Nordic countries(especially Finland) come here.
India ground0
I am travelling to Finland this September on a work permit, supposedly lasts till the end of February. I will be receiving 1000EUR/month excluding the rent(accommodation is at the expense of the company). Do you think the amount is enough to cover my daily expenses with a bit of travel here and there across the Schengen territory? I really would love to visit as many places as possible without much hurry as I will be staying for about 6 months. My current plan is to visit some country in mainland Europe and then travel around via bus/train. Any tips on travel/living are welcome :) PLS HELP MENS

It's not too bad mate. Its very easy to get a good job in the Computer Science field as all the knowledge is already available on the web. If you have interest just pick up basic languages, OS and DB. EZ job EZ money. Also remember however good you might be, a little bit of luck will take you miles ahead. Eg: My friends who used to come to me to get their doubts clarified earn more than me in India(I was playing CSGO all the time during placements lul), but I got a little lucky as I am getting to travel. Since you are still at college, make the most out of it, GL mens ))

2019-08-08 15:05
Programmer but only 1000euro/month? Rip off
2019-08-08 15:34
cheap workforce he's indian so they're not gonna pay him average salary
2019-08-08 15:35
true but he's letting himself be under payed alot
2019-08-08 15:35
Not exactly tbh, its just a short stint for about 6 months, also #135
2019-08-08 15:37
Still sounds like bs that they would pay you that amount, they're either a pretty small time company or they are just using you xx
2019-08-08 15:38
Interesting, maybe they are exploiting me after all. But that is still around 2500 ish NET, given that taxes in Finland are pretty high, dont you think its almost equal to 3000 ish gross or something?
2019-08-08 15:41
Don't get me wrong It's a great experience, but 1000/month is extremely bad even 2500/month is decent but average wage in Sweden(I assume Finland has similar wages) for programming is around 3500/month after tax
2019-08-08 15:46
The average salary for programmers is not 3,5k euros after taxes. Its around 3k euro or circa 32k SEK before taxes.
2019-08-08 17:26
different sources)
2019-08-08 18:03
Well your sources are shit because the average salary for programmers in Sweden is not 70k SEK before taxes (what you roughly would have if 35k SEK is after taxes)
2019-08-08 18:05
probably missread the after taxes part
2019-08-08 18:10
1000 + accommodation + 800 back in home account, not the best, not bad either I guess. I only wish to travel a bit here and there.
2019-08-08 15:36
Oh ok. Depends on how big the company is.
2019-08-08 15:37
If this is without taxes its great man
2019-08-08 16:55
thanks mate. But I do think there is some truth to what others are saying about me getting paid less. Hopefully, it fulfils a little of my wanderlust :). Want to save as much as possible from the 800 that gets deposited into my home account.
2019-08-08 16:59
Mate, they are talking out of theirs asses. 3k after taxes + accomodation in Scandinavia lmao GL. You get taxes 50% on that so you'd have a 6k monthly salary which I doubt many people here have (age considered) I think what you get is okay, but not more. More fair wouldve been 1400 or something + the 800
2019-08-08 17:22
If u write code for med/high size company, u should get rent + 1800-2200 €/m minus taxes.
2019-08-08 18:45
almost same mens. 1000 in Finland + 800 to my home account(which I wish save) + accomadation in Finland :)
2019-08-08 18:47
Its good, i get 2640 €/m no rent, but other benefits are good (food, phone and i can work from home).
2019-08-08 18:52
Nice, is that your first job or you do have prior experience?
2019-08-08 18:54
its my fifth job, but first in programming.

