I'm moving to England..

Venezuela SchizOffective
Specifically to london where i will be studying a postgraduate degree. I was hoping to see what info some of you could give me about the city, whole england and maybe the UK too. Serious or not so serious tips and facts are well welcomed because if i ask in other forums people doesn't express themselves freely afraid of being banned. Popular culture and not so polite stuff is what i would like to hear from you. I will be my first time living in EU (UK not EU after brexit?), i have visited some EU countries but not for more than 3 days. I also lived in the US several years ago when i was in high school . I say this because in spite the fact of coming from the worst country in latin america, i have a small knowledge of being in 1st world countries (i know is funny joke here in HLTV but of course US is 1st world).

Honestly, London's a big place, some parts of it are really nice but some places are a bit of a shithole. I think if he's going to uni there he'll be in the nice parts of the city so

Tower Hamlets doesn't have very good internet
2019-07-13 04:18
UK overall doesnt have good internet, compared to other countries.
2019-07-13 04:24
yes i was searching what was tower hamlets but i thought the internet in england was really fast i would say london should have a fast internet but i don't know since i have heard that italy has bad internet too so i guess i might be wrong. Hotel internet is one thing but i guess in a common flat or apartment it might not be.

I live in the North, fairly rural but its a big town. I have the fastest internet i can get in my area and its only 60mb/s download but it costs £60/month with calls, So its expensive.
2019-07-14 01:41
15th fastest isn't really that bad. It's more the prices.

Well I have 350 mb/s and it's £92 per month but that is including TV and phone line, still expensive though compared to other countries.

Ugh that bites. But depends what kind of TV and phone contract you have.
2019-07-14 01:47
Phone is just the line, pretty much nothing with it. TV is Virgin media. It's got like 400 channels which is quite a lot but not all. A lot of sports and film channels are still behind a paywall.

They look bad compared to France because France has arguably the best food in the world and pretty much invented fine dining afik, but obviously not everything they cook is bad. It's pretty much what you'd expect from a cold place near the sea. Lots of potatoes. fish, meat, baked beans, and hearty foods. Will surely be a culture shock coming from the chile peppers are grown here so our food is spicy zone i.e. South Asia and SA. But there's good restaurants everywhere these days now that small businesses can get some attention thanks to internet reviews. They also love curry sauce on rice with meat and kebabs as well, so some influence from Pakistani immigrants for sure, especially in London However in a global business hub, and what i assume is a quite diverse city like London you can find amazing restaurants and food from all over. edit: you may find the accents hard to understand at first if you haven't heard a lot of British media before, but it'll be easy if you're fluent in english, which i assume you are.
2019-07-13 06:32
ok yes i guess there must be a restaurant for every kind of food or international dishes. Despite i'm fluent in english with some mistakes of course the US accent is totally different from the british one and the most difficult thing is that in every city the accent changes and i don't even want to think about rural areas where it changes even more. As long i don't stay playing csgo in my room and hang out with people i will learn it fast.

I think that if you are able to get to the point where you're perusing a post graduate degree you will do fine learning the local accent :P. If you want to prepare yourself a bit for the new sounds there's a wealth of content by British people online. Maybe you could watch some old monty python or something, it's pretty iconic and maybe can help you to learn the culture and the language differences at the same time. youtu.be/886hNDgwfMk Also "an idiot abroad" is one of the best english shows ever made in my opinion, here's a bit from the main guy. youtu.be/wxvWlWsnWh0 The subtitles will help to demonstrate how they say some letters differently than Americans. Unfortunately English isn't as phonetic as Spanish so some words are pretty different, and of course some phrases are as well, but that's the same with every language. one weird one for me is how they say "innit" which just means "isn't it?" which pretty much means "¿no?" Many times they don't say the "h" at the start of words

