US school lunches in a nutshell
 |
United States PsychoLogical
Complete garbage. My school even took away chocolate milk like are you kidding me??. Every US school lunch is practically nothing but garbage and grease, nothing healthy except for maybe some yogurt being sold there.

uni students too poor or way to rich to be seen drinking there.

can't legally drink until you are 21, and lots of college kids aren't 21 yet. maybe that's why nobody drinks in college in the U.S.

A lot of it is, but Yogurt is still better than any of the other crap we get for school lunches. Sometimes the salads are decent but the lettuce tastes like plastic.

Its called "Natural Yogurt" if you want the healthy one. Though kids may find it taste like shit. Its indoctrination of preparing young people such as in this case - OP, to being slaves of the system. In schools they are forced to learn when they can talk and how, where they can walk and when and now they're even forced to eat what they command them to eat.
2018-11-20 18:42
Those guys really need a lesson of what's a healthy food.

fact that you even had chocolate milk says enough. schools should have an obligation to not serve junk, no wonder everyone is so fucking fat in the us when even the school lays the foundation.

You're really not understanding. The lunches in schools that are supposed to be "healthy" arent actually healthy. The lunches changing didnt make any difference in junk food served.

Some people are, sure. And I imagine some are too busy to pack lunch. But I don't think that is the case for the majority, nor for the one posting above on HLTV when he could be making lunch for the next day.
2018-11-21 17:44
I've heard sometimes the problem isn't time or money, but it's just there aren't any grocery stores bearby, so even if some family's want to make food for dinner or lunch they literally cant. So they resort to fast food chains.

In a big city where you have access to different super markets or even farmer markets this should be ezpz tbh, maybe not highest quality but definitely doable
2018-11-18 19:09
When you buy something from outside most of your money goes to the employee costs, not the actual food. For example, a portion of boiled rice costs 0,1$.

for two euros you can even buy a week worth of bread and peanut butter or ham.

2018-11-19 11:32
its perfectly normal for kids in NL to take milk and bread with peanut butter to school, there arent even cafeteria in a lot of primary schools. secondary school sure you can buy grilled cheese every day but lots of kids still take bread from home. really there are plenty of cringey things in my childhood but this isnt one of them.
2018-11-19 11:40
peanut butter very unhealthy milk debatable. dont drink pure milk if u already use it in beverages or for cereal
2018-11-19 12:34
peanut butter isnt unhealthy, it gives you energy to play outside with your friends when its freezing. obviously you shouldnt only eat peanut butter, but it contains tons of fats and protein and calories that growing kids need.
2018-11-19 12:35
inform yourself. processed peanut butter is pure aids. and you basically dont get good, natural peanut butter anywhere.
2018-11-19 12:43
supermarkets here in NL sell 100% peanut butter without anything added. its about 5 euro / kg. the processed stuff isnt really cheaper, it just has some palm oil, sunflower oil and salt added. still 85% peanut. thats a lot of nutrition for 5 euro you can also buy paste made of several types of nuts, which is delicious.

just last week i watched some video on youtube with a friend about a guy who eats like 30yo MREs, obviously not if they went bad, its surprising how long that stuff lasts if stored properly.
2018-11-19 13:30
Sometimes the problem isn't that packing lunch is time consuming or expensive but it's just some don't have grocery stores nearby. So their forced to get fast-food or some other means like a food plan which are expensive.

In my middle and high school we had only fresh food cooked in the morning, most of the courses were homemade and we had special events with cooking shows and classes with chiefs. You had 3 choices as an entree, 2 different main course, a slice of cheese, 2 different desserts and a fruit. Of course any other drink than water was banned. All of this for less than 3€ if I remember correctly.

I’m in a grammar school dropping 20 a week on shitty lunches, mostly grim, unhealthy and unappetising, packed lunch is too much hassle. In my time at school I’d say my parents have spent thousands of pounds on school dinners like it’s ridiculous.

In the US if your household is below certain income levels you get free or reduced price lunch, if not you have to pay (it was like $2.25 for full price lunch)

What I don't understand is why don't parents in the USA just pack some sandwiches for their kids with some orange juice (real orange juice, not the sugary garbage) It's cheaper, healthier, often tastes better, what's the disadvantage?
2018-11-17 14:52
I was going to say the same thing but I just realized it was sitting in my locker for hours. The main thing I hated about school lunches was the wait in line if it was cold. Honestly what is healthy today? Everything is processed. I just go for taste. Only pure healthy thing is if you grow your own food and eat it.

