Impossible to tell. If someone told me about this new game called CS today, then I would not think it any chance of making it. Some time not that many years ago I was convinced that Unreal Tournament was gonna stay, but look what happened. I bet there are people here that doesn't know what UT is, yet back in the day when the demo of it was released for the next 24 hours some 40% of internet traffic was people downloading the demo! Like CS started out as a mod to Half Life, there where similar mods to UT that turned it into a team based military game much like CS. With the Unreal engine being better and those mods more realistic I actually found CS to be stupid in comparison - why play something that looked worse and was less realistic while pretending to be realistic. Oh how wrong I was :-) CS is still a weird mix between a FPS shooter and a tactical military shooter, there are weapons pretending to be realistic only on the same time players can throw grenades amazing distances, climb ladders while holding a rifle in both hands, hit sniping shots after running since there is no getting out of breath...

+1 What do you think about UT now? Are you sad its gone? What are your feelings for it and the new generation of quake which is sort of non-existent?
2019-05-25 23:19
Mixed emotions I would say. Nostalgia is definitely one of them. I played a lot of UT back then, first as an individual and then later in a team where we took part in a few on-line tournaments. The scene back then was much smaller, then price of hardware and internet connections a much bigger hurdle and so on and there was no pro competitions and I sometimes wonder what would have been if a career as a pro gamer had been an option back then. Playing on-line back then was pretty out there, so much so that explaining to friends that I was playing in a team with people from Finland and the Netherlands took some explaining. It has been years since I last ran UT and I suspect getting it to run and work on-line will take some tricks, the sequels never really took to me in the same way the original did and I suspect many will say the same so as a result the game faded away. The same thing with Quake, not that I was ever much of a fan of that platform - something with how movement felt just made me prefer the Unreal engine + the weapons and maps in UT was more fun. I take you have some sort of relation/history with UT yourself. Maybe you would want to answer your own questions? Plus a bonus one, does AGUT ring a bell?
2019-05-25 23:38
Well said, nah I don't think I've played UT in my life. I always get it confused with quake lol, maybe I did but it was probably UT3. I only played half-life and cs with bots during those days. However, I do take interest in the competitive scene later on in 2010 with cooler and rapha. Just watch some clips on esl channel and full matches. I try to watch the newer games as well. The new quake and how the pros are adopting to it. They are doing reasonably well but the game isn't attracting anyone to my knowledge and is staggering in numbers which is kinda sad.
2019-05-25 23:43
LOL This thread has me all nostalgic now :-) The UT/Quake thing can get confusing. youtube.com/watch?v=7jU5eeSlNf8 Actually Unreal Tournament builds on Unreal which was a single player FPS adventure game that came with a tournament style multiplayer thing as sort of bonus, back then I played Unreal yet never really got into the multiplayer part and only realized it was there because some UT maps vs designated as version 2 ones. And it is the same thing with Quake sort, in that the online game most know of is really the third Quake game aka Q3. I remember trying CS back when it was all new, but found that it pretending to be realistic yet people where running around jumping like rabbits to make them self harder to hit a big turn off. I wanted it to be more "realistic" so instead I stuck with the over-the-top gaming in UT - from UT I remember 10 person every man for him self games where the FragsPerHour counter could sometimes reach 600 ie. winning matches having averaged a frag for every 6 seconds. CS is so slow in comparison. Playing UT pretty competitive I remember one detail that dsq UT2003 for me, the game was much prettier only to be playable on slower hardware one could turn the graphics details down. That is normal in games only on UT2003 there was one map where one would run around on grassy hills and could sort of hide a bit in the grass and when doing so ones vision was also obscured a bit, except if one had turned down the graphics there was no grass meaning to be competitive one had to turn down the graphics details :-(
2019-05-26 00:16
hehe its great you get nostalgic. I'm not as old viewer as you but im still nostalgic about 1.6 and browse past clips from time to time. Im happy im not the only one stuck in this loop lol. Great you share the experience. DO you still follow any quake pros these days?
2019-05-26 00:39
:-) Nope - not following any of that. In fact I put my hard core gaming aside and sort replaced with working instead, did a stint at a software house as a programmer and gaming took on a more casual role with me spending more time mountain biking and the like. In fact I sort of must credit Astralis for me getting back in to FPS. With them putting eSport in the public's eyes here in Denmark it made me brush up one the whole scene, as for a long time my gaming has been mostly single player FPS or the Gran Tourismo on PlayStation. Do you think CS has a future past the next couple of years?
2019-05-26 00:56
Yeah Astralis really made a huge mark in CS. Idk if you remember denmark were one of the first few countries that try-harded in the cs scene but never achieved as much as Sweden but did make a few impact in the name of SoA, SK.DK, KK Clan and other organizations wow you played Gran Turismo as well? haha your like and older me lol!! That was basically me from 2000s to 2004s. CS, Half Life and Playstation haha. Yeah I do think it has a future but I'm not sure if it will still attract newer players or not and with all this talk about 'bubble' bursting I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

