to be frank, apart from some subgenres to me metal is as "normie" as the next music because it rarely comes with an attitude (in the lyrics) that transpires into your real life beliefs. not only its often about made up stuff but as often it just repeats real life standards.
i listen mainly to punk music (and its subgenres) and the topics that "my" bands use, often are about equality, antiracism, freedom, and such. something thats not completely a thing in the capitalist world were living in; at least i live in germany and we have capitalism here.
you can easily listen to amon amarth or iron maiden and then vote for a right wing party whereas it takes some kind of schizophreny to listen to a band that argues against it. i would also say that some metal bands with their fantasy or nordic hero nonsense even support some ideas that come along with racism/fascism or with some kind of social darwinism, e.g. the stronger one will survive (transfer this in your everyday life, job, or the stupid alpha/beta talk we got so often here, etc)
i do however get your point, i think. also i dont agree about the money making - i think iron maiden even got their own plane so fucking rich are they haha - i surely get the "maybe bands like a7f are more easily accessible for kids" and therefor people who listen to it are not "true". i understand where this idea comes from, also if you think about it, its just another trope that you can see in our real world: separate yourself from others by saying your more real, more worth, etc
but this is getting slightly out of hand now. i didnt want to write an essay, although i think its a very exciting topic. but there are better essays out there that put what i just said in more elegant words and go way deeper into the whole issue. psychology and such.
then again, it feels like kids nowdays only listen to bad rap music and rarely to metal or guitarmade music at all. :)