"bollocks" means "cojones" "chuffed" means happy "piece of piss" means easy "taking the piss" means messing around "wanking" is masturbating being a "wanker" is like an American calling someone a "jackoff" or a bad person/cabrón pretty much. "fuckin hell" is pretty much "dios mio" There's a lot of "shit" based swearing as well, english speaking people love saying it, pretty much substitute it for bad but worse than that. "cheeky" is someone who's disrespectful but in an amusing way. "racket" is just ruidos, or the name of the bat people use for tennis. "you alright mate?" is like asking how are you. But if you say it in a more serious tone it can be response to seeing someone in a lot of pain. "knob" is a slang for penis "knocking about/around" means to just be around a place with no specific purpose or to ask if someone has something extra if you were borrowing it. Sort of how random things in a backpack are bouncing and knocking off each-other, "coach" is just a big bus "lorrie" is a big cargo truck for shipping on highways. "gob" = mouth "shite" = shit "gobshite" = a mean or hated person Okay I typed too much, I was just watching the video and saying some slang definitions I know from watching brittish tv my whole life. youtu.be/Whs5mV9va7A Here's one where he went to Mexico

Can I ask where exactly your staying in London?
2019-07-13 15:31
I will try to get something as close as possible to the university because the on campus price costs are way too much exaggerated. So i'm talking about south or north london mayyyybe central london. To be sincere if it happens to be too difficult i won't have other choice rather than living on campus. The U is Goldsmiths university of london.

Hope you have fun out there ! There’s plenty of good food in England if you know where to look. In a good pub, I’d recommend trying stuffed pies, having a pint of bitter and enjoying life. Otherwise there’s tons of different food chains, all the spices and whole foods in the world (Marks & Spencers for example) and such so the « bad cuisine » is a bit of a meme nowadays. Obviously when it comes to the rest you’re gonna see some shitholes, potentially. Just avoid these and you’ll be fine, it’s the same here in Paris, here you don’t go to the Eastern suburbs and North Eastern parts of Paris. In London? Can’t say for sure, ask the locals or some friends you make over there. BE CAREFUL: don’t believe most people on the internet, they’re full of shit and most of them have never even been to London, let alone England. You can listen to me though )))
2019-07-14 01:54
UK just like US have tons of fast food restaurants, many of them are murican too
2019-07-13 19:42
That maybe is true when it comes to local cuisine. But the fact is, nowhere else in Europe can you get such diversity of food as in London. There are many things I dislike about living in this city but this is one of its perks.

Go ahead and rate whether or not a country is a tier 1 country in the gop. Fact is though, Germany has total health ensurance ALWAYS no compromises even for not working people Germany has tuition free schools and colleges Germemay has free or 50% free loans for students. Germany has a living minimum wage Germany has a level of safety for people who can for whatever reason no longer work so they have some income to survive Germany has actual affordable or free child care Germany has a democratic politic system where more people actually decide who wins an election not like the US ...... I can go on with dozens of more things in case you are interested. Fact is aswell that in Germany the main reason for private bankruptcy is not Healthcare and here don't die 30000 people a year because they can't effort health care. > no Healthcare & living wage > tier 1 country pick one PS: Italy does not have some of the things mentioned above and a fucked up economy

Brighton (one of the nicer places in the UK, I think), I’m at college, and I hate the people, and just generally much prefer mainland Europe, so much so that it has probably distorted my view of the UK, but whatever. That’s not even mentioning the quality of life, which is comparatively, and generally, better on mainland Europe.

You will be fine. I'm in East London, which many people consider bad and I regularly have midnight jogs without getting stabbed or robbed. The crime rate comes from gangs fucking with each other really
2019-07-14 04:14
Stand on the right, and be prepared for expensive life. Starting out in London from zero can get difficult.
2019-07-13 19:56
my condolences... I hope it wont be to bad for you. Before Brextit, going to live in England made sense because.. well EU.. After when the fact hit, people lose work, things will cost more, no jobs. not people enough in healthcare something they already are fighting, not enough people in food industry.. Its gonna be worse. I hope you have a good amount of money in the bank to make it. And well. hurry away as soon as you can..
2019-07-13 19:58
Yes i'm a little bit worried about the whole post brexit situation and this is sad because my plan was or is staying maybe not in london if it is too difficult to find a good job but in others cities like liverpool, manchester or leeds which i'm not saying is easier but i guess there is more chance there. I wouldn't like to return to my tier5 country and neither to the US, so i was hoping to stay in the UK or maybe another EU country but well we will see..

