Dutch people who know English well, how hard is Dutch? I've been thinking about learning it but I don't know if it's hard to learn. Do you think it would be hard for an English speaker? Is Dutch harder or easier than English?

Why would you learn it ? The country is so small you probably wont meet a single dutch person in your entire life , learn useful languages, spanish, portuguese, chinese, etc

i have to +1 Mr braziliano here, it's a stupid question in this sense EDIT: although you could technically handle yourself pretty well with just english in the netherlands, most dutchies can speak english quite well

Maybe he's debating on living in a country with an easy to learn language? Your guys' assumption is retarded

wow who would chose a country to live in based on a difficulty of a language? not life conditions, maybe some specific purposes, etc

Brazil 1stworlder
Living conditions in western Europe don't differ that much. It's perfectly reasonable that the next thing he looks at is the language that's being spoken, and how easy it is to learn as a foreigner.

that's why i said that the question is stupid >>in this sense<< and then added my edit, can you fucking read or nah?

Yeah and that entire sense is what I deem as retarded. I can read, so can you I hope. But can you also understand what you read? Oh and your edit is irrelevant to the matter at hand.

Don't listen to Brazilians on this site, of course Dutch is harder than English but from all the languages it's one of the easiest you can choose from for you and it's also a bit useful in Africa
2018-07-18 12:49
Go for Spanish or French. It will help you more. Especially since most of the people form the Netherlands know English quite well. I have been living in the Netherlands for one year now and 95% of the people I encounter have no problem with communicating in English.
2018-07-18 03:29
Yeah we have no problem at all speaking english.

Dutch is pretty hard. The basics aren't but our grammar is quite odd and has a bunch of strange exceptions. A lot of our words are relatable to other languages though, so that could help you a bit if you know other languages than English. Working here without knowing the language is possible, but that won't get you in high functions usually. Completely depends on the kind of job you're looking for to be honest.

Yes. Dutch is kinda a hardcore german dialect.

Dutch and English are the most closely related languages so its usually considered the easiest langauge for english speakers to learn

what do u mean we all have a blatant accent LOL
2018-07-18 15:51
Not really, from all the dutch people Ive heard talk they have a very mild accent better than most people from other countries.
2018-07-18 15:53
Well it is pretty hard. It has lots of weird rules, and foreigners mostly have a hard time learning it. Would not recommend, everyone in the Netherlands speaks English.
2018-07-18 04:00
Is it true that a lot of Dutch people talk in English most of the time anyway?
2018-07-18 12:43
No not to other dutch people
2018-07-18 12:46
Oh ok then
2018-07-18 12:48

It is pretty hard. It just doesn't add up to the english grammar and vocabulary.
2018-07-18 12:27
I'm Dutch, and for an native English speaker it's been proven to be a hard task. For Norwegian/Swedish/German/Swiss and even French it's doable, as a lot of words origin from these country's or have the same slang.

One of the easiest languages to learn if you speak english;
2018-07-18 12:38
If you're already familiar with german, it'll be easy since it's basically german with downsyndrome. If you think german is hard, i wouldn't even bother learning dutch
2018-07-18 12:40
I think it's not harder than language like german to learn, especially for english speaker i think it would be one of the easier languages to learn

2018-07-18 15:48
If i don't actually know what? Moronic korean thinks he is more suitable to tell an american which languages are harder for him to learn? As a dutch kid without english in school i learned to speak almost fluent english through watching tv in english, because the language is very similar to dutch in many ways, should help vice versa for a murican as well, keep your mouth shut ching chong
2018-07-18 17:28
The Dutch language is renowned as one of the more difficult ones out there and there are many who would agree to this. Dutch has many similarities with English, which should help learning it more straightforward.
2018-07-18 12:45
Dutch is hard, normally a language is like this : Rules,Rules, Rules , Exception Dutch is : Rules, Exception, Exception , Exception , Exception gl
2018-07-18 12:50
It's hard, our grammas has weird rules and exceptions. If you're going to live here, than learn it. If not than you're fine with english. Almost everyone around here speaks english decently.

2018-07-18 15:47
Theres a multitude of people living here that came from foreign countries and speak very well dutch over the years. Pronounciation is hardest I would say. And people telling you grammar is so hard blablabla is funny, cause u won't use 90% of it anyway after highschool, rofl. If u want it then go for it. I'd say u can be very decent with a fulltime course of around 20 weeks.

Dutch is kind of similar in some ways to English, but it can be pretty tough to learn considering we have a lot of rules and even more exceptions on those rules. -Hard to pronounce for non natives -Confusing word order -A lot of Irregular forms / exceptions to learn These are only some of the troubles you can have while learning Dutch. I'd say it's one of the harder languages to learn.
