Why drive a manual in 2019?
 |
Pakistan ostraka
I honestly fail to understand why people buy manuals anymore in normal sized cars. Can someone explain to me why? because in my eyes automatic is simply easier and superior in almost every way.

Ehhh in the US it’s usually the same price. And used you’re going to pay more for a manual every time.

a manual gearbox doesn't need maintenance like the automatic (change the transmission oil every 70.000 km ) a manual doesn't need that
2019-08-15 19:56
Ehhh I mean manuals in general are more durable than the automatics made by that same brand. Doesn’t mean you should go with longer drain intervals. If you bought any American or Japanese car it’s easy to change the fluid and filter. European manufacturers love to make it harder than all fuck to do it.
2019-08-16 05:04
american cars are fucking bullshit compared to nice european cars like a smooth mercedes amg GTR
2019-08-20 17:17
You can turn left and right in them too
2019-08-21 04:31
no in america you only turn left, didn't you know?
2019-08-21 15:06
In America you don’t turn. Their cars don’t let you turn

2019-08-15 17:15
Is it? That’s why manufacturers have started making their cars without manuals. Aren’t F1 cars equipped with automatic transmissions that have paddle shifters?
2019-08-15 17:37
it is semi-automatic, u change gear urself but dont have to use clutch
2019-08-15 17:46
Which you do with a full manual transmission, partly the reason it’s slower than an automatic.

How does it save the engine more? Torque converter(automatic) vs Clutch(manual) have no effect over the engine's lifespan or reliability
2019-08-15 17:07
Better control – Automatic transmissions are designed to choose the best gear for any situation, but they tend to err on the side of caution, shifting to too high of a gear and wasting engine power.
2019-08-15 17:09
what control exactly? to drive your passat at 4k rmps 15 times around bus stop to flex on 15 yo girls? plus on automatic gears you can change it to manual as well, with the exception that u dont have to step on clutch everytime u want to change the gear

literally this
2019-08-15 17:06
repair cost of an automatic transmission is much higher compared to a manual
2019-08-15 17:02
Yes and automatic break down for shit. Manuel > automatic
2019-08-15 17:48
factually wrong in terms of maintenance. If you change the fluid in the torque converter, automatic transmission will last for ever under normal driving. Clutches are going to get glazed and wear out, syncros are going to lose teeth in manual. Anyways sequential manual transmissions are the best of both worlds and easily the best performance
2019-08-15 19:29
You have never tried french cars? IC
2019-08-15 19:36
ok, so garbage in garbage out, but I bet if the manufacturer's auto in binding and breaking the manual is worse about it. Unless maybe they are all quad disc monster clutches for the 75hp it is much more expensive to repair auto though, so maybe thats it, both are going to break so get the cheaper to repair haha
2019-08-15 19:39
Yeah I know. Automatic have become really good. But I live in Denmark and cars is taxed 150% so if you want a nice automatic car you have to spend 70-100.000 dollars. Edit: Yes, buying used old manuel is the only option. Some what cheap and cheap repair.
2019-08-15 19:42
oof. but that is like luxury or performance ride ya?
2019-08-15 19:42
That's a mother fucking performance ride.
2019-08-15 19:43
ya about the same here, nice daily drivers running like 30-40k, pickup trucks like 50k, then performance 60kish and up cant really get in for less than 20k with a new car now, unless you are purposely buying junk
2019-08-15 19:44
We might have a different view on a performance ride. My mother got a Skoda SUV Codiac, automatic. That shit was 100.000 dollars. A little less maybe.
2019-08-15 19:46
looks like a VW touareg, which would run about 50-60k new loaded here. 100k is getting you a jeep trackhawk here
2019-08-15 19:49
Exactly, that's a little more affordable. One of the good reasons to come to the states. You also have to option to buy used for 30k and has run 50k km and get some really, really Nice value for money.

2019-08-15 17:07
yes i need, im not beta
2019-08-15 17:12
you know, people are divided between these that want "device to take you from A to B" and real car. And this is absolutely personal thing, I would never understand someone who doesn't give a shit about driving his 20k$ "device" and letting eveything be automatic, yet I respect this opinion.
2019-08-15 17:13
You have the mentality of a 60 year old or a woman. Driving stick will get you there faster, its more fun and if you know how to drive you won't bother with driving manual. Also when your gearbox breaks it cost twice as much to change an automatic gearbox.
2019-08-15 17:18
faster car will get you somewhere faster btw. how is it possible that the best 0-60 times are done with automatic transmission?

