I'm both, that's why I talked about both countries.
To be honest, it depends on several things: Accent, Region, Respect, TV. That the first ones that come to my mind.
- Accent: Very subjective but I have to admit that A lot don't like the French accent (That's my case, I have no problem with people disliking mine, that's just my opinion).
- Region: Depending on the region of France, you have a completely different behaviour. Paris is obviously the worse. The north (Bretagne/Normandie/Pas-de-Calais/Ardennes) is often way better. Even though, there are obviously a lot of exceptions.
- Respect: We have a lot of French students in my town because they can't study what they want in France and we welcome them arms open. There were a lot of guys that had no respect for Belgium, keeping everything close the France, destroying flats and apartments, leaving like a thief with the furniture, a totally disrespectful behaviour that you can also see with the WHV in Australia where a lot of people try to keep their "allocation de chômage" while being abroad and then trying to leave Australia w/o paying their last rents. I met great friends here from France and on my way around the world as well, but there is a bunch of idiots and bastards that blackens the board.
- TV: The problem with your TV canals is that they are only giving information about France in the first place. If they cover an event such as any Worldcup, let's say that France won the 3rd place earlier in the day and we have the final. If we watch TF1, right after the final, we will have 5 minutes on the winner and then reports about "the path of Team France", and then "Interview of the whole team", and then "what did the government do to make it work that good". Maaaan, please, we want to know more about the winner. That France-centrist behaviour from your TV canals is really ennoying. You are a larger country than ours so you cover more events but it's disappointed not to have other information than on the French Team.
Anyway, all that aside, it creates an idea that French people are only thinking about themselves, are cocky, ... I don't believe that it's true obviously but that's a stereotype that is really hard to combat as we see it on a daily basis.
