HLTV writer/interviewer, AMA
 |
Croatia Professeur
Hi I'm at the airport in Haikou, waiting to return home from WESG with a bunch of time to kill. AMA and I'll answer as much as I can/the most interesting questions. General info: 27 years old, living in Croatia, near Split, working for HLTV since August 2016, fulltime since October of the same year. Gonna post a link on Twitter and start answering in an hour or so, when I get through security.

if you are the real professeur then I'm sorry for reporting question:-do you think we should get some new content in cs go so that ppl don't get bored of cs go and run to other games? sorry for bad englando
2018-03-20 09:18
Definitely, adding stuff such as operations, new game modes or maps can surely help the more casual players stay interested in the game. Also, a redo of the matchmaking system would add some freshness. And before all, bringing back voice chat between teams in MM warmup/halftime/end. That was fun as hell.

What do you think MM needs? Something like voted OT after a tie (ex: 15-15 a vote comes up "play for OT?" And it has to be 6 vote yes). Or maybe 128 tick? Idk
2018-03-20 11:18
128 tick is probably step 0, I don't think the old excuse that people don't have good PC's stands any longer - since maps such as Nuke, Inferno and Dust2 are a lot more demanding performance wise than playing on 128 tick could be.

Oh hello Professeur ! How did you manage to get hired by HLTV ?
2018-03-20 09:17
I'm not sure how to answer this without telling my whole life story, but I'll try. -played games my whole life and was a forum dweller -‎started with csgo and mm in 2013, found out about the esport side a bit later -‎mid 2014 i start volunteering for a local CS site, writing news, doing videos, organizing cups -‎mid 2015 we do an online league + LAN -‎I start working for other sites, notably gamer.hr and efrag.net -‎mid 2016 I finish my masters (was in school the whole time) need to find a job -‎wanted to work in esports but didnt really know where, applied to a bunch of jobs both esports and in my line of work (computer engineering) -‎during that process, an hltv job posting popped up, I sent in my CV probably 20 mins later and eventually got a trial -‎worked hard and they took me in for full time after two months That's obviously a short version, there are a lot of details that could've ended up differently and who knows where I would be now, maybe better off and maybe not. If you have any additional specific questions - shoot.

For how much time have you been around esports and what did it take for them to hire you?
2018-03-20 09:19
I didn't know that esports really existed before the second half of 2013, I knew competitive gaming existed but not on such a large scale. From there on I got pretty invested in some smaller, volunteer projects and, with some luck, got hired by HLTV about two years later. I'll probably give a more detailed answer about how it happened under some other question.

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you at a event? Also will the answers be on Twitter or answered here?
2018-03-20 09:19
I was scrolling through this topic an hour ago and started thinking about it, nothing was really coming to mind. So I went to take a piss in the airport bathroom, and while I was doing my thing, I noticed a guy taking a shit in one of the stalls - with the door wide open. Not sure if this counts as an "event thing", but it was definitely weird as hell. Also, a bunch of old ladies took pictures with me 10 minutes later since they were so amazed to see a non Chinese person, I guess, that is also a weird thing :D

Do you like the idea of having "superteams"?
2018-03-20 09:31
Wrong reply, will get to this later :D
2018-03-20 11:17
I'm all for superteams, if the superteam consists of the great players that fit different roles (for example the last G2 iteration with shox and kennyS, or the current FaZe). Superteams that are essentially stacked firepower are just a waste of talent that could be used well in other teams.

