Blog: Tournament Rankings 2008

Hi guys !

I'm back with the year 2008. Enjoy.

Intro : On the choice of tournaments : I only picked "top" international tournaments. Some medium level tournaments are missing, and I added some pretty weak tournament just for the sake of tradition, like the first GameGune in 2003.

I put the top8 for major tournaments like ESWC, WCG, CPL Summer/Winter and top6 for IEM as the format is weird. Otherwise, it's the top4. It's ordered from the most recent to the oldest tournament of the year.

I'll release one year every 1-2 weeks.

Facts & thoughts.

- The mortal Team work year. After 2007 where the Danes spent their time losing in final, mTw learned to win with whimp. KODE5, ESWC Masters, WEG Masters, WCG and Rekrut.ru. In my opinion, the best CT team ever. These guys were unbeatable that year when they played their A-game.

- Great year as well for eSTRO. The new recruit ari was a genius rifler and the Koreans collected good rankings : 2nd at IEM 2 and ESWC, 3rd at WEG Masters and WCG. By the way, if you just look at major tournaments, eSTRO was the team of the year.

- 2008 was the end of CGS. zet came back to 1.6 with SK, and they immediately won their first tournament (IEM GC Los Angeles). But sadly, zet never really found back his level of 2006 and was kicked months later.

- Best year for mousesports. First at IEM 2 and IEM GC Dubaï, multiple good rankings, the mouses were elephants that year. The two new guys played a big part : gob b was considered a world class leader and cyx was somewhere between Neo, zonic and f0rest.

- The cinderella story of 2008 was Team Norway at WCG. elemeNt, retired for a year, came back to play with a big mix. With an easy bracket, the Norwegians ended 4th and were close to beat mTw in the semis as they lead 1-0. Last flash for Norway, as the CS scene is now quite dead.

- 2008 was the year when markeloff made a first splash on the international scene. His team HellRaisers was known in the Eastern countries but everyone noticed his incredible aim at the KODE5 finals.

- 2008 was clearly the follow-up of 2007. NoA became mTw.dk, PGS was called MYM, Finns played for Roccat while fnatic, SK, mouz and MiBR are still here. The only "new" guys at the top were eSTRO's players. And the Ukrainian scene continued to grow up : 3rd place at GameGune for A-Gaming and 3 Ukrainians played for Virtus.pro.

Why Virtus.pro have Ukraine flag?I always thought that it is Russian organization?
2012-03-02 14:45
Kane, Zeus and Edward are Ukrainians. In my rankings, I choose the team flag considering the nationality of the players and not the organization.

Gamegune 08 was our the last trophy... I remember that before the tournament everyone was like "mouz will face mibr in the finals and will beat them, since they dont have cogu or fnx, no chances for them" then in the first map of the final mibr got raped... in the second map (train) they were being raped as well, but thanks to ton, they made an incredible comeback and won the tournament over the team that would be the IEM champion of the year... ton was/is so underrated

mTw 2008 was the best team in cs 1.6. history. at least in my opinion. There has never been a comparable teamplay.
2012-03-06 21:07
SK from 2002-2005 was the best team in history...won the most medals and most money how can u say mTw was better than HeatoN/Potti/fisker/elemeNt/SpawN
2012-03-08 04:54
I am not judging the achievements, I am judging the teamplay and mtw 2008 played counter-strike in perfection.
