Blog: Miami Heat Acquire Stake in Misfits

January 10th, 2017 18:00
The NBA team Miami Heat announced on Tuesday that they have acquired a partial stake in Misfits. Their agreement "calls for marketing, branding, merchandising and promotional partnership between the NBA team and e-sports organization". Misfits do not compete in Counter-Strike, but they do have players in League of Legends, Overwatch, and Super Smash Brothers, among others, and were originally formed out of the Renegades organization.

NBA team Miami Heat are the latest to catch wind of the e-sports boom

The Heat are the latest professional sports team to invest financially in an e-sports organization. Their announcement comes on the heels of Copenhagen F.C's acquisition of the ex-dignitas CS:GO roster. Last September, the Philadelphia 76ers became the first American professional sports team to own an e-sports organization when they bought dignitas and Apex. Retired NBA stars Rick Fox and Shaquille O'Neal are also owners of Echo Fox and NRG, respectfully. With global e-sports revenue in 2016 estimated at around 493 million USD and growing every year, expect the number of sports organizations and entities invested in the scene to multiply in 2017.
