The most impressive thing about device for me personally is his insane role change. People tend to forget that he has been an equal 'flashy' and high-paced player like simple in the past when his primary role has been the rifler where he sometimes picked up the 2nd awp next to fetish. He made insane HS-Taps with ANY gun while being a great fast paced awp, too, similar to simple (when he was a main rifler and 2nd awp).
They had similar roles and were basically the same but took completely other paths in their evolution.
When device played a more solo flashy role he was putting insane numbers on the board like simple now, like old guardian or like kennys used to. But the results were mixed. Always close and intense games that could've went either way, similar to Navi now. With ASTRALIS they realised you need an unit of 5 players in CS rather than only one flashy. Being flashy is very risky, as it also can't work out for your team. (Economy can get wrecked, your own positioning on the map can suffer from it when the flashy player dies, the rest 4 of a team have to stay passive to let their star player shine and get much worse - check flamie in navi vs him in past teams, often mentality problems within the team - old ldlc when they traded shox/smithzz for kennys and apex - Still in 2019 shox doesn't realise what he's doing wrong, it's insane.) Also you literally can't be a flashy player for many years in a row, you'll get wrist pain sooner or later.
So what did Device and Simple do?
-Device stopped being flashy and a main carry. He realised CS is a team game. So he stopped focussing on his flashiness and focussed on completely other things ingame what the average 0 iq viewers calls 'boring' - playing INTELLIGENT and with as less risks as possible. He focussed on positioning, utility, trading, communication, TEAMWORK, as they go as a UNIT by 5. When doing that your team has a lot more variaty of doing things rather to just rely on a main star player and being able to push somewhere or don't. And what happened? They turned into the best team in CS right now, simila to like NiP has been in the early years.
IMAGINE this game would be reality, would you rather rely on one guy or go as a well balanced unit?
Another good comparison: CPU in video games. Idk eg go by the best CPU in FIFA (i think it is called ultimate). You feel like the CPU isn't even that good/ plays weird. -> You start to push and let your feelings influence your gameplay and get destroyed 6:0. That's the psychology/mental coach part of Astralis. They make them not get influenced by natural feelings ingame - A CPU doenst have feelings - They play the way as a unit to beat their opponment.
-Simple meanwhile focussed on being the best solo player. Playing FPL (youre literally playing with different ppl all the time- youre playing this game solo.) etc helps you getting better yeah, but as a player and not as a team. The results of the team he's playing will always stay wildly mixed dependig on his game rather on the teamplay. Also remember his early struggles, his very first games as a Main Awper for Navi when guardian left: He tried to play like Device rn, but failed miserably. He was really slow and passive, just watch the demos somewhere. And people expected him to be flashy. As hes a person that gets influenced by other opinions really fast or cares about it (na/taco - simple beef) he sticked to being flashy back again where he developed to the best flashy player now.
And dont get me wrong, i dont hate on simple neither do i dislike him, i'm a fan of both players as they're both insanely skilled. I'm just looking at the gameplay development of CS in general, what's making teams win tournaments and be good. Having a flashy player may work out and can let you win tournaments ofc, but not consistenly. What makes you be the best is a BALANCED (the key!) good and unique teamplay like NIP, FNATIC, LDLC, SK and now ASTRALIS prove. Too many teams do not get this, like Navi. They think it's good to sacrifice 4 or 3 (Now as they use electronic as a 2nd star) players to have 1,2 insane players rather than having a unit of good 5. The same goes for the whole french scene - nbk or shox won't ever understand this and it's sad. that's why i also hope someday to see happy leading a top 5 team again while the others keep on whining towards him. Even mixwell learned french to help them. Ik i'm drifting away from the main topic but imagine an unit of happy, mixwell, kennys, zywoo, kio. that would be such an insane and well balanced top 5 contender for sure. meanwhile we got 2 tier 5 french teams bc both shox anf nbk ruined their scene.
CS 2019 is gonna be great. Astralis, Liquid and Mibr will fight for the No. 1 that year. Ence will be a top 10 team.
tl,dr: read it cow