Are you a real professeur?
2018-03-20 09:52
Not really. The rule is no useless AMA's allowed. What i see from my list of locked threads are a bunch of useless AMAs. This AMA lets you question a writer that has worked professionally with CS:GO for years - That doesn't seem useless in my opinion. If you feel so - Feel free to report the thread, and another admin can make the decision wether it stays or not - i don't find it useless.
2018-03-20 10:04
Oh ok, are the old features (outbox, notification page, guestbook etc) coming back or are they gone? edit where is the rule written down anyways?
2018-03-20 10:06
Pretty sure Jonathan posted a thread with all the rules and Nomad said they are focusing on different things than bringing old features

Hey this probably isn't the place to ask but why not make IP bans last 1 year (account stay banned ofc) its 2018 everyone has a dynamic ip, after a year an ip ban won't stop someone. I say this as I use TOR a lot and when I post on tor on hltv I get a lot of banned IP addresses I need to filter out. It's really annoying when one guy gets 500+ ips banned...

professeur. Have you ever had a bad experience with any pro? (the "pro" being arrogant, not wanting to answer, avoiding you....)
2018-03-20 10:34
Let's be honest, most players don't really want to do intervews nor do they enjoy doing them, but they have to do it because it's a part of their job. However, if they turn you down, more often than not, they have a good reason to do, they don't feel like doing it and would probably give boring/short/shit answers. So most of the times I get declined it almost doesn't bother me at all, of course you'd prefer to have done it, but you move on with the job. About people that were really unresonable, there were maybe one or two players, but ofc I won't disclose who or why. The worst experiences I had were regarding certain titles I used and players that weren't happy about them, people that follow me on twitter might recall some situations. That is annoying as hell, especially because I tend to avoid using "clickbait" titles and things that could be interpreted wrongly.

Most memorable moments while doing your job?
2018-03-20 10:38
In general, it's the aspect of meeting new people at events and getting to know the CS scene at a deeper level through them. Specifically, I think the whole IEM Sydney experience was very memorable, there was that excitement of a massive underdog upset, something I love to see (Chiefs smashing Renegades and eliminating North), that interview with tucks was crazy, then I got in the middle of a veto warfare between karrigan and gla1ve who were both playing chicken with banning Cobblestone, and I also had some sick exit interviews with cajunb and mixwell ("I hate AWPing"). And the whole event was great, the city, the crowd, the matches. There were surely other things, such as witnessing Gambit win the Major and Hobbit's "Just follow your dreams!", but this is the first that pops to mind.

How long do you give CS:GO before the eSports scene starts dying?
2018-03-20 11:20
It's hard to say since CS has been active as an esports for 20 years already and is still one of the games with the best viewing experiences, it can be appealing to both newcomers and enthusiasts. I don't see CS dying until a game that can match it both in the numbers of players and watchability pops up.

If a game is close like 14-14 in score do u have 2 articles written out ready to post for either of them to win
2018-03-20 11:20
You actually just write it as it goes on. If a team reaches 14 you probably already decide for a title and add the last paragraph when they close it out. However, if it's 14-14 you really have to wait until the last second to do everything. So TLDR, you only write one article but not in advance, you do it as it happens.
2018-03-20 11:29

2018-03-20 13:28
I wasn't writing it so can't really say :D
2018-03-20 19:51
I have questionnaire. Since you are on the scene for a while, do you think that esports as a whole will get bigger than the current state? CSGO imho can't go bigger than that cuz it's owned by a private party who gives zero fucks about it - and to think about it all esports will suffer from the same problem. I like to compare it to the UFC who can't squeeze any more juice out of it!
2018-03-20 11:26
I was ignored by THE PROFESOAUR THANK YOU <3
2018-03-20 19:34
I think it can still get a lot bigger, but probably not at the same pace as it was growing up to this point. However, even if it doesn't grow that much in terms of people watching it, esports can still be more profitable for everyone involved if we manage to get more money per viewer. Monetization is key and that's why deals such as YouTube and Facebook exclusivity are key.
2018-03-20 19:52
Do you believe in The Overwatch League? How do you feel about the franchise system? I think you heard about it.
2018-03-20 11:31
Yeah, I actually followed OW fairly closely when it got out since I wasn't sure where I would end up, career wise, at that point. It's sad that they decided to sacrifice all of the grassroots to create a megafranchised league, but I get what they were trying to do. Sustainability and product wise, a franchised league is far from a bad option, I think it can work fairly well in a game like LoL, that developed to that over a period of almost 10 years. In OW it seems forced, they shunned a big portion of the competitors away and practically killed the competitive scene for a year by announcing the exclusive OWL and (allegedly) advising organizations to not invest in their own rosters. There is also the fact that the buyins are simply too high, imho, to get a return of investment on. But the idea of a franchised league was something they could easily sell to regular sports people, for whom 10-50 mil isn't as big as it is to people in esports. Overall, I think it will flop and it will impact esports negatively, but Activision-Blizzard will pocket the profits and move on.

