Change my mind, "anti-passers".
Like, I do not see a single reason why the Viewer Pass is a bad thing to add.
The value you are getting from it is insane:
1. Pick 'Em is fully accessable.
In previous Majors, e.g. London Major, in order to fill in each and every slot you would need around $15, if not sometimes more. Now you get all the slots for just 10. And also, if you wanted to place someone for 0-3, you would have to buy their sticker. And let's agree that spending $1 on a ViCi is kinda an overkill. So, the value is immense already.
2. Souvenir Package is guaranteed.*
When watching the previous Majors, you would sometimes spend hours on stream or leave your PC turned on for ages just to get a drop, and not get any in the end.
Now, just by watching 4 matches (1 on different stage of the tournament), one Package is already in the bag. Combine watching one match from every stage and a succeesful Pick 'Em, and BOOM, you got 2! So now, there is a real point in doing Pick 'Em and trying to pick correctly, and not for some medal you can only get for display. And no viewbot is gonna steal your drops, since they now have a money barrier to get through.
* - if you watch like 4 matches, you get a drop. It's so easy.
3. You are able to choose a Package.
For example, while watching the Boston Major, I received only 1 souvenir, and was a Mirage pack from NaVi vs. QBF quarter-final with Boombl4 signature. I, at that time, thought it was disappointing, since I could've gotten a flamie or a s1mple signature from the same match. So, I sold it quickly, and it wasn't even that expensive, like $2. Now I can get a Package I actually want, like an HR vs. NaVi Overpass collection, which would be my dream package, if that match-up was to happen. Speaking of money and selling packages:
4. You receive your money back partially in Packages.
If you get like an Overpass or a Nuke or a new Inferno, and sell it, you can get like $3-5, so you even get some money back.
5. Graffiti and Medal.
You also receive a cool Medal and unlimited graffiti for the duration of the Major. This is not much, but a cool addition to the deal of, let me repeat, 10 dollars.
So, for a $10 dollar pass, you receive:
- a service which used to cost ~$15
- a guaranteed Souvenir drop of YOUR CHOICE, which is sellable and makes back about $3-5, making it worth $5-7 in the end
- a 3-week supply of your fav team's graffiti
- an upgradable coin as a trophy
That is a STEAL! You not being able to afford that means you shouldn't get. If that is a significant sum of money for you, maybe you shouldn't buy it. It does NOT ruin or damage the experience in any way. If some package is the only thing that gets you hyped about an event, you shouldn't be around pro CS or eSports in general.
"BuT tHe ViEwErShIp Is GoNnA dRoP!!!1!"
Like, come on, why do you care? It's not like you are the organizer of the tournament, the amount of people watching does not affect you in any way, and also, wouldn't it be satisfying to see good viewership knowing that the amount of fake, "package farmer" accounts to be on its minimum?
"BuT I wAnT mY pAcKaGe!!!1!"
Look, it's time to realize that stuff won't come to you for free. The previous system of getting drops could be massively exploited, and Valve had to do something. Not like you had much chances anyway...
So, all "anti-passers", the following message is for you:
Stop being cheap crybabies and appreciate what Valve are giving you for once!
