So ESL rather have 9k afk viewers and a massive drop in viewers, just to have some black and white montage showing for about an hour, than having all viewers stay and put in actual content during the waiting time? Is it really that hard to get player interviews, analyzing games or having someone just "podcast" about CS for 1h? I am fairly certain most talent is paid by the whole event or by hour and not just when they actually do their job. So why not put up something interesting? This isn't just ESL, it feels like all productions do this. Can't we just have some nice desk segment for the Hard-core fans or some sort of "csgo Pro school" playing? They have pro tips on their YouTube channel. Can't they put some of them up their instead of shitty music and an uninteresting photo montage? Just adding something would most likely up the numbers and therefore get them more money from their sponsors.

I agree, another thing they could do is just play the next match earlier since it is in the same venue with the same people awake at the same time.

sure, depends on situation. This is a lan but I don't think there is any audience, so it would be possible. But might be some argument with the sponsors who expect somewhere between 6 and 9 hours of actual stream.

I'm positive I saw something on TT about it being fixed times (from an analyst/caster), as in, they have set times to start, unlike usual events that have back-to-back(set times for next match(es) are aproximate), which has both negatives and positives, like, you don't have to sit afk waiting for the match to start, but the current match could go into something like 5OTs or have a massive tech pause and the next 2 teams have to wait a lot to play their match. But yeah, they could at least do something "useful" with their downtime, if nothing else, show a bunch of highlights from past events or their tips or something. Or have Spunj the madman<3 rant for that time, I love his rants.

ESL have 6 games each day. That means about 3 breaks of this kind. Am I going to take 3 showers a day? This is just annoying, and as I mentioned it isn't just ESL, it is all big productions. I reacted to it first in StarLadder Berlin where they managed to put in a great info segment during Woxic's tech pause in one game, but had like 45 minutes of nothingness between maps and between halfs.
2019-10-14 06:27
Why don't you just go to the channels that you mentioned in your original post? The whole point of downtime is to have a break from content, and if you don't feel like taking a break, you've got the entire fucking internet to look at for CS content

The problem isn't for me. I am wondering why the production allow this. They lose viewers and therefore money. I can just log in and watch the vod if possible and just skip all they add on. I can watch all cs and non-cs related stuff on the internet at any time I want. But if they want as many viewers as possible when there isn't any live match, they need to have something better than a photo montage and shitty music.
2019-10-14 07:48
It costs extra money, and I highly doubt the extra viewers at the opposite of prime time is going to make them more money.

It doesn't have to cost extra. They already have ESL pro tips on their youtube channel. Why not just do that? They also have paid their analysts already, so why not ask them to just talk about whatever they want for 40 minutes?
2019-10-14 06:28
How do you know how the analysts are paid?

Would you do their job if you had to be in the same place for weeks and only get paid by the minutes or hours your "on air"? I dunno 100% how, but they are paid either by hours on site or by a full weekend (fixed rate). I read it in an interview and have heard different talents talk about it in various podcasts

+11111111 I highly agree, such a fail, they can utilize their viewers with content, keeping csgo alive. It's 2019 for God sakes esl!!

yeah, because for me, I miss out about first 4-5 rounds because I go doing something else when I see the break montage.

too many events, who cares when its every weekend.

They should care because they lose viewers and money because of this.
2019-10-14 06:29
so they can run ads for a straight hour

sure they can do that. Won't make them more money though. Usually they have some sort of ads in the overlays for the montage.
2019-10-14 06:29
Who cares about anything else than the actual match itself? You sound extremely sweaty

For people who just care about the match it doesn't matter whatever is between the rounds, halfs, maps or matches. For those of us who enjoy the deeper content or wanna see some back-stage content (interviews, pranks, background stories, etc...) it does matter. I think there are more people interested in some sort of content than just a montage.

Like now! Inbetween map 1 and 2 they had a few minutes break (understandable so all casters and analysts can get some water and perhaps a snack or fruit to be able to stay concentrated and focused for the next map) and then they have a live interview with one of the players. Amazing. Doesn't cost more, doesn't take much more, but give so much more content for the viewers to watch! More of this!