+1, when i think about UT and Quake it starts to be nostalgic and frustrated in the same time. When i look at UT 4 and QC. no one want to play them. This both are amazing games different and unique fast, skilled and precised, Even UT had a game mode "last man standing" where was like BR mode this days. UT had some amazing movement and game mods back in time Assault,Bombing run, Double Domination, FC, Death match , arenas 1vs1, competitive 1vs1, (2vs2, 4vs4, not sure 100% for this) 5vs5
2019-05-26 00:52
Agree. It is in some ways odd that neither UT or Quake lasted well. Not sure why, but a theory of mine is that in a way the sequels to both diluted the games by being to different where in contrast with CS changes has come much slower so no fans where pushed away. Or putting it differently, big changes sort of makes people likely to try other completely different games since why not when what they loved was sort of gone anyway. Or maybe there was only really room for CS to survive. Maybe I should see if I can get the classic UT to run on my current rig. Should be interesting to see if it can be done, if it will work in 4K resolution and if it is even possible to connect to a server (if there is even one out-there). Step one will be to find my treasure chest and locate the CD with the game,
2019-05-26 01:09
i think if this games were released this days with such amazing mechanics and mods and skins and they became a e-sport probably they would survive. Even when i start to think this both games had a tons of skins and way to mod them. If we look right now if want to have all skins and if you have to buy them and were way cooler, it be like thousands $$$ in this days EDIT: even UT music was like a bless for my ears, and i think UT was the game who first put like "Double kill",etc to "holy shit" "godlikee" and girl and female variation of the voices, and more stuffs like this

im fearful for the future of cs it looks really bleak with valve dropping the ball on csgo. would it be on source 3? The only reason CSGO was even made was to stop PROMOD from getting better traffic and polished game so Valve capitalized on this and 'created' a new game which killed the project indefinitely.

promod was nothing special and nothing new , it was 1.6 movement and spray with taps of cs source.
2019-05-26 07:22
I find it hard to believe CS:GO was ever developing, when pros decided to turn to CSPROMOD for the future only then Valve begun development. Prior to the noise created by the community there was not a single news about CSGO. Valve sniped promod out of existence.

2019-05-25 23:54
Why would they make new cs? csgo united 2 cs games but i cant see reason why would they make new cs in next 10 years

idk, back when csgo first released everybody said that it was worse than source and that it had no reason to exist. you probably right, it will take a long time but imo valve will release a new cs at some point.
2019-05-26 00:02
why would they csgo can be developed as far as you they want to. No need to release a new game and be potentially loosing players

No way they gonna release a new cs in the next 5 years. They make a lot of money and a new game could kill the market.

Essentially they say that esport are not profitable for companies, and they pay and waste a lot of money rn (bubble), money that they just lose.

Esports at its own will make 1.2 billion this year. But i wonder if its worth to pay 20million for a spot in the overwatch league.

Problem is kids these days dont start playing cs... they play fortnite or some other shit. I dont think that cs will get many new player but the current playerbase is rly loyal and wont stop playing. Maybe if one day we get a new cs, new player will try out the game.

2019-05-26 02:09
CS will die, but it will respawn next round so don’t worry
2019-05-26 02:10
if valve keep trying to make the game easier and easier to be popular, yes. cs is alive nowdays still, cuz its an unique game, somehow valve is trying more and more to kill the cs vibe nerfing guns, making easier guns better, etc

i wont think that, look of example the mobas game, dota is so much hard to play than league of legends, yeah lol is more popular, but for how much time? who played dota dont play lol

cs was unique, and survived so many years because of that now valve want to make popular, this will kill the game, cuz wont feel like cs, it already dont feel atm anymore, just a matter of time
