CS: Source. Have nothing to do with the link.
All in all a very bad decision IEM's.
fuck off 1.6 and die already... valve shut down the engine/servers please.
also, bet he plays with a mcdonalds trio next to his computer. Poor american...
Post edited 2012-06-15 20:23:56
+1 1.6 one love
I tried CSPromod BETA 1.08 based on hl2 engine its very good replace for cs 1.6
Why they didnt do a change like 1.5 to 1.6 was it ?
1.6 ---> 1.7 holding the esence of the game
CS GO SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Counter-Strike: Online is a totally different game than Counter-Strike: GO. CSO is a game that is exactly like 1.6 but targeted for Asian gamers, with fewer commands and options. CS:GO is the next CS game to come out.
The way this interview is set up, it makes it see as though K1 League used CS:GO. This is entirely false. During the interview, a lot of references are made to CS:O, the game that K1 League used. THE LEAGUE DID NOT USE CS:GO. I had to reread this article a few times because it was confusing for a native English speaker as myself. How confusing would it be for all of the international fans on this site? I mean, the title of the article even says: markeloff: Don't want to play CS:GO. WHY IS THIS THE TITLE? THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE WITH CS:O IN K1 LEAGUE. 1 QUESTION ABOUT CS:GO. This isn't journalism, this is the 1.6 community trying to make sure another Valve project doesn't succeed.
The only question in the whole interview that deals with CS:Go is the following:
There has been a lot of mixed opinions about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and the possibility of it replacing 1.6 for all majors. Has the opinion about the game changed within the team, since playing it the first time?
Haven't played it yet since updates and don't want to!
Everyone in these comments seems to think that markleoff is talking about how awful CS:Go is rather than CS:Online. It seems as this whole news story was conjured up to give CS:Go a bad image. Please fix this disparity. Nixon, as you can see the thick-headed 1.6 community is already attacking CS:Go and this article has nothing to do with the game.
Finally, who the hell cares what markleoff thinks about CS:Go? What is his expertise anyway? He became good @ cs after everyone stopped playing the game and wants to disown other games when he hasn't even played them enough. CS will die because of the hate in the 1.6 community. Mark my words.
Post edited 2012-06-15 23:56:21
No organizers will dare to put CS:GO in their game list after those interviews. You can't see any positive words from PROS. Also most of this community didn't like game either.
I didn't count CS:S. You won't take cs:go for 1.5k viewers :D
Obviously this individual is confused.
Post edited 2012-06-16 00:00:17
We all know that CS is being removed from all the international tourneys. And all the counterstrikers are talking about the next CS from Valve which is CS:GO.
And if worlds top 10 CS player says that the new upcoming game doesnt interest him and he wont be playing it. Which indirectly means, maybe a possible retirement, yes it deserves to be a thread title. Because his experience in Asia and what he thinks about the upcoming tourney isnt much important as compared to him retiring from the scene.

and me -.-
CS:GO holy shit! :@
He talked about CS:ONLINE which is a completely different thing.
CS:GO - FO :P
Do you really expect a new CS game to be based on the same engine as the original game that was made over 12 years ago? Sure it could, but that would not attract new players, sponsors and so on..
Sorry but you can NOT argue with thousands of people who like this game as it is now and neither can valve. Sooner or later you both will get it.
I am a hardcore 1.6 fan, dont get me wrong - I love CS 1.6 and if it were to me I would put all my money in this game, but the thing is that it is not up to me. Dont blame valve and CS:GO for 1.6 to going down, the game was falling (in terms of clans, leagues, tournaments and total prize money overall) way before we heard about CS:GO. The game is getting old(more than 12years now), the major tournaments are dropping out and so are the sponsors.
It is time to face the facts: 2012 will most likely be the last year with major tournaments in CS 1.6. I want the counter strike legacy to continue, and the only option for that atm is to support CS:GO(Which is not a bad game, eventhough I prefer 1.6 I have realized that the time is in for a new CS game) - hopefully it can be the new major FPS title that is picked up by the major tournaments and receive tons of support.
"If CS wants to succeed and stay alive, everyone who plays cs (from 1.6, to source, to even the people who play cz or other beta versions) needs to come together in any new update and support that for the sake of the CS community, regardless of the version you prefer." - Danny "fRoD" Montaner..
Ofcourse he wants to move to CS:GO cuz he sucks in 1.6.
And why the f**k should any of us care about tourneys and all? I dont follow COD tourneys cuz i dont like that game. Similarily, i wont follow CS:GO, cuz i dont like that game. Just because the name is counterstrike, doesnt make it counterstrike to me cuz i dont find CS elements in tht game yet.

Oh and one more thing. You said this is a community of cs 1.6ers and it is just a couple of hundreds of them. On the one hand this is the most popular cs 1.6 site of the world. So most of the users comment here or do not because the rest of us did. On the other hand this is irrelevant because we have read the opinions about CS:GO all of the pro players and 90% of them said this is a shit (in a more decent way). If the pros do not continue palying then the whole huge community won't either this is soooo OBVIOUS. Let me remind you of the title of this news one last time "markeloff: Don't want to play CS:GO". The pros the REAL PROS NAVI ESC GAMING WINFAKT SK GAMING(only forest and get right plays CS:GO SOMETIMES) ESRAEL and so on WILL NOT PLAY CS:GO more likely play LoL(Neo said). And this is the whole point.
But on the other hand we were really sad that we lost… It's always sad *
well said marke!
fuck ESL & CS:GO epic fail
"CS 1.6 FOREVAAHH vs CS:GO TEH FUTURE!"
this is so fun.
Well done imbeciles.
