monitor not 144hz?
Australia RealMrVirus
So i have a 144hz monitor, but I just found out today, that apparently 144hz isn't supported over HDMI cables? But the monitor I have came with a HDMI cable... it did come with some other cable, but it doesn't look like a DVI cable (one side looks like a DS charger, the other is a usb plug). How do I know if my monitor even is in 144hz? I know that testufo.com is meant to be a visual test, but I'm not sure if i'm doing it right? The 144 looks a lot smoother than the 72, if that means its working..

old hdmi cables dont support 144hz, you check hz in windows???
2018-12-06 14:46
but what if my computer is sending 144hz input, but my monitor is only displaying it as 64hz because of the HDMI? Or does the computer know what it is sending?

it doesnt work that way
2018-12-06 14:49
so, in window settings, it let me select 144hz. Does this mean the cable i have plugged in is able to support it?

id assume so, you cant put in hz that your monitor do not support
2018-12-06 14:57
If you are able to select 144hz in your nvidia/amd settings it is 144hz and HDMI 2.0 can support 144hz or you got DisplayPort and think its hdmi
2018-12-06 14:57
I think i have DP and think its HDMI honestly. The plug has a sort of like P in a circle symbol on it. I selected 144hz in windows settings, not nvidia. Do i need to do it in nvidia too?
2018-12-06 15:03
hdmi doesnt support 144hz just get dvi
2018-12-06 15:04
type mat_info in your console and check if its running at 144hz and you can check it aswell in your graphic card settings
2018-12-06 14:48
but what if my computer thinks its sending 144hz, when the monitor is only displaying the 64hz?
2018-12-06 14:50
not gonna happen
2018-12-06 14:51

You can only choose 144 hz in nvidia settings if your cable is supporting it. When its an 60 hz hdmi cable then you cant choose 144 hz in the settings
2018-12-06 15:05
it was window settings, not nvidia i think

Other one is DisplayPort, exactly for 144+ hz
2018-12-06 14:47
Isn't DisplayPort needed to set 144Hz?

displayport looks like a hdmi, but one side i flat. displayport is way better that dvi, displayport also supports 4k
2018-12-06 14:50
just looked up what a display port is, and i think its actually that instead. How do i tell..?
2018-12-06 14:50
it's obviously not a DP cable if it has a USB connector, it's to connect the usb hub on your monitor to your pc
2018-12-06 14:53
i mean i think the cable i called HDMI is actually the display port. I didn't know what the other one was so ty for teaching me LUL <3 Does the USB side go into the pc or monitor?
2018-12-06 14:55
it depends on the monitor but the regular USB connector end goes into your pc the odd looking end usually goes into the monitor and hdmi can look like dp I guess if you don't know what you're looking for
2018-12-06 15:02
the HDMI sorta thing has a P in a circle sort of symbol on it. Does that mean its DP?
2018-12-06 15:04
yep, you're good to go
2018-12-06 15:06
it should say something like "DP" on the side of the port
2018-12-06 15:05
it has a P inside of a circle nvm, its a P inside of a D
