And then he drops the AK for an AWP and loses the round in a 1v1. I don't understand why he does that, he's still great with rifles. WHY

Well he did just clear mid then plant so didnt expect him on the left side of the scope all of a sudden. Smart play from JW to just go hide like nub then move when bomb is planted. He obviously expected him to walk through either mid late or tunnel after the plant, so if he walks out, checks mid and holds it, now he only have to focus on checking tunnel after 10 sec and ez win.
