Not really comparable, the scene is ever changing. If you look at matches from "fnatic's era" and look at it today, the scene back then looks worse than MDL, and much worse if you look further back. Sure, both teams redefined how to play team-defined CS, both in their own original way, but I don't see how you can look at it any other way than pure statistics.
Furthermore, the amount of professional teams have increased dramatically since then, while having a lot of tier2 teams stepping up. It's not a case of "CS:GO dying", it's a case of the "old" top tier teams not adjusting to the current scene and getting overhauled.. VP being the worst example.