Some parents do, but not enough. The food is actually pretty heathy most of the time except on special days when the have pizza or something along those lines. They normally get a vegetable, fruit, meat, and milk or fruit juice.
2018-11-18 13:56
Sometimes it's just that they don't have access to a local grocery store, there arent any nearby so their forced onto food plans or fast-food chains
2018-11-20 19:42
I liked eating public school lunch, the food was not that bad as people make it out to be. But no chocolate milk :(, that shit was the best part of school lunch
2018-11-17 17:51
Did you go to one of the high funding schools because those are the ones that have actually decent lunch options. I think this guy goes to a low funded school which sucks because he gets shit lunch and an even shittier education.
2018-11-19 02:46
I'm pretty sure all the schools get basically the same lunch options as the food supplied to the schools are all the same. But yes the high school I attended was probably the best one in NYC

It really depends, my high school was heavily funded (the most funded public high school program in the state) yet it still had pretty bad lunches. It depends on how good your public school food district is.

Finland siloquez
That is the typical American view. Actually right now the media is bashing Trump every which way, but before that the news were mostly pro-US. And why the hell do you think the news would be all good from Finland? You have no clue, you think that everything that happens in USA must happen elsewhere too. You have the most brainwashing media in this planet, please do not think it applies to other places as well. OK, it does to an extent, but please.. And besides I take the media as a fat joke, be it American news or Finnish news.
2018-11-19 13:56
you literally just elected a fascist as president. your country is imploding in the political aspect. both parties are losing followers. they are detached from reality. you also havent had any wage growth for 40 years while prices keep rising. people go into more and more debt. so economic implosion isnt far away. dont worry though the EU govts are doing the exact same retarded shit you americans are doing, starting wars, bailing out corrupt bankers, printing 80 billion euro a quarter, electing fascists, so we will all go down together.
2018-11-19 10:31

I think it will be fun however the new political trials and executions won't be fun.
2018-11-19 11:22
the executions are what im looking forward to most. itll really put the fear of god in people. or rather, the fear of the people.
2018-11-19 11:22
idk about your country but there are plenty politicians here that honestly i would not mind if they were hanged. theres plenty of people with morals too, im not supporting completely killing the ruling class, just the worst ones. to make the others think before they fuck people.
2018-11-19 11:24
Don't care about the politicians fuck em but with political trials and purges innocent people get killed to for false affiliation.
2018-11-19 14:05
im pretty sure enough people know who is and who isnt a politician for each party, at least know ah yes this person was minister for that in about this time period, and there are records of their membership and the decisions they have made
2018-11-19 14:07
By political trials and executions I mean trials that convict and put people to death over there belief in a certain party could be politicians could be civilians.
2018-11-19 14:08
This could result in false classification of people into an alienated group leading to an unjustified and undeserved execution.
2018-11-19 14:08
You must watch the news and believe everything you hear. You should really question everything you hear.
2018-11-19 13:12
bro the news- is saying its good that we are printing billions and giving them to the banks. i understand that the people dont get any of that money and banks and investors can use it to buy up everything which is driving up the cost of living. for example, due to policy of my government and the ECB, housing in NL is quickly becoming completely unaffordable. houses are bought for speculation, because they will be worth even more to some other investor in a year. i know the same is happening in the USA. housing prices have increased immensely in a couple generations. this will also play into the hands of the fascists, who will blame globalisation and immigrants. like this, the people in charge keep the population divided over meaningless issues while they hoard all the wealth and charge rent for everything.
2018-11-19 13:16
also our news doesnt call trump a fascist. they just paint him as a crazy person. nobody had to tell me trump is a fascist. i heard him speak. about foreigners, women, minorities, U.S. relations with other countries. he spreads propaganda. his public remarks lead to violence in the streets. hes a fascist. he only understands power. not a hint of respect or decency in that man.
2018-11-19 13:23
why don't you ask your mum to pack school lunch for you? My mom packed my school lunch till in 10th class and after, I only eat raw, fresh fruits in recess
2018-11-18 13:56
Ive heard some communities just don't have access to grocery stores so their forced onto fast-food chains or food plans.
2018-11-20 19:44
doesn't matter. Parents should be packing lunch anyway
2018-11-20 20:26
How would you expect them to pack lunch with no access to a grocery store? And why would parents need to be packing lunch even if they had the resources for it? If the kid is capable to pack lunch then he/she should be doing so. But that's not my point, I'm saying you can't expect all families to be near a grocery store There could be all sorts of reasons, a lack of supermarkets in their community, whatever convenience stores there are theyre may not be quality healthy foods, there could be a whole lot of convenience stores or other small ones like liquor stores (not uncommon in poor neighborhoods) that dominate the community, or there could be a lack of transportation going on, plenty of reasons why it's difficult to have a healthy diet of home cooked mom's specialty dinners and lunch's that we all love but some are missing out because of these reasons
2018-11-20 22:22
If there's a kid in the family, there would be a burning stove with food on it and that food should be in kid's lunch box

