The two, in my opinion, best hip-hop albums this year: MIKE - May God Bless Your Hustle (2017) Red Burns - Standing on the Corner (2017)
2017-11-15 06:19
Couldn't find the song on its own anywhere, so here's a time-coded link (open the link in a new tab or navigate to 24m:17s): MIKE - Blue Bricks: youtu.be/Wt76_xe6CU8?t=1457 Edit: You can't really view any of the songs on Standing on the Corner in isolation of each other -- more so than on any other album, I mean. I rarely listen to songs outside the wider context of the album, myself, but I think Blue Bricks is indicative of the kind of self-deprecating honesty that is in short supply in hip-hop, for various valid socio-cultural/economic reasons. Mike is such a young artist, and to bring this level of lyrical maturity to his work is very impressive to me: "Boy it's been hard to admit it [...] I've had to talk to myself I need to pick up my worth [...] I'm in school for 9 hours Just pretending to learn [...] These ain't tears in my eyes Just this dirt in the wind"
2017-11-15 06:35
never heard of either of those guys are before but from listening to what you linked i think you will enjoy these especially #3 let me know youtube.com/watch?v=9dN3aS2Rxfs youtube.com/watch?v=kphKtIKYH-o youtube.com/watch?v=NBCz9XE57LY

Just edited my post quite significantly. Sorry about that, but you might appreciate this short explanation as to why I really appreciate these works. I'll check those three out in a few minutes.
2017-11-15 06:35
yeah i get what you mean listen to this youtube.com/watch?v=L5P4gfH4x4s he says a lot of deep shit not even shit i can relate to or something like that idk they are just bars that hit deep "When I'm alone in my room sometimes I stare at the wall And in the back of my mind I hear my conscious call Confidence lost, [?] blowing just like an exhaust Was a young bull with the strength nigga, no weakness at all Well that's a lie, 'cause in my mind I had to deal with my flaws Zero degrees up in my heart, me and my feelings divorced" i think thats a fucking insane bar especially the way its delivered skip to 1:30 for the bar im talking about but honestly the entire song is worth listening to Lmk if you are into the shit i linked i got hundreds of other songs like it
2017-11-15 06:43
Yeah, in hip-hop especially, there is an unspoken requirement of its artists: they're not allowed to feel, certainly not cry. That's why I especially liked that last ironic line from Blue Bricks: "These ain't tears in my eyes Just the dirt in the wind" Off the top of my head, another thoroughly introspective album was Earl Sweatshirt's I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside (2015). Loved that album title, too!
2017-11-15 06:47
thats why i love when rappers open up about themselves and talk about real shit that they deal with and their insecurities it makes the song %1000 times more personal
2017-11-15 06:49
You and me, both, brother.
2017-11-15 06:49
love shit like this so much soul and has a certain feel to it its like Nas's work just its kinda dirty and grimy but smooth and beautiful at the same time