Have you ever played the witcher series? :)
2018-03-20 11:38
I bought Witcher 2 on a steam sale but I couldn't get a hang of the gameplay mechanics, either I'm getting old/stupid or the first couple of fights were difficult for people that didn't play the first Witcher. One of my friends is actually interviewing for a job at cd project red, I told him that if he gets the job I'm buying and playing Witcher 3. ^^ (fingers crossed) However, I did enjoy playing a bunch of RPG's before, mostly on console though, such as KOTOR, Fable, Mass Effect and most recently Demon / Dark Souls. Not that much free time to play long RPGs nowdays, though, rather stick to short, story driven stuff such as Firewatch.

Well, in my city, where I'm living, it's hard to develop English skills, I have co-worker from England and that's it, everyone more like to speak Chinese or Japanese here. (and Russian knowledge of English is pretty bad) And the last question, do you happy working for HLTV?

You can find my path somewhere higher in the topic, but in general, just do something you enjoy on a smaller scale. Local stuff is a good way to get involved because volunteers are always wanted. Get in touch with OG people and learn from those that have been around for longer.

1- why did you guys remove blogs? 2- can you pressure some higher up guys to bring back dreamteam. i really need some fantasy cs to prove my superiority over the rest. 3- did you apply for the job or were you recruited? do you think if i click the link on jobs do you think ill at least get an answer, or should i do it under a different moniker? 4- ex-yugos tend to surprise me with their last names(bojan bogdanovic/bogdan bogdanovic) so do you know the ethnicity of ustilo and naf? and whether they can speak the respective languages? 5- so you cant talk about players that are too arrogant etc. i get that, can you talk about the good stuff that you have seen from a player(s) that most of us dont know. 6- do the talent/analysts treat you with respect? or do you feel sometimes they underapreciate you? 7- are there any talent thats actually is an asshole on the inside but doesnt show their true persona on stream/social media(dont have to name names just confirmation) 8- do hltv pay for your every need during tournaments? 9- do tournaments/talent pay hltv for using their system? 10- do you have a favorite pro to talk to that you are buddies with? ill update if i can think more.
2018-03-20 13:14
blogs got removed because of bad ones ustilo is a croat naf is a serb
2018-03-20 22:41
1. Probably because of too many shitpost blogs, I'm not sure tbh 2. I will pass it along, I'd love for it to return as well :3 3. I applied, about your case, if you don't try you will never know 4. As Deadcore says, USTILO is Croatian, NAF Serbian, but both don't speak the language. (I'm not 100% about NAF though) 5. There are some mega nice guys such as (first popped to mind) steel, TACO, STYKO, MAJ3R etc. who will go out of their way and be really helpful if you need something 6. I don't really interact with talent that much directly, but seeing them reference our interviews on a broadcast means that they read our work and is a motivating factor, for sure. 7. Yes 8. Yep, as long as the expenses are reasonable, I can't really order caviar room service and expect Martin to be ok with it. 9. Using hltv to see stats etc is free use to everyone, including talent etc 10. Yes