2018-11-19 08:32
Hah. Many if not most of teenagers in USA dont even like healthy food because they are used to eat shit and Mc Donalds. If you would visit in example, Finland, and eat our school foods, (it looks nasty but tastes good, because it is produced in big big big pot's and meat is cooked always in oven instead frying pan. ) Chances are, you would say that is shit too.
2018-11-19 08:34
Jesus christ just stop
2018-11-19 09:04
Just googled a little bit and found out that school lunch in USA looks like you bought some ready-food shit from store and placed in on a plate which came from prison. Must say pretty sad that you cant demand better food with money.
2018-11-19 19:29
School lunch is shit in america and has been since the obamas changed it. (It used to be really good actually) But what you said about how its shit because we're used to fast food is just ignorant. They attempted to make school lunch healthy in america, so they now have very little options and a small amount of whatever those options are. But you can just pay for more, so it really doesn't help at all because fat kids just buy twice as much. And at one point you were only allowed 1 milk and it was low fat. So what it really does it hurt the kids that are underweight because they literally have no opportunity to better themselves if they don't bring their own lunch.
2018-11-20 01:51
Amount of hype around milk and how it gets you fat is ridiculous. Milk does not get you fat, eating too much does. Obviously you have to understand Milk has quite alot of calories, if compared to in exampl. tap-water ( rip muricans, no tap-water ). Sadly even here at Finland ( I thought we are smart ) we follow murica and our milk at school is basically water with milk taste and color(zero-fat, no milk-protein). Same time you see teenagers visiting shops more and more, and buying candy-bars, all kind of sweeties and the fattest ones just buy some pie etc... Then we blame milk globally, lmao... So if you eat like 100 KG man when you are school-boy and all you do is sit at school-desk and never workout you end up getting fucking fat. Eat less, better food, If you have to pay for lunch at school why dont you just make extra food everytime you ( your mother I guess ) cooks and pack it in a box. That way I can eat what ever I want in my work ( you can do it at school ) and it tastes awesome. In example, Chicken and rice and vegetables. Very good, and remove the sauces, they are liquid calories only getting you fat and providing zero help to your body( If you workout, or do sports ). Btw, eating chicken and rice, If you eat that and get fat you have big problem. It fills you so much that if you eat it hugely surplus calories your stomach must be hurting and very, very filled.
2018-11-20 18:21
It looks like you're arguing with me. But I already agree on all your points...
2018-11-20 18:23
I didnt really mean to argue, just pointing out stupidity around "Remove-milk hype". But sad true is whole USA is fucked up and will crash, eventually.
2018-11-20 18:24
There isn't really any reason to point out when no one said anything that would go against your point anyway. I get it now, you're just the stero-typical america hater. You've probably never been here, get all your info about the country from news corporations who all just want to make someone or somewhere look bad. And every country will end eventually, nothing can last forever. Even the great roman empire eventually had a downfall. But americas won't be any time soon as it is a very strong country. Much stronger than most. The only difference between america and other first world countries is a much bigger economy and much more media.
2018-11-20 18:30
:D Comparing modern humanity to roman-empire.
2018-11-20 18:48
I wasn't comparing anything, just using it as an example. Because you can't really argue with the fact that the roman empire was a great civilization.

2018-11-21 04:14
Maybe where you live they were, at my school you got an option from 3 main meals and then you could get any amount of side items and uncrustables were also something you could get if you wanted on top of the meal. The only time you would get an uncrustable and milk as your only food was if you weren't on assisted pay for lunch and owed the school money for something.

2018-11-22 15:15
Oh yeah, definitely the majority don't go through this but the people that do suffer arent a small number because of how big America is and how many people it has. So although the majority has access to grocery stores and what not, the people that don't are still alot of people.

I meant for the sake of this topic, bringing up fringes doesn't make much sense to me. I don't think the OP has this issue, like the majority of the nation. Most people *can* pack lunch. It's not a wide spread issue that makes it so they can't. That's all I'm saying.

Why don't American kids bring their own lunch?
2018-11-20 19:02
Some don't have access to local grocery stores because there just aren't any nearby, so their forced to fast food or food plans or something

1: no time 2: a lot of kids are on some reduced lunch plan where the food is either like 50 cents or free

I really don't buy this completely. It doesn't take a lot of time to make a school lunch. I think it's a specific narrow set of cases where time is really the only factor. The cost *could* be a factor, but I still don't think that is the majority.

There was a huge thing in the late 80s by somepolitician that tried to claim the ketchup on a hotdog could count as a whole serving of a vegetable. Obviously a bunch of mom's got pissed af and they reverted that change. Today, schools take money from food companies. Dominos sell pizzas at school specifically designed to 'meet dietary standards' even though it's obviously unhealthy. In the end, an overwhelming majority of school districts nickel and dime their cafeteria costs. I've seen some school programs in Finland and the way they approach school cafeteria food seems light years ahead of the US.

I saw in some documentary that the schools make deals with fast food companies to sell their stuff at the cafeteria without any healthy alternatives, pretty sick shit, setting up young kids for obesity and shit life

Is making a salad (if you want healthy) the night before and putting it into the fridge too hard for some people? I don't understand why schools are responsible for feeding people.

They are responsible for feeding people. But you're right, you can pack your own lunch if you want healthier.

Sometimes there are coming some desperate virgins into the school and serve some bullets 4 everyone in the eating romm of the school. At least in US. This is healty as föööck.