I live in Australia and manuals are dying here as well (for normal sized cars). Maybe it's just a different driving culture in Europe that I will never understand because I don't live there...
2019-08-15 17:41
While I do not have hard data my guess is that on average people in Europe commute less miles and spend less time on endless stretches of road, this simply because population density on average is higher and also our cities are older so there is more smaller twisty roads. It is the same thing that means our cars are generally smaller, like for example not many drive trucks/utes unless they are contractors of some kind and family cars with V8's are rare since cars that big are rare. I would imagine that for many from the US or down under the European driving style would seem fast and hectic, where I know that at least some from here see the US/Aussie driving as slow and lazy. This is totally generalizing of course as there is big differences in Europe and also elsewhere, in fact even in a small country like Denmark there is differences where the big city is one thing and countryside is another.
2019-08-15 17:51
its because automatics are faster in quarter mile, and that is type of racing most people are doing in there car, who is fastest to the next stop light
2019-08-15 19:36
I'd say people can drive what they want. Too bad that a lot of people in Finland disagree with that. If you drive an automatic you're looked at like you're a freak. It's a fucking car transmission who the fuck cares :-D

It's so much more fun. There is nothing to do with your entire left side when driving auto.
2019-08-15 17:35
what control exactly? to drive your passat at 4k rmps 15 times around bus stop to flex on 15 yo girls? plus on automatic gears you can change it to manual as well, with the exception that u dont have to step on clutch everytime u want to change the gear

You replied to wrong guy I assume. I just said it feels like there's nothing to do with your left side, and the control of gear functions makes driving more fun.
2019-08-16 10:13
Nah, i just spammed the most retarded reply i've found here ;) Btw: I agree that manual is more fun
2019-08-16 10:19
Because people want to enjoy their cars, for most car is just a metal thingy thats gets you from one llace to another, for others they enjoy hearing the engine roar, driving aggresive and fast.
2019-08-15 17:37
Or being really smooth, hardly use the brakes so you still arrived quickly having used the minimum of fuel and not being stressed.
2019-08-15 17:42
manuals are cheaper, good drivers actually use the gearbox to slow down instead of overheating brakes. When going uphill autos stupidly change gear and make you lose power, downshifting for tight corners on a highway make the car suspension dig in more preventing you from spinning out, autos would make you use top gear and instead of digging into the corner the car lifts giving less traction, manuals aren't hard if you cant drive one you shouldn't be on the road as you cant do 2 things at once
2019-08-15 17:39
what control exactly? to drive your passat at 4k rmps 15 times around bus stop to flex on 15 yo girls? plus on automatic gears you can change it to manual as well, with the exception that u dont have to step on clutch everytime u want to change the gear
2019-08-15 19:23
downshifting in tight corner is horrible horrible advice, what I think you meant to say is short shifting up a gear so you arnt as loaded in the corner and less easily upset
2019-08-15 19:41
(and is a huge advantage over automatic transmissions, because you can go to the floor with throttle and not worry about it downshifting on you)
2019-08-15 19:56
no i meant downshifting, do it just before a corner then you can roll with the revs or with a little throttle, its much safer then being in a higher gear
2019-08-16 12:48
right, downshift to slow down, but right before you start turning (always brake in a straight line) right before you start turning you want to short shift up so you have plenty of band to accelerate out of the corner without upsetting the car or needing to shift out. You want to be neutral in your acceleration (neither braking or accelerating) when you turn your wheels, your car can either speed up/slow down or it can turn, it doesnt do both at the same time, and having your revs high means you are not very acceleration neutral, either you are on the gas and gaining or you are off and unloading speed, both are bad for turning once your weight shifts back under the car, you want that longer power band
2019-08-20 17:05
no this aint nascaaarrrr downshifting before a corner keeps the revs up and allows you to still turn the corner at a speed a higher gear would feel dangerous at. after the corner because of the gear change, you can now take off faster than a higher gear. The way you are saying gives you a higher chance of spinning out on corners
2019-08-21 03:56
Easier is not always better. Everyone can make "food" in a microwave oven, but cooking requires a little more. With a manual you have more control and if the car handles just slightly better than a wet sponge, there is some fun to had with the extra control. Not saying a good auto with paddles can't be fun also, but not many normal cars have a good auto box and many have one that is at best really doll. Also there is some joy if mastering how to drive a manual and doing it well, it makes driving slightly less trivial. And it means you exercise your left leg while driving, mostly though if you're sitting in traffic and it is stop and go forever.
2019-08-15 17:40

LOL Seems like you wanna come across all clever and knowing, but really you're just showing your lack of knowledge when it comes to driving. Most automatics are nothing like manuals, so the manual shift thing on them is just not like what a manual at all. I am not gonna go explain it all to you, some of the other threads explains a little on what a manual brings and if you google you'll quickly find more.

2019-08-15 19:53
It is money expensive. Cars in DK cost retarded amounts of money due to taxes which is why most people drive manual. Also driving automatic feels like shit. YOU are not driving you are only steering. Having full control of reps and gea changes make the experience much nicer.