Where were you in the US if i may ask?
2019-07-14 01:58
I lived in miami, boston and houston, visited new york, los angeles, san francisco and nashville. Don't get me wrong i did enjoyed having lived in the US or at least in those 3 cities but i would like to try an EU country as i have the feeling that the experience should be very different, you know culturally speaking and stuff like that. I would return to any US city hands down rather than returning back to latin america.
2019-07-14 03:31
Well maybe choose a country that isnt either rated at 3 world countries in many things like crime, poverty, healthcare, unnatural deaths, murders and what not like the US. Or a country that because of the greed of a few men, that wont have to pay the price of there lies about Brexit, is gonna have a very hard couple of years, and will never be able to reach the hight it could before because they cripple themself. Even if you forget all the reasons its simple math to know that the possible top for how good the everyday man can have it, and the country will be less outside EU since everything will be less from money to people. so where in EU the sky was the limit if improved, outside it,, well.. its less. and that is even before we talk about all the issues that will hit the first years.. As said.. My condolences.

2019-07-14 01:35
how did you get to uni in uk?
2019-07-14 03:24
if i understood your question, i applied online and got accepted and i will be starting this september. Is of course easier to say it than actually doing it but yeah that is that
2019-07-14 03:38
what exams did you write
2019-07-14 03:48
they asked me the common post graduate requirements: the bachelor degree, english proficiency proof, other previous education and experience in the field. Depending of the uni you apply you will have to be interviewed. The funds proof to pay all the thing also. I have to tell you that applying as a non EU/UK citizen is 100% more difficult and even the tuition skyrocket, i mean if i have to pay 18.000€ for a year of tuition a citizen would play 8k or 9k 10k max or maybe even less than that. Not to mention the need to translate all qualifications and documents that are not in english by an official and registered translator in the UK.

I live in UK and have family in London so have been there alot too. To be honest i actually like England, free healthcare is awesome, london is a really cool city with stuff going on all the time and its pretty cheap to live here compared to alot of other countries (i think). There are some downsides. For example the weather sucks 99% of the year also people in London are pretty rude so i personally keep myself to myself when im there. If you have any questions about london or England i general, just pm me.
2019-07-14 02:01
London is rated as one of the most expensive cities to live in. Healthcare is free, depends on who you are. Also most likely will have to change after Brexit since an already limited healthcare personal is avalible.. its understaffed, not enough doctors nurses or ambulances and so on. and many is actually none UK already. those that wont have to leave can stay, but it will be harder to get new people in, so yea wont get better. Ofc, that is just one issue that no one in England is talking about.. there is also the food, and fishing that will go out of buisness, and companies leaving, well.. Many thing will change.. and many jobs is being worked by those they deem the enemy and they are not even enough. since there is a lack of police, doctors healthcare, teachers.. well everything... People really got screwed here by the lies told by those who wont lose anything because there job is safe no matter what.. its only those normal people that will suffer.. many ofc voted for it and therefor is to blame. But that is what lies can do in a democracy.. because so many have so much power, but so little information.

yes i agree that things will change in the upcoming years, changing for the worse in my opinion. I think anyone can be treated through nhs if your a citizen maybe? Im not sure to be honest, and beggars cant be choosers. The nhs is understaffed and probably always will be but its better than paying outragious fees like in the US for example.
2019-07-14 03:21
nothing here is free. all public sector services are paid for by taxes, be it income tax council tax or some other tax. you dont get billed directly for it but you still pay for it

Yes but you have to pay taxes everywhere. Just here you get healthcare at no extra cost as a bonus :P
2019-07-15 21:49
33% of your wages is quite a big tax though and the other taxes are on top of that

paye and national insurance usually adds up to 1/3 of my wages give or take. i know national insurance is my state pension but it is mandatory and i'm fairly certain i wont get half as much out as what im putting in
