So, there's something that has confused me for a while now. We always hear how the Turkish army is the protector of secularism in Turkey, and how they always have some kind of coup every 10/20 years for whatever stupid reason. Now there's a real reason for a coup and they failed for the first time ever? How? Why? What? Wtf happend?
2017-06-01 18:55
20 replies
the previous times the whole army was involved in the coup. This time only a smallish fraction within the army tried the coup, so they didn't have the whole army at their disposal

Okay, so it wasn't even THE army trying to overthrow Erdogan, just a bunch of privates? So I will adjust my question: Considering the history of the Turkish army and how they are very loyal to the Kemalist ideology, why aren't they committing to a full-blown coup?

They cant commit to it because they dont have enough power to do it. Command stage of the army right now belongs to the Erdogan. Chief of staff Hulusi Akar is a puppet, so are other high ranked commanders such has Air force commander, Land force commander, navy commander. Only they have enough power to do it, but im sure they wont. Im sure there are a lot of Kemalist soldiers in the army who wants to take down the current government. They cant do it because they dont have enough power. But if it was 20,30 years ago, they would've done it already. As i said in #136, army is stronger in point of technology etc. but they cant do anything in the country without the permission of government. youtube.com/watch?v=4GT8O8mHf40 Let me give you this example, Kurds are booing Turkish soldiers, if that would've happened 20 years ago, they couldnt do that because they were afraid of the army. But now its not like that. They can do it easily and unfortunately army cant do anything because of the goverment. Another expample is the coup in 1960 was made by only "40 soldiers"
2017-06-01 19:24
4 replies
So basically, the way to shut the army down was as simple as firing the old Kemalist generals and place pro-Erdogan puppets instead? If it's THAT easy, how come no one else did it before Erdogan? I think it's really weird. I always saw the Turkish army as this big brother who is a little crazy in the head and will do anything to please his grandfather (Ataturk), even if that means killing civilians (anarchists, leftists, rightists). And now they just can't do shit because the generals are pro-Erdogan? Really weird shit.

Exactly. They actually fired the Kemalist generals by saying that "they will do coup against us" in Ergenekon case (you can do some research about that) and replaced them with their generals and the generals who support FETO. And these generals that the replaced, tried to take Erdogan down. And the army that you are talking about no longer exists
2017-06-01 19:31
2 replies
That's so fucking FeelsBadMan :/ So this Ergenekon, was it real? Or some kind of false flag done by Erdogan? And if the Kemalist army is dead now, do you think Kemalism will die with them? Like, will Ataturk's photo disappear in the not so far future because of this?

It was done by Erdogan against Kemalist generals. Erdgan didnt want them to make a coup against him. And some of these generals were taken out from prisons. I forgot to say they didnt just fire them, also arrested them as well
2017-06-01 19:40
the actual reason why they failed was the people who went to the streets and lied in front of tanks and the guns. If there was noone to stand against army the coup would have been successful.

Okey so, when these coups happened in Turkey (in 1960 and 1980) army wasnt stronger than it is right now, but they had more power in the country, it was oppressive. For example in these years, u cant see pkk supporters in the streets screaming like "free kurdistan" and stuff like that, but now they can do it because of the current government, and army cant do shit without the permission of government(erdogan). So in these years if the government prevents the army, then army just shuts it down. But since AKP is in the charge a lot of things changed. And the coup was made by FETO (it is a religious communty that infiltrated to the government and to the army with the help of Erdogan, Fetullah Gulen is the leader of that group, he was so close with erdogan) So the coup didnt happen with the help of the full army, Just few generals and officers in the army. Thats the main reason why it wasnt succesfull. There a lot more things to talk about, but i hope this is enough for you, If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

In case u cant see this particular coup happened at a rush hour so to speak and erdogan knew it was gonna happen so he fled his hotel. Seems to me that it was likely a setup in order for him to put anyone he didnt like in jail. Jails are full so he needs to dispose them , so he goes for a referendum which will allow him to bring back death sentence. TL;DR it was setup!

2017-06-01 18:46

Actually my whole father side is agnostic. I myself was never raised with religious motifs or teachings nor with any kind of atheism. When I was a kid I read a lot of books and watched documentaries about atheism then read both the quran(very painful) and the bible. I also read Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, it's a wonderful book you should try it. I believe I was around 11 or 12 when I just randomly told my mother I decided that I was an atheist. She was kinda surprised but was like ok that's nice whatever. You should keep in mind that my family is definitely an exception compared to an average Turkish family. Most people who identify as non-religious never tell their parents or friends out of fear.

Great to hear that your family was so accepting (as they should). And trust me, even here we have A LOT of religious fanatics. So where do you and your family live? And does the 'outside world' know about you and/or your family?

