How to stop falling asleep during a lecture?
 |
United Kingdom Megamo10
I will be wide awake, then the next second (feels like a second), I will have woken up from a microsleep, my head lolled backwards, gasping for oxygen. This happens like 5 times every hour. It's not that the content is boring. It's when they waffle and speak too slowly...even if I get 8 hours sleep or 5, it still happens.

Most people do that just because they enjoy it, some 'addicted' (I don't really know shit about it). So if you enjoy what you do why would you "save time" on it. But yeah, everything got to have line

Consistent micro-sleeps when you're not sleep deprived can be a bad sign. Talk to a doctor about this as soon as possible.

2019-10-16 13:00
I've only had micro sleeps once and it was when I was watching a south park episode. I had never experienced them before and my mind was blown how 5 minutes could just pass in what felt like a blink of an eye. Anyways, it could be very dangerous if you have a micro sleep while driving for instance.

No I never get it whilst driving. I am very focused rhen6
2019-10-16 13:00
Rhen6? You said you're gasping for oxygen after your micro sleeps. You might have sleep apnea like 27HM72 suggested, it affects the quality of your sleep, so even if you get 8 hours it's actually way less in terms of quality.

Then* ok not all of the time I wake up. After a normal sleep in by bed, I never gasp. Only sometimes maybe half of the time. When I abruptly wake up in a lecture. I feel weird and sort of gasp. It sounds like I'm saying something out loud or making a loud noise, but no one seems to hear it.

Sleep apnea or something else that affects the quality of sleep.

That makes sense. He did say he is gasping for oxygen during his micro sleeps. Maybe he has sleep apnea.

You need to have consistency at your night sleeps. Sleep at the same time and try to wake up at the same time everyday, try to not sleep in the middle of the day. That way your body will know that the classes are not the time to sleep and you will be healthier and will sleep better, even if you only sleep for like, 6 hours. It takes from a week to a month to feel the effects from this, but its worth it.

Just do meditations. Letting your body feel as light as possible, you will suddenly fall asleep. I had so many issues with sleeping early, and not being tired, but its just simple as that. Just close your eyes, have a meditation session if you need (Theres a lot on youtube, i use one in my alexa, from headspace), and it you literally have you sleep, sometimes it takes a little bit of time, but just try to phase out from all your thoughts.

Well if your parents are rich and they are giving you their business then who cares, or if you're ok with being a nurse or a waiter, or if you're a genius like Steve Jobs was - then you don't need them anyway. Otherwise if you're not plain stupid you should understand that you won't get paid a great deal if you have no degree.

You are dumb, if you do want something you just do whatever it takes. If you dont - you dont, you find excuses not to, you fall asleep etc, unless it's a medical issue which is dumb to discuss on a forum full of undergrowns.

most of the time we feel sleepy due to lack of oxygen during lecture (lots of people in room results in carbon build up). what you can do is lessen the amount of people by killing them

bruh it happens to me all the time. (less nowadays) 1. Go outside for fresh air after the 1st part of the lecture during the break 2. Drink water before/during. 3. Be interested in the subject 4. Study the lecture materials before the lecture. 5. reap profits of wide awake lecture experience
2019-10-16 18:10
You have microsleep because you have accumulated tiredness, one 8 hour night of sleep or 5 hours of sleep doesn't erase the accumulated tiredness. I would say, if you are tired: 1- Less screen, and no screen time the last 30 minutes before sleep, 2- 5 minutes exercice to "wake-up" your body every day as routine, 3- Hydration: Drink regularly during the day (normally 2 liter per day) 4- As stated by #96, oxygenation. Go get some fresh air 5- Do the necessary preparation to be interested in the lecture (study before, review materials) 6- Also as #95, posture and breathing correctly are quite underestimated.

Bring a water bottle to the lecture. If you ever start to fall asleep, stand up, drink water, then sit back down. Take notes on everything on the screen to stay awake.