2019-08-07 20:09
yes gl men)))))
2019-08-09 17:09
yes is will for sure, what would the rent have been though? 400?
2019-08-07 19:00
They've asked to select one among 5 homes. One of them has a private sauna :P , will try to block that one. Most of the rents are b/w 700-900. Close enough to Helsinki hence the prices I guess
2019-08-07 19:02
So what, a house? I was thinking more of a 1 bedroom appartment.
2019-08-07 19:03
Yep my bad, its 1 bedroom apartment, but a big one at that, 65sq.m. But they showed me a house as well which looked a little old for the same price with 2 bedrooms
2019-08-07 19:09
Sorry but do you mean square meters? In no way did they tell you square miles. Only america uses that shit because they are incapable of learning the metric system. If 65 square meters then that is massive. Might as well be 2 rooms. Still even with 65 700-900 is absurb, maybe like in centrum of a big town but even there i would say its overprice. But if they pay it for you then whatever right..
2019-08-07 19:28
sq.metres ofc :P. Yeah, accommodation is at the cost of the company, I get 1000EUR net(after taxes) to spend. Do I need to get D vitamin tablets/whatever to compensate for the fewer hours of sunlight?
2019-08-07 19:31
I mean if you want right xD Its not an requirement haha..
2019-08-07 19:33
You should be payed more, wtf, this is nothing
2019-08-07 20:10
Actually my home(back in India) pay still stays which is around 800EUR. Also they are bearing the cost of accommodation, I guess it is fine. What do you think is a decent salary for an immigrant with just an year of experience? It is mentioned 1000EUR net, guess its after tax deductions.
2019-08-07 20:14
It is nothing compared to saleries in the nordic countries, but geuss you are right, you need to look at it with India perspective. Me? Leaving home for 6 months? Accommodation and 2.5/3.000 euros (after tax)
2019-08-07 20:17
Hmm fair enough I guess, as your cost of living far above that of India. From what I gathered from my colleagues, for long term resettlement, people get paid the local salaries. Mine is considered short term, as it only lasts for about 6 months which results in me receiving monthly wage rather than standard yearly pay.
2019-08-07 20:26
Ok - but if you are happy with all is good!
2019-08-07 20:32
Happy to travel to a Nordic country, did not think too much about the pay. Getting to travel here and there of Schengen territory will be a huge bonus. Will probably watch the Arctic invitational and any other events nearby.
2019-08-07 20:36
Yes, that is a luxary aswell. And quite different from India. For sure an experience for u. Have a great stay.
2019-08-07 20:48
Friend you are getting fucked. What they are doing is not legal. I work in secondment for oil & gas in the Netherlands. When importing an foreinger to come and work here, they are forced by law to pay you atleast 4500 euro's gross(if you are above 30, else around 3600). This is excluding 8% holiday . This money has nothing to do with them paying for your house, thats their own choice and you should still receive 4500/3600 gross euro's You are getting FUCKED hardcore or you are lying about going to work there.
2019-08-07 20:36
Not lying. Getting fucked? maybe :(

Don't come. I saw some guys at the sport field another day and first I thought: "Nice, immigrants playing Pesäpallo, that's nice that they are learning our culture." Then I went closer and saw some Indian dudes playing crocket or what ever is that stupid game you play there.
2019-08-07 19:05

No way that we have a national team in crocket. Winter is all about clothes. If it's too cold you put more clothes on. Personally I can't stand heat, you can't do nothing to deal with it.

Geographically is more Scandinavia than Denmark since northwestern part of Finland is in Scandinavian Peninsula.
2019-08-07 20:15
Geopoliticallly it is. I agree with you on a purely geographical basis. If you include politics into this then historically denmark was more associated with Sweden and Norway whereas Finland was to Russia.

You could easily live off of that in Norway if you are somewhat careful on your spendings, so I guess you could in finland aswell (Pretty much everything is cheaper).

Wow good to hear. Being a little careful, will I be able to accommodate bits of travel here and there?? Would love to see the Northern lights etc.

