is german really hard?
 |

how hard can german be for a decent english speaker? germans and german learners, what are the most difficult things you suffer from? articles? complex words? pronunciation of words?

That is only true because Danish, Swedish and Norwegian are closely related to German (they are in the Germanic language family). However, Finnish is not a Germanic language and is not related to any other European language except for Estonian and very distantly Hungarian. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uralic_languages

As a German I can say that there's a ton of grammar rules that you have to learn, words are longer than in most languages because we just combine words that "describe" the new word: "Kühlschrank"(refrigerator)="Kühl"(cool)+"Schrank"(cupboard) you can literally add as much words as you want to as long as it makes some sort of sence like: "Arbeiterunfallversicherungsgesetz" which means "work accident insurance law". It's a hard language for sure but I know a few people who live in Germany for just a few years that are fluent but all of them still have problems with the articles. German articles are a pain in the ass even for Germans
2019-06-14 20:07
I dont know how hard it is to learn but German makes sense not like many other Languages but once you understand der die das / er sie es it probably becomes easier

2019-06-15 00:41
I think you need to learn for your own. A language in school is Just another course to Pass it felt like for me. English was fine in school but I learned my english from YouTube and playing Video Games, Not really in school, while french was horrible with the teacher we had. Now, looking back at it, it is kinda sad, that I never really learned french.

The Pronunciation is a hard thing for german beginners tbh, and we also have letters like ä, ö , ü, ß ... most foreign people dont know how to talk out these letters correctly, but I think its a pretty hard language to learn :D

Its not incredibly hard. The UN has made a list language on the difficulty when they have to train ambassadors to go to other countries. They rank German has the only catagory 2 language. 5 is hardest, 1 is easier. 1 consist of danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, spanish, French and some others (so you can compare) Sorry that I can’t find the website where it says the categories:(

I'd say it is pretty hard. It has a lot of grammar rules to learn, but also a lot of exceptions of these rules which makes it even harder. The fact that we have three "genders" of words with different articles and pronouns is a factor as well. If I compare it to English, english is way fucking easier
2019-06-16 12:26

in many ways, it's really close to the English language, but you're going to struggle with articles, and adjective conjugations.