We live in Istanbul at Besiktas. Maybe you know their football team lol. Besiktas is basically the most liberal part of Istanbul. It's one of the few places where Erdogan's votes never surpass 25% so it's really nice. I guess you mean friends and colleagues and stuff by the "outside world". I'm studying at an American High School, considered the best school in Turkey (not bragging but it is what it is lol). We have a lot of foreign teachers especially from the US, Canada and UK. We discuss a LOT of religion in school with friends. I'd say roughly half of the school are atheists. We sometimes mock islam and other religious stuff to the degree that it's just pure disrespectful. I'd like to point out that my school is a safe bubble. IF You mock Islam on the street, If you're in the wrong neighborhood---you're dead. Me and my family, we never talk religion with taxi drivers sales people etc. It's just too risky and too easy to get in a fight.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. Sounds like you're living the good life, as far as that's possible in Turkey I suppose. Good for you! So are your parents wealthy/upper class that they could live in such a modern place and send you to such a good school? And thanks for answering questions kanka.
2017-06-01 19:22

No problem it's really fun to chat with you! I wouldn't say wealthy in a rich way -far from that- but we are definitely priviliged compared to an average Turkish family, especially since my school is a bit more than 15.000 dollars per year. That's more than 3 minimum waged workers' annual salary in Turkey. Most of the money comes from my mother's career as a PR Director at a huge company. So yeah. A pretty decent life for a Turkish citizen, probably just around average for EU. Hopefully I will study in Canada with a small amount of scholarship. I would definitely classify my family as wealthy if they were earning this much 5 years ago. 5 years ago 1.5 Turkish Lira equaled 1 Dollar. Since then our economy has become so shitty it's now 3.6 Lira =1 Dollar. It's just sad. Thanks Erdogan!

Its because football is taken so serious in Turkey. And most of them are hooligans. You can see peope die in matches because of heart attack and kill each other just because someone said something bad about their team. Its so fucking stupid
2017-06-01 18:04
That's because Turkish people are born and raised with the propaganda that we are the greatest nation AND the greatest race. Most of the turks who go to football matches really believe this bs and are from ignorant and uneducated parts of Turkey. Especially the national games are played at Konya which has over 75% Erdogan supporters. Throwing coins into the pitch is just stupid hooliganism but I feel really ashamed and hate my country everytime the whole stadium boos a country's anthem. It's just braindead.

1.) Do you plan on trying to wait out erdogan, hoping he gets overthrown, or try to emigrate somewhere else? 2.) Who's the best Turkish player who's not on SS, any teams I should have on my radar? I only really occasionally watch space soldiers.

1- Im not kind of a guy that runs away from troubles. I really wanted be a soldier in my country 1 year ago, but since then a lot of things happened and i have some doubts about that right now. I thought army was the only place that Erdogan couldn't reach, but he managed to do that as well so im not really sure what im going to do. I will try to do everything i can to make my country good, but i dont think there is much i can do. 2- Many people would say Woxic, but after i saw these aimlock videos, i think he is cheating. You can watch mini, who is a great aimer in my opinion. But Space Soldiers is the only team that is competitating against European teams so i dont think you can watch a lot of Turkish players in international scene.
2017-06-01 18:38
Everyone who has the money or the qualifications to escape Turkey--escapes Turkey. It is just undeniable that Erdogan won't be overthrown at least in the near future.

Some people do, some people dont. Mostly erdogan supporters (conservatives) love them because we are muslim brothers. Nationalist people dont like them because they stabbed Ottoman Empire from behind in WW1. So its kinda 40(loves)/60(hates). I personally dont like them

Turkish people dont really know much about Albanians. Ottoman Empire had issues with everyone when it was about to fall. Every country tried to get their independence. But Arabs' betrayal affected us more because we were closer with them and since Turks became Muslims we affected from their culture so. I dont really know if Turkish people hate Albanians or not

you mean skanderbeg right? i think most people don't even know him, iirc he lived in 15th century. people usually like albania because there are a lot of muslims there
2017-06-01 19:09
You're making a distinction between Islamist and nationalists, making it sound like they are each others' opposites, but last I heard even the Grey Wolves and MHP are extremely religious people who support erDOGan. What's up with that?

No im not making a distinction. There are many people who are nationalist and conservatives at the same time and both ideas suit with MHP. But recently MHP is more like conservative, they voted yes with erdogan in referendum, but there are also some people in MHP who voted no in referendum. There are a lot of ideas in Turkey and they are really complicated. I hope you understood what i said. If you didnt, you can ask more questions, i'll try to expalin more

I understood you perfectly, you explained it well don't worry :) I always thought there is the Islamic AKP side, the Kemalistic CHP side and the ultra-nationalistic "we fuck all your mothers" MHP side. But I guess the situation is a lot more complicated than I thought.

You got the gist of it. There's also the Leftists and the Kurdish side which is like 12 to 15% of the country combined. The MHP side is like a mixture of CHP and AKP, they are Turkish nationalists who are OK with Kemalism but are culturally muslim at the same time (not hardcore muslims tho, most don't practice religion and drink alcohol daily, they just like being muslim). MHP actually split from CHP in the 1950s. The hardcore conservative movement (AKP) emerged after the 1980s in imam schools (after Kenan Evren made them legal) and later turned political in the 1990s. Non-nationalist religious people were not politicized before that and usually supported MHP or liberal parties
2017-06-01 20:22
Do you think that everyone who insults a dictatorial, patriarchal and extremely backward, not to forget religious (in 21st century!) country like Turkey is a Nazi, because you know she/he is right?
2017-06-01 18:39
^Stupid comments will be ignored^ calls people nazi and talking about people iq LEUL also you totally misrepresent Turkey. Most of the comments you wrote here are your own thoughts on the asked questions above. GL