2019-08-15 19:23
I don't mind that I get that you can have fun if you're speeding, accelerating quickly, passing other cars, or even driving in general. But how does constantly having to remove your foot off gas, press clutch and change gear can be pleasant? It just doesn't make sense. You don't get any thrill doing it, nothing, just an ordeal of having to do something as repetitive and boring.
2019-08-15 19:27
I don't know, I drive manually from the very beginning. But after many years behind the wheel you do it instinctively without thinking about it. I think it's more a matter of habit. I can't afford the latest cars, but even if, I would rather buy something really old with manual because there is something beautiful about it.
2019-08-15 19:54
You certainly are right in this one - it might be complicated at the beginning, but after some time and multiple shifts, people get used to manual driving and probably will never forget it
2019-08-15 19:59
In auti, you go somewhere by car; In manuel, you drive it.
2019-08-15 19:20

2019-08-15 19:25

2019-08-15 19:27
why manual or automatic when you have electric
2019-08-15 19:21
-1 for this unless tesla with its best battery
2019-08-15 19:28
I prefer manual because it's more fun/engaging to drive but I enjoy driving too. I've tested driving a few automatic ones simply because most "test drive" vehicles tend to be automatic these days but always feel like something is missing driving an automatic, it's definitely more simple but at the same time more boring too and to me fun >>>>>>> added effort in this case. Paddle shifters simply doesn't compare to a good manual transmission. I think only those who has only driven automatic their entire life or simply don't find much joy in driving (cars are for taking you from A->B as easily as possible type ppl) are likely to not like manual gearbox.
2019-08-15 19:37
manual tons more fun to drive than automatic
2019-08-15 19:29
who has more fun: someone driving in gt-r accelrating to 100km/h in 3 seconds and being able to pass every car on the street or someone driving shitty 20 years old skoda and, not being able to accelerate up hill, but hey, he's driving a manual so he's having lots of fun, by having to downshift two times in order to drive up hill
2019-08-15 19:39
personally driving with automatic makes me feel that im missing something that why there isnt 3 levers for my feet. i would like to drive with high speed/accerlation car but if i have had that kind of money i would buy myself a supra
2019-08-15 19:43
maybe you're too used to driving manuals
2019-08-15 19:44
and manual = hot girls too here is the lifeline of how people and up to drive manual 1. bicycle with over 18 gears ofc 2. moped that has 6 gears and ofc but some power to it and feel the power for the very first time 3. worst car u can get so u have 3 times money worth of that car 4. u r at job, see a supra going past ur office and being like damn and buy urself a supra :)
2019-08-15 19:47
new model of supra or the older need for speed one

2019-08-15 19:50
2019-08-15 19:50
thats a nice supra but imo its kinda ruined
2019-08-15 19:52
Comparing two cars at different ends of spectrum isn't a good example.
2019-08-15 19:54
that was more of addressing what people are saying, that there's no fun in driving automatic cars, meanwhile they'd have much more fun in automatic lamborghini or ferrari, than they'd have in manual skoda
2019-08-15 19:56
That's true, but comparing similar cars with manual and automatic would make more sense. Btw, the guy with Nissan GTR will become stressed while driving in start stop traffic thanks to it's acceleration, whereas the Skoda driver will be less tensed despite having a manual.
2019-08-15 20:03
if you get used to a car that's not a problem at all, it's not like you push gas pedal a little and it goes 100 instantly, there's surely a fine gradation when it comes to the gas pedal I can agree that shitty car with automatic transmission might be bothersome, especially if it's some weird economy mode with delay and much less responsive than manual transmission. But any better car with automatic transmission, especially the semi automatic one, is better than manual, due to the fact that you can do the same things without being worried about having to press the clutch all the time
2019-08-15 20:06
Agreed, semi automatic offers best of manual and automatic depending on the mode we choose.
2019-08-16 03:38
u would understand if ud ever driven sports car
2019-08-15 19:31

2019-08-15 19:38
y the best ones has 😎 +paddle shifters=manual
2019-08-15 19:39
it's still called automatic, I don't think that anyone has made the distiction here between regular automatic and automatic with paddle shifters. I haven't seen many cars in poland which were purely automatic, most of them have paddle shifters
2019-08-15 19:40
semi-automatic* downshifting is better in full manual imo
2019-08-15 19:43
by the time you downshift in manual your rpm go down a little in comparison to semi automatic in which it happens right away, plus the fact that you have to later on let your foot off the clutch doesnt make it really smooth, it kinda jerk when you let off the clutch and get like 3-4k rpm

2019-08-15 19:47
+1, they usually don't have something other to brag about.
2019-08-15 19:51
It is a more fun experience as I've heard(I've only driven manuals so I dont know how automatics are),you feel like you are doing something,it is a bit of an achievment. You feel the car,its like you are connected with it while shifting etc But in a practical sense automatics are better since they are a lot easier to drive, they are much better when you are in a traffic jam, starting the car is easy, both on flat ground and on hills especially.
2019-08-15 19:49
+1 for first two points. But I disagree with you regarding automatics being better than manuals. Even if they offer convenience over manual, fuel economy is their weak link. If you floor throttle in car with automatic transmission, the car will drink fuel like a thirsty athlete. Also, automatics are so complex that maintaining them will be a pain in long term.
2019-08-15 19:51
Full automatic and CVT transmissions are lame to drive. It's for people who don't enjoy driving or feel that manual is difficult to use. But Iove semi automatic transmission, with paddle shifters..... it'll be like playing a racing game with steering wheel and pedals.

Becouse in manual you are in control yourself, you can change the gear when you want or need. I have had 1 automatic car too and yea its pretty good in traffic in big cities, but beside that i dont see much of need for automatic. Automatics also consume more gas, and have worse acceleration