If you're gonna be exclusively eating out (nothing fancy) and having a beer or 3 on the weekends, you should budget about 200 euros per week just for getting around and being fed. Since you have your own appartment i strongly recommend doing groceries and cooking yourself, it will save you a looooot of money. And after you get the hang of your spending, flight tickets around northern- and middle-europe average somewhere around 200 euros i'd say. With travel you will need to find accommodation, though, and that's all up to you. Hotels are expensive, airbnb is mostly on a good level afaik.
2019-08-07 19:28
True, but I am not any good at cooking, will probably learn a couple of simple and tasty dishes, which I can cook every other day. I don't think flight tickets are that expensive if you book in advance of one month(around110 ish). The first couple of months will confine the travel to Finland.

Vantaa is awful but at least it's a city - stores, pizzerias, buses and all that! I'm sure you'll have a great half a year though, 1k per month is plenty.
2019-08-07 19:52
thx men :)
2019-08-07 20:08
When you cook for 1 person, then make enough for several days. A pot of pasta sauce or curry to last some days, and then boil new pasta or rice every day and put reheated sauce on top. Then you only have to cook for real twice per week. Eating out in the Nordic countries is very expensive. At restaurants you will also have to pay a lot for anything you drink. You can easily pay 3-4 Euro for a coke. So takeaway is cheaper than eating out, but also a bit sad.
2019-08-07 20:42
Great tip, will surely keep this in mind. Best if we get to pay and eat at the office itself, would be cheap and healthy at the same time without me having to cook except for dinner and weekends.

Tbh 1000 euros/month is quite tight if you want to travel. Remember that you don't need to waste money on water bottles as you can drink straight from the tap everywhere.
2019-08-07 20:00
Even if it doesnt include house rent? Just curious, does the tap water turn into ice during winter???
2019-08-07 20:01
as a canadian and a person who's traveled to finland during the fall I'm pretty sure that does not happen

Must be a bait at this point. Water pipes are located under the ground, where temperature doesn't go below 0 at any times. So no, they most certainly don't freeze. Also it's flowing all the time.

I'm only joking it's a meme from a Finnish image board. Here is the latest Helsinki tap water quality report hsy.fi/fi/asiantuntijalle/vesihuolto/ved.. Literally none of the locals buy bottled water for drinking.
2019-08-07 20:55
xD, did not understand much, I do believe in Finland though. They take good care of their people at the very least.
2019-08-07 20:55
Yes 1000 e/month is really tight if you exclude rent and even if you would somehow exclude food too
2019-08-07 21:48
That sounds like an illegal wage unless you lack all education. Engineer's starting salary is something like 2800€:s. And if I remember correctly, you cant get a work permit unless you are deemed to be an expert and minimum salary for that is 3000€ per month.
2019-08-07 20:21
1000EUR net in finlnad + around 800 back at my home still stays + rent taken care by the company , surely sums upto around 2.5k. But, yeah looks like very less at first glance. But converting my money from home to here will cost me a good deal of charges :(
2019-08-07 20:21
There has been a lot of news stories here about companies exploiting Indian work force and underpaying them. They are not legally allowed to split the wage and take rent from it. Its 3000€ per month min or you cant get a work visa. Also remember that we have a 40h work week with paid overtime and double pay for sundays.
2019-08-07 20:31
Yeah, will keep that in mind. Thanks for info :)

Youre getting semi scammed, especially if youre a it coder guy, high demand for them here, low income Jobs like McDonalds or something like that get like 1600/month after taxes, so youre just above that with the apartment bonus, but yes u can easily survive with 1k per month, would recommend not eating at some fancy restaurants everyday tho but fast food is ok if you cant Cook, u should also get some heat up food (mixrowave or oven), cuz its mby more healthy (idk), and little less expensive. For traveling you can go to Estonia on a boat from helsinki, it literally costs like 10e, flight to sweden is like 80-120euro
2019-08-09 11:13
Thanks for the tip mate, will keep that in mind :) . Yep, Estonia looks like the best bet, at least for a start.

