skiing is suicide
Germany sryInospeaklondon_REBORN
Why do people like skiing so much? It's expensive af and dangerous as hell. I understand that it's fun and all, but imo it's not worth the risk and the money you have to spend on it. Opinions?

skiing is fun and if it was so easy to suicide with it i wouldn't be here
2019-02-11 16:19
And the money? I mean you could easily have a nice vacation in a nice and warm country for the same price.
2019-02-11 16:22
why waste money on vacation in a nice and warm country when you can go skiing

I've been in the mountains in Italy last week I do not do ski but honestly I prefer spending my time in the snow on a mountain rather than lying in the sand on some beach with thousands of other people
2019-02-11 16:35
Casual ski areas are usually even more crowded
2019-02-11 16:38
Then don't go to casual skiing areas. Your argument of skiing being dangerous and therefore can't be enjoyable is lame af btw. You might as well just ask why people go mountainbiking or speeding in a car (e.g. on a track), it would be 10x as safe on your couch.
2019-02-11 17:35
have u ever hit a jump on skis? it feels amazing when ur in the air thats what i like most about skiing
2019-02-11 16:38
Why do you assume those that do skiing holidays do not also go to warm places. There is no law against multiple vacations. Also some live in places where in the summer it is nice, warm and the beach is round the corner so they don't need to travel for the warm holiday unless they really want to.

You literally can rent skiis for 20e for 4 hours and just go... not expensive
2019-02-11 17:31
extreme sports cost money and are dangerous guys
2019-02-11 16:20
Skiing isn't an extreme sport unless you want it to be. As for the money, lots of things cost money and as with most things you can do it on the cheap or be a big spender. For many it is a question of choice and priorities, some want a designer chair, some a monster PC and some chose to travel. And of course some have it all :-)
2019-02-11 17:16
Skiing itself isnt that expensive wtf. skiing trips are
2019-02-11 16:22
that's what I mean
2019-02-11 16:24
You wrote in reply #3 that you could go on vacation for this money. well, people treat alpes trip as winter holidays :D 5 days off, some money and your good
2019-02-11 16:26
not if you live near a mountain cheap hotels near base mountain drive to the mountain for a weekend $150 USD for like 2 days of skiing
2019-02-11 16:27
yeah if ur living in the area its good for you, majority of people need to plan a special trip to hit the good slope
2019-02-11 16:28
Well, but when I went on a ski trip with my class, I had to pay 800€ for 5 days. And we already had group discount for many things. If you live near a skiing area that's maybe different, but for me it was definetly not worth it.

Used to ski a lot, it's just the same as most "extreme" sports really, people love the risk and the thrill of it. Plus if you wear all the proper safety gear then as long as you're on properly managed slopes (and you're trained ofc), you're pretty much safe as can be. Can't speak for people that like going backcountry, I wouldn't myself, but it's understandable I guess, as long as they have the necessary skill to not fuck themselves up.
2019-02-11 16:24
backcountry is the only place where you get untouched powder its the best trust me
2019-02-11 16:26

"Why do people like skiing so much? It's expensive af and dangerous as hell." Expensive? You can literally just rent skis & a helmet for pretty cheap $$$. Dangerous? Everything is dangerous mate, you could cross a street and get hit by a car, you could trip down the stairs & crack your skull, i mean... lol. I dont ski since i have no interest in it, but i think its really nice to go up north in Sweden just because its chill with some nature & having friends & family up there since i live in a concrete jungle aka Stockholm. I mean you could party etc with friends if you want.

2019-02-11 16:53
I can handle my local single black diamonds pretty easy, but the doubles are a bit steep. Probably will hit those later in the season. This is eastern US skiing, so they get mounded up w/ ice pretty bad between storms.

It's fun as heck and great exercise. It also is a great way to get outdoors. I would rather live 10 years with skiing than 15 without imo. The fluidity of gliding down the mountain between the trees or that moment or two of weightlessness after hitting a jump are amazing. Some of my best memories are from skiing man. I am definitely not giving up on it any time soon.

Couple things about skiing Fat chicks don’t ski so if u looking for a nice good looking girl with a nice tight body go skiing. U ever seen a ugly girl pull off her skiing mask???? Nope me ether. Girls with 5 kids(unless married) don’t go skiing to expensive to take all the rugrats Broke girls don’t go skiing. If she is out with a couple of her friends skiing she must have a decent job. If u are looking for a girl skiing is the best place to find one.

It is not that much expensive, especially for us northerners with ski stations not far. Ofc it has a cost, especially if you don't live in a station, but everything has. And has a hobby it is not that expensive. Even compared to competitive video game that bring us here. About its danger, and I'm someone who broke his spine among other things in an "extreme" sport incident (kite surf), as I was in deep in snowboarding before, it can be dangerous indeed. But if you ski by the rules, danger is very low, especially death threat. To a point it is probably less dangerous to ski in regular ways than taking an highway to launch with your grand mother 50 km away. Ofc, people going on wild path, and it worth not just for skiing but for everything, take a bigger risk, but I believe we do that willingly and knowing very well what risks we are exposing ourselves to. So at the end, even those people, perhaps less reasonable than others (and we would have to debate between reason and consciousness here), but still reasonable for most of them chose to live that way and can't be considered in regular skiing statistics. Furthermore, better die in a 100m high fall during an off road trip in eternal snow than hit by a car while going to a miserable job if you ask me.

i love it way too much, been skiining like ever since i know myself. I freeride a lot. If you dont freeride and arent too dumb with your decision there literally no chance for you to get injured, just ski on your skill level, stay on track and dont be a retard to go freeride if u cant do it.
2019-02-11 17:31
We need to travel less. Period. If you like skiing, situate yourself so that you can pursue that hobby. Although some energy and effort is required to maintain an environment suitable for the average skier, it's still a relatively harmless hobby. When I say harmless, I mean for everything else but you. Other people and nature. It might be harmful to you but it's your choice to ski so... There's plenty of worse things to be doing, like anything involving guns, cars, airplanes, golf courses... long list.

if you think this about skiing you should try snowboarding. its great i nearly die almost every run! though usually because of people on skis thinking they own the fucking mountain
2019-02-11 17:37
90% of people that are sitting in landings on jump, blocking run ins, cutting lines etc are boarders or kids. Nearly one tapped a snowboarder traversing a jump landing for no real reason. He was right in the landing zone underneath me as I popped, nearly got that hs one tap.
