Well I'm not 100% on this one but I think Emma is an old germanic name. It's used in multiple languages, for example: Dutch, German, English, Swedish etc (most germanic languages) So I don't think you can call this name specifically for The Netherlands
2019-01-23 13:47
13 replies
That's true, but that doesn't take away that a) it's a very common name and b) you could remove most names since a lot are either taken from different languages or are Germanic in origin.

Did I write Amélie? No I didnt. Do you have reading comprehension problems? "Origin of the name Amelie: An English variant of the Germanic Amalia, which is derived from amal (work). Alternatively, it may be a variant of Emilia (rival)" Did you know English is a germanic language? Which means it is more probable that the French version is a variant FROM THE ENGLISH VERSION

women name ending in -ie is typical of french names : coralie amelie lucie emilie julie etc.. But that not the case of typical form of english women names (where it is more -y (lucy, emily, kelly, etc..) So my guess is Amelie, indeed comes from germanic root into french and then has been taken to french by english (as around 30% of the whole english vocabulary). "The percentage of modern English words derived from each language group are as follows: Anglo-Norman French then French: ~29% Latin (including words used only in scientific, medical or legal contexts): ~29% Germanic: ~26% Others: ~16%" TL:DR : Amelie = German into french into English

Dunno how you ended with that list.. btw -ina or -ia have latin origin, that's why you got them a lot in spanish/italian. In french their equivalent is -ine (caroline) or ie (Amelie), so in fact you are helping me to prove my point.

Not like if I was french. For instance in French : Aiglentina = Eglantine Adalicia = Adeline Albertina - Albertine That's simple, most of the name you gave are so non existent in France that no french site listing origin or meaning have them. Dimitri = Dimitri (greek) Aubrey = Audrey (german) Those two are used in France, and not coming from the classical latin. As many other Julia Giulia July All those are taken form of our regular "Julie" (-ie like Amelie) from other language. Nothing wrong in this, our language flourish with loans to others. And so do the english one too since you seem to like a french name.

The only somewhat close is familiesonlinemagazine.com/french-name/ french: AIGLENTINE AIGLENTINA sweetbrier rose female And yet they are wrong. In France it is "Eglantine" This kind of site shouldn't be taken seriously since they rely on 0 linguistic sources. Again, after 33 years in France, no one have the name you listed above if they have french native parents (but Dimitri). Speaking of : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Am%C3%A9lie_(given.. I guess it close the debate.

?? You google the french version of Amelie and find out it is french. Nice tautology logic. Is it hard to accept possibility that if german word is Amalia, the English word could be Amelie ? Could it be possible that british guy marries german woman and instead of naming their kid Amalia, they named it Amelie, since it is easier to pronounce in English?

I googled Amelie. Feel free to link me the Amelie version in wikipedia . But guess what : "Amélie From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Amelie)" Your own site (even if, according to your above post they aren't rely reliable) : names.org/n/amelie/about "Amelie" is a name of French origin, and it means "Hardworking". It's a name commonly given to girls. A female given name; cognate to English Amelia. Other sites don't speak about origin of the name but still list Amelie as used in France. In your exemple, it is totally possible, I never said french name are not used in english. They used a french word to name their daughter. You are the only one having issue on that.

"Amalia name has several variants, including Amelia in English, Amélie in French, Amalie in German, and Amalka, a diminutive form of the name used in Slavic languages.[4]" Never said France best, or Amelie better than other form. Quitte the opposite actually I don't mind not french name used in France. You are the one aving issue with that. Just said Amelie is french. Period.

Because I told you several times your logic is stupid. You look at "lie" must be french, disregard your own letters. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emilie look there is a counter-example: Emilie is a Danish, German, Norwegian, and Swedish form of the female name Emily and Emilia. Similar variants includes: Emelie in German . Oops its not french, even though you said so in #54. baguette brain

Again, in this very link the french version is exactly as I said "Emilie" English version is not in "-ie". You don't seems to get how"é" "è" "e" are used in France. (Tips : it is useless in name) as we can't even type shifted é without using unicode.

2019-01-23 14:49

Eve is the "official" terminology of initial "Havvah" in french. "Official" as used in the Bible "Adam et Eve", "Official" as September 6th is St Eve, not St Eva in french calendar, "Official" as using the correct french semantic "-e" end. Yet, for various reason, a lot of people don't dare to give it since it is the name of the initial sin, and it is more or less associated to sex in pop culture (pornstar name, underwear brand, etc..). These very french people feel like "Eva" is more acceptable than "Eve" to name their little innocent daughter. And so there are more "Eva" than "Eve" despite being a derivative of it and/or a name taken from foreign language.

I can't tell which is best. Anyway Eve is not really used but in the Bible and in porn/underware brand. So it could be tricky to name a girl like that. Eva is more comon, even in France (despite not being french)
