The Viennese butchers would make horses which had to be put down but otherwise healthy (from a broken leg) into sausage. My Oma was from Vienna and her father was a butcher. Family stories. Indeed it is delicious.

It's normal to eat horse meat in Switzerland. Horse steak are great, but by far the best thing are spicy horse sausages. They are delicious. When a horse breaks its legs, it usually needs to be killed because you can't fix that. Why waste all that tasty meat? Never understood why it's considered abnormal in some European countries to eat horses.
2016-12-15 14:58
cause its considered a majestic and loyal creature, just like a domestic dog you dont eat dog meat right? its the same thinking

u know basically no one eats dog in countries like China and Korea right? It's sometimes eaten by like 1% of the population who are poor as fuck, yet the stereotype is that all Asians eat dog

Netherlands vBr8
Why so serious my friend? We all know it's not that common. Atleast I hope most people do.
2016-12-16 09:40
Dogs have a completely different relation to humans than horses. Horses aren't even really smart, in fact pigs outsmart horses. "majestic creatures" So are bulls, yet we kill them to get beef (cattle, teenager bulls) or even veal (baby bulls). There are basically no horse farms where horses are just raised to get slaughtered. But many farms have horses, for fun. And if one has to be killed or just dies, why not eat it? You could also eat dogs theoretically. But I heard it doesn't taste good and people usually have a very close relation to their dogs. In some regions here it was also normal that farmers eat cats. Especially in Italy. Today it's very rare and only done secretly. People were poor, so they had to eat whatever they had. If there was too many stray cats, becoming a real plague, and you had to kill some of them, why not eat them if you're poor and hungry?
2016-12-15 15:09
Can confirm that dogs don't taste anything great, especially taking into account that one has to cook them properly in order to get rid of the notorious smell(not sure on this part though, but I did eat a dog that had a... well... dog smell). I think eating dogs stems from the times when people were on shortage with other meat, not from dogs being great meal. Nowadays it's more of following ancestors tradition.

"Horses aren't even really smart" “Many scientists believe there is a correlation between brain weight and intelligence. The adult human brain weighs approximately three pounds. A cat’s brain weighs about a third of a pound. Dog brains weigh about three-fourths of a pound. The brain of the horse is the size of a human child’s and weighs from one and a half pounds to two pounds. Oddly enough, although smaller, the horse’s brain is similar to our own with a few differences. The most important difference is that much of the human brain is used for fine-motor skills and language development, while most of the horse’s brain is used for analyzing information received from the environment. Some scientists have said that horses have the intelligence of twelve-year old humans. At the turn of the twentieth-century, the American horse Beautiful Jim Key could perform basic arithmetic, read, write, and spell. A few years later the famous German horse Clever Hans demonstrated his expertise at reading unconscious human behavior. Almost monthly, new studies are published confirming the complexity of equine intelligence. Besides over-all brain size there are other interesting differences between equine and human brains. The roundish protuberances at the base of all mammalian brains, the cerebellum, is much larger in the horse-brain than the human brain. This is the part of the brain where the integration of sensory perception, coordination and motor control takes place. Horses, as prey animals, must be able to run within an hour after they are born. Coordinating the movement of four legs while sorting out information received from the environment is necessary for the horses’ survival as a species. All gross motor movements are quickly and permanently stored in the large cerebellum. Therefore, once a movement is taught to a horse it won’t be forgotten. Additionally, while humans rely in large part upon their sight and hearing to understand and participate in the world around them, horses rely on their sense of smell. The equine sense of smell is thousands of times more sensitive than the human counterpart. The smell of a rose or a good meal compliments the human world of sights and sounds. However, with their two different olfactory organs the world they perceive through their noses is one that we can only imagine. The differences in the two types of brain mean that people are experts at oral and written language development and using their hands for creating and using tools. On the other hand, horses are experts at reading and understanding the environment and body language and learning large movements. In fact, they learn many times faster than humans and preserve what they learned for the rest of their lives, while humans only retain information for a short time unless the information is regularly reviewed. If horse handlers keep the differences in the horse and human brain in mind they can make better use of the horse’s potential.” anyway if u think its ok to eat it do it, its your opinion

2016-12-15 15:48
Also they fart a lot. I once had to replace some fences on a horse meadow and these freaking horses were farting very loud every like 3 minutes. All the time, fart, fart, fart, fart, fart,...
2016-12-15 17:24
You eat its dong?
2016-12-15 15:12
Nope. But horses have a lot of good muscles. Very tasty. However if the horse is too old, the meat becomes very chewy. Generally speaking you shouldn't grill horse steaks for too long, it still needs to be a bit bloody. Horse sausages contain all kind of horse parts. You cook them in hot water and they are DELICIOUS.

The Botai culture is an archaeological culture (c. 3700–3100 BC) of ancient Kazakhstan The occupations of the Botai people were connected to their horses. Some researchers state that horses were domesticated locally by the Botai.[3] It was once thought that most of the horses in evidence were probably the wild species, Equus ferus, hunted with bows, arrows and harpoons. However, evidence reported in 2009 for pottery containing mare's milk and of horse bones with telltale signs of being bred after domestication have demonstrated a much stronger case for the Botai culture as a major user of domestic horses by about 3,500 BC, close to 1,000 years earlier than the previous scientific consensus. This does not necessarily mean they were the first to domesticate horses, but makes them the earliest known candidate

Eat? or ate?
2016-12-15 15:39
not rly abnormal here, but not too common mainly because beef is superior in taste and texture, if the meat is old you pretty much have to process it and make it into sausages or smth otherwise its too tough...
