id like for you to say that to the population of Somalia, North Korea, ex soviet era citizens. evil and good exist in this world (as we perceive it) and no matter how shameful it may be. moreover, you have to acknowledge that humans aren't innately good or evil but rather adapt to their surroundings and since we live in a harsh world and the majority of the population aren't highly intelligent or even have a particularly progressive morality; succumbing to amorality is very easy as it is often an easier method of gaining what you want.
i think you can only apply atheism to certain societies, for without religion/god basic forms of humanity will just revert to being animals without the fear of something beyond ourselves. the ability to believe in something beyond ourselves is really the only defining feature of mankind (it is the basis for our current financial world, a company is literally a conception that becomes an individual under law).
admittedly, religion can lead people astray as much as no religion. but it is ignorant to dismiss the relation between religion and Europe's current state as the most 'progressive' continent in the world.
