Buying a car in USA
Denmark Lamot
So i am going to study in San Diego next semester, and i want to buy a car for the 5 months i am there. I was thinking a Ford Mustang 2013/14 V6, but how much should i pay? I see a lot of different prices on those cars, and can i save some money if i pay cash? Also what about insurance, any companies i should stay away from, and how much should i pay for the insurance? Anything else i shuld be aware of ? :) -Lamot

No I have not, please tell me more.

Google Search, also referred to as Google Web Search or simply Google, is a web search engine developed by Google LLC. It is the most used search engine on the World Wide Web across all platforms, with 92.74% market share as of October 2018, handling more than three billion searches each day.

kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book), gives pricing evaluations based on make, model, etc.
2018-12-21 02:36
How old are you?
2018-12-21 02:37
27, why?
2018-12-21 02:40
You should be fine. Having less than 25 can be an issue with some insurance companies.
2018-12-21 02:47
one more thing, why don't you rent it?
2018-12-21 02:49
I think renting is more expensive, now i am not sure. But that is also why i was asking here tho
2018-12-21 02:57
I mean, renting a brand new mustang for 5 months would probably cost you something like USD 4-5k and you would not have to worry a thing about insurance, reseling it, or even about maintenance... and there is an extra, you can change your car if you grow tired of the mustang.
2018-12-21 03:40
The cheapest rent i have found is more like USD 7k, but if i could rent it for 4k there would be no doubt ofc.

7k is still incredibly cheap rather than buying one insuring it and mantaining it
2018-12-22 04:10
presumably you sell it when you leave

Yes, but you will get soo much less. Its way chealer to rent it
2018-12-22 06:11
why would you get so much less? used = used, just depends how much km he puts on it

no matter what it would be cheaper to rent, the insurance would be expensive and buying the car would also be quite expensive
2018-12-23 03:32
there is insurance to pay if you rent either way I believe, and renting a car 6 months is also quite expensive although you won't get your money back. only way renting is cheaper is if you may grow the principle spent buying the car in that time greater than the price paid renting + difference in buy/sell price. my intuition is only 6 months, it should be cheaper to buy...

if you buy it will be worth alot less by the time you go to sell it, insurance would be included in the price of renting and would be cheaper
2018-12-23 18:07
I mean, let's be realistic. What kind of car do you expect to get for cheaper than 7k? At least with that, you don't have the hassle of re-selling/insurance/maintenance as the other guy said.
2018-12-22 04:24
Let's say i buy a car for 11-12k including taxes and all. Insurance is somewhere around 400 dollars. And i am going there with a friend, who is an auto mechanic, so he will do the maintenance. So if i can re-sell it for atleast 8k it should be worth it to buy.
2018-12-22 04:49
I get what you're saying, just noting that with the rental you pay a bit more, but it's really for the convenience (and depending how much you're willing to spend on buying, the quality). Though I'd be really surprised if you could get 5-6 months insurance for $400, but even at it's highest you're not looking at THAT much more. Not enough to justify the rental cost-wise at the very least.
2018-12-22 05:00
+ you have no credit score in the US, meaning that you would be forced to make a big down payment when buying the car (maybe even full value)
2018-12-21 03:43
If i buy one i pay cash, so that is no problem

Dont get a mustang A mustang will fail on any unpathed or poor roads. Also the tires are very bad and go out a lot. I suggest you get a more reliable car. (Reliable cars can still be fancy)
2018-12-21 02:38
But i really want a mustang, it's an expensive car where i am from
2018-12-21 02:41
He is trying to be the cool kid on campus. What he doesn't understand yet there are tons of richies at any college so he will just be a normal kid.
2018-12-21 02:42
yeah well no. I just want a Mustang because i think it is a nice car, and also it is crazy expensive in Denmark so this is probably the only chance i would ever have to actually own one.
2018-12-21 02:45
1. Go to a rental place 2. rent a mustang 3. waste your money 4. ???? 5. profit How much does a mustang in dk cost anyway, 1-3 years old? new they dont even cost 40k here lol (aka. Germany)
2018-12-21 02:49
I found a 2013 V6 for around $61000, not many for sale tho, but that is the price here.
2018-12-21 02:52
And i don't even think i can buy a new one for money

That is why i want one even tho it is only for 5 months. It is so fucking cheap compared to Denmark! I would never own one here, but i actually afford one over there :)
2018-12-22 04:59
Btw, i am 27 and have a girlfriend back home, I really do not care about what the other kids on campus think of me.