should be more than enough if you take cheap travel options and don't spend your money like a debil. Nordic countries like denmark, sweden and norway are extremely expensive though, so you should not travel there too much I guess. If you travel to eastern europe and to germany it's pretty cheap, I recommend seeing the czech republic.
2019-08-07 20:55
Yeah I think that is the way to go, finishing off nordic real quick and hopping to mainland Europe for longer trips to keep it light on the pocket.
2019-08-07 21:02
idk i hate going anywhere else than my hometown
2019-08-07 20:57
Cant blame you, already living in a close to ideal location for my taste. But I've been a little too adventurous all my life, to not roam around given the chance.

thats scam. Illegal pay, whether they are or not paying for your apartment its illegal. I'd advise you to search for better options. They are trying to exploit you for cheap.
2019-08-08 16:04
I understand its not good for sure, but how come its that bad? 1000(net) + house + 800(net) in account back in india. Maybe I am getting exploited a little bit, but it cant be that bad. Also if it has anything to do, I only have an year of xp.

If you are happy with it, go for it. It isnt that bad for you considering where you come from and it wouldnt be bad for my coutnry's average citizen. But for their standard its bad and illegal, they are exploiting you, if you dont have a problem with that and you dont want to look for better options, sure go for it, its enough for you to live comfortably and get experience in EU. But you should definitely look for better options after a year or two of worktime in finland.
2019-08-08 16:12
Yeah you are spot on about everything. Will try for better oppurtunities going forward. Have a great evening.

Well i dont think most people got that, then youre making like 2500+ after tax? Thats what normal people make basically, you could argue that u should get more as a coder but imo thats fine

You mean only 1K per month all charges comprised ? You'll not get to do a lot in Finland tbh, maybe you can grind money but it's laborfull. Thpo i rly wish you luck hope you can work it out. I mean with teh amount you have in a month travelling cost will be extremely high, like nordics & west EU are the best places but expensive, you will not able to really get around in Switzerland or Norway at all, but eastern EU for 1K p/m is pretty fucking good if you are adventurous.
2019-08-08 18:23
Thanks man. Yeah, I do understand nordic countries are fking expensive. Will make light work of them. I will do the planning once I get there and concentrate more on the mainland EU. But nordics have the best landscapes I guess :(

Norway is honestly top tier you will hardly find anywhere more beautyfull in the world imo, i imagine if you do it like a real traveller with a tent, money only for food, water you can go there but like i said you need to grind it. My country doesn't have fjords but we have the best mountains in EU, but search for hidden gems like Slovakia / Poland Tatras mountain range, the mountains of Czechia, beaches of Spain, Greece & Croatia are gorgeous and cheap. In general what i like is mountains, forests, fresh climate and not sunny shit but as an Indian you are way more accustomed to heat than any EU that ever lived so ez for you.
2019-08-08 18:36
Thanks for the info mate. As for taste, mine is almost same to that of yours when it comes to nature. Schengen does open up a good number of places to travel, will plan it once I get there as I am not sure how much I can save for travelling. Will create a new thread once I get set in Finlnad.

Air pollution =/= pollution, but u have nuke waste underground tho and where the population lives it's average pollution, but i agree Finland is a paradise, lacks mountaisn for me tho. Would give a solid 17.5/20.
2019-08-09 17:03
Also I get 800 into my home account, but I wish to save most of it as exchanging them to EUR and back will cost me a lot of charges. Lets see :)

That's why i suggest taking ur $ into a country that doesn't fuck u up on exchange rates and where it's easy to buy / invest. Btw the € is shit avoid it. Teach indian or something. Depends on where you come from but here in Switzerland we have a lot of Sri Lankese for example, in the UK you have huge Indian / Paki communities.
2019-08-08 18:39
stfu filthy indian third worlder shit, pls stay in ur own country
2019-08-08 19:00
What happened was not in my hands, whats gonna is probably tho. If I save enough, will travel to your place to watch northern lights and fjords :)

I wish you good luck in your travelling journey . It's surely not the best pay but I think you'll manage it. ;) ; you're welcome in Eastern - Central Europe , if you'll stick to train bus - travel in Schenghen area
