I think it's a bit more complex than simple lifestyle improvements, although more research needs to be conducted before an accurate conclusion can be reached.

It also depends on why you're depressed. A lot of people are depressed because they do nothing with their lives, so the depression is "cured" when they get a job, a hobby, etc.
For some, including myself, the best thing to do was just to be alone and lay in bed, even though that's supposed to be the worst thing you can do. It got worse every time I tried to force myself to do something. Eventually it just passed with time.
But I'd say it changes from person to person, even if they are depressed for the same reason as someone else. Try out different things and see what works for you.