You would prob be better off lease/renting if you only need for 5 months.
2018-12-21 02:40
I think leasing is trouble, have to lease for 36 months or so, as far as i know? i was thinking buy and sell when i leave

Just know your gonna be paying a lot of fees to get it on the road, sales tax, registration, title. And the moment you drive the car off the lot it will lose around 10% - 20% value you paid for it and if you are in a hurry and are gonna sell it to a dealer it could be more.
2018-12-21 02:48
Yeah, but if i wanted to rent a mustang it would be somewhere around $7k, and the car is priced from $8-12k, do yo really think i will lose that much if i buy it ?

Prob $200+ per month since your out of country, none or little driving history in USA.
2018-12-21 02:58
Oh, that is a lot. That would ofc. be included if i rented one
2018-12-21 03:17
Why on earth would you ever waste so much money on driving a car for a few months? You realize you can literally travel around the world with that with your girlfriend or buy yourself an almost new car back in Denmark? If you are not wealthy and can buy/rent a car without thinking about it, just don't. There are so many other things that would make you happier, lol. Also he is right. The moment you bought it, expect to get $5k less before even leaving the dealership. lmao
2018-12-21 03:00
Yeah well, what if it makes me happy to have a nice car for the 5 months i am in USA ? :)

Buy a cheap car for less than $2000 on craigslist, remember you here for studies so save money for other things like apartment and shit. Insurance here is a must, so cheapest i can think of right now is either progressive or metro, maybe farmers. Insurance comes down to like $50 a month if only liability, which is what most working class people have. Apartments are expensive try to find a roommate before you come.
2018-12-21 02:56
I am going with my friend, so i already have a roommate. We found a place near the beach for less than $700, actually the cheapes we have found so far, and we have been searching for some months now. We are both paying for the mustang, so that helps with the price :)

not bad for only a few months. Unless you want to go for a cheaper car with more miles on it since you are only going to be here for 5 moths. Insurance i'm not so sure , you have to check with what is cheapest in your area. I live bay area so i have progressive, and its cheap for me cos i own 3 vehicles.

Theres no way hes only gonna be paying $50 for a sports car with no driving history in USA and to get liability only you will need to pay for the car in full. If you take out a loan you need full coverage.

yeah that is what i thought, i totally skipped over the wanting to buy a mustang. I was thinking someone coming to us for only 5 months would buy a cheap car less than 2k off craigslist

And the reasonable guy would also do that :)

If I were you I’d go to the kbb website and fine something that is fuel efficient and rent it. Just go for something that is decent and not too expensive
2018-12-21 02:57
I don't want to sound like a jerk but definitely do not buy that car. If you want to buy a Mustang, buy the V8. If not, just buy something sensible like a Honda Civic or a Toyota Camry. A V6 Mustang is pointless and a waste of money. Also, if you're here for 6 months don't buy a car at all. You will lose so much money/time in the process. Rent a car. There are many apps for that these days.
2018-12-21 02:59
The price for a V6 Mustang from 2013 is $61000 where i am from, so for me it is not pointless

you can take a train to SF and LA is like an hour away, probably like a $20 bus ticket. just get a place next to school and walk everywhere. doesnt make sense to spend a ton for a nice car just to have to resell it for way less in a year (unless you're rich, then go ahead).
2018-12-21 03:55
I like the freedom a car gives, and also this is a once in a lifetime for me and I really don't want to think about how much money I am spending. Also i have enough money from scholarships to pay for the car :)

also I hate to say it, but vegas is sooo overhyped. get ready to get approached by "working girls" on the street every 2 blocks, they'll act like they're genuinely into you then you'll take them to your room and they'll say something like "how much money do you have". unless you really into gambling i would mostly stay away from vegas, LA and san diego have a much better and cheaper nightlife setting.
2018-12-21 03:59
Yeah you are probably right, but I Vegas is on my to do list anyway and I really feel like I have to go. If it is that bad then it's only for a weekend anyway.

yeah definitely go check it out for a weekend, just trying to temper your expectations a little because movies and TV make vegas seem like this nightlife utopia. san diego is a great city though, hope everything works out for you man.
2018-12-22 03:36
Obviously experiences vary, but it can definitely be a "nightlife uptopia". However, It can also be underwhelming if you have no clue what to do. Just gotta make sure to plan ahead with activities, which many visitors seem to disregard.

I was about your age and bought a 5yo used mustang GT while in college-even had it checked out by a mechanic- car was nothing but a money sucking nightmare-lesson learned-do not buy used cars that typically have the crap beaten out of them by the previous owners-going to guess the Ford mustang would be at the very, very top of that list.