Why ignoring me :(
2018-03-20 15:18
Is anything happening in the Croatian scene? I stopped following everything.
2018-03-20 15:25
The tournaments and organizations (teams) are raising the bar while the players are shitting the bed :(
2018-03-21 11:15
Siema professeur. Your favorite team and players ?
2018-03-20 19:35
Favorite players to watch: rain and snax (not in current form, though) Favorite teams to watch: At the moment, probably FaZe and mouz since they have been having crazy grand final matches for the last couple of months, very enjoyable games. But I also like watching lower-tier teams that pull out exciting new stuff, novelty setups, boosts etc.
2018-03-21 11:19
No questions about the glaring hate between Serbs and Croats in our crew.. our forum is losing its touch smh.. Where are the real and deep questions?! What I would like to know is do you think could brcho have been a pro player if he wasn't too busy with HLTV?
2018-03-20 19:54
Yugoslavs hating each other what a suprise :DDDD
2018-03-20 20:04
Very underwhelming, I must say. Anyway, I think it is pretty obvious that brcho would be a sick player if he didn't have to travel for HLTV all the time. You don't see players having that laser-precise headshot aim these days. If not for HLTV, I'm sure he would at least be playing for one of the top three teams in Croatia.

hmm... did u get a bad hotel room at WESG? also, do you think s1mple will leave navi?
2018-03-20 19:56
Nope, the media hotel was fine ^^ s1mple... I don't have any real conclusive info on that so I wouldn't want to speculate :<

2018-03-20 22:59
Probably something on the crossroads of video games and social media/pr/marketing/economics since I'm interested in both. I actually almost ended up as a digital media manager at a video game company in Zagreb before going full time for HLTV, so something like that probably.
2018-03-21 07:53
Also, 10 years, who knows, probably not in the same role I'm doing now, who wants to travel that much when you are almost 40?

Would you rather keep working in the esports branch or find a job fit to your education in computer engineering that would pay better?
2018-03-20 21:11
Esports, at least for now. We will see how this job and esports as a whole develops. For example, programming isn't something that really interests me right now, but it's good to have something like that as a backup if everything goes to shit

2018-03-20 22:52
is it true that croats generally have a positive view of hitler/wehrmacht?
2018-03-20 23:02
Definitely not true. There are some people that have a positive view if the pro-nazi Ustaše movement, Ante Pavelić and "NDH", but not Hitler or german nazis directly. Still, it's a minority of extreme right-wingers, essentially. It's a pretty complex topic ofc

What are your thoughts about the HLTV userbase? namely the racists/fascists
2018-03-21 07:25
The issue is largely overblown, imho, I enjoy reading the comments on news and I think hat the forums are definitely a special place on today's internet.

Best interview you've ever had, or which pro did you enjoy interviewing the most? (I just quickly skimmed through your thread, sorry if it's already been asked)
2018-03-21 07:46
Pro I enjoy interviewing the most: karrigan Easy to talk to, always has something to say, really makes it easy. Favorite interview is very hard since I did so many already. I was proud of the one with allu from Cologne when i did it since he doesn't really open up a lot, even though I revisited it recently and wasn't that impressed

2018-03-21 08:04
Nomad doesn't pay the salaries, Martin does (I know, crazy, who would put him in charge of money) so you are wrong from the start

Do you like traveling long distances and travel in general?
2018-03-21 08:23
I like traveling when there are not too many tournaments stacked in a short period time, that's when it gets tasking. Long distance tbh isn't that big of a problem for me, I load up some movies, good music, a few drinks and the time passes fairly quickly. It's actually nice not being able to communicate with anyone since you have no internet, you get some time for yourself and your thoughts
2018-03-21 11:45
Should martin hire me to moderate hltv foruns 24/7 And pay me 32k a month

Now that you are out of china, How restricted was the internet and was it under high surveillance?
2018-03-21 09:20
You can access HLTV, but can't open any of the big sites such as twitch, twitter, facebook, reddit without a VPN. And vpns work like shit a lot of the times, especially if the internet is bad So it's very annoying
2018-03-21 11:49
You were saved bro. Government of China has even made VPNs Illegal. Maybe because you were tourist that's why they didn't persecute you. Lot of chinese people say VPNs are illegal there now and many sites like Express etc had concerns providing services
