Exploring and colonizing the solar system as one species.
2019-10-23 00:05
Maybe we should raise the standard of living to a certain level before we start thinking about galactic colonisation? If we're going to seriously start galactic colonisation, shouldn't we do it as a planet, rather than as nations?
2019-10-24 04:40
If we had to wait for that we would never get anywhere. Living standards have been raised non-stop since the dark ages, so when is it good enough?
2019-10-24 10:34
Of course we would, just because we're not colonising the galaxy, doesn't mean we still can't use resources from space. Like that moon base harvesting Helium-3 for fusion energy, for instance.
2019-10-24 19:06
For sure. Maybe US and EU would work together a bit more like it was before trump. I miss those times.

The materials on the moon can be used to construct the moon base partially, and can be collected for novelty (could make some money back selling it off), but that would not be a main draw. The main draws are research only possible in space (and are easier on the moon base than the ISS, such as constructing new telescopes), and creating a jumping off point for future expeditions, possibly to create a colony on and terraform mars. It's also possible for a base to make travel to and from the moon much cheaper and easier.

so you're telling me that pretty much the only couple reasons why we should waste time money and resources building a moon base instead of fighting actual issues here on earth is so that we can sell novelty rocks and allow rich people to travel for moon day trips more easily lol

SO YOU'RE SAYING SO YOU'RE SAYING SO YOU'RE SAYING SO YOU'RE SAYING SO YOU'RE SAYING SO YOU'RE SAYING No that's not what I said. Becoming an interplanetary civilization will be the greatest step forward in human history, and a moon base is the first step to that.

the only reason we havent gone back to the moon for so long is because we dont need to, it was a great achievement but thats it. we have countless issues like climate change and such that would be much more worth focusing on so that shit is all good here instead of making a moon base to sell rocks.
2019-10-23 00:08
Develop fusion power to get rid of carbon fossil fuels. But hey you need He3 and there is barely any on Earth but plenty on the moon. So get to the moon to save the earth climate. Mine asteroids to stop polluting the earth with mining. But hey you need to refuel your ship without spending all of it to get rid of earth gravity while gravity is so little on the moon. So get to the moon to save earth from pollution.

but earth comes before the rest. sure if some elon musk wants to do it fine, but no point trying to bring political powers together for it now lol
2019-10-23 00:10
Well political powers are slow and bureaucratic but that does not mean we should not work together to explore the solar system. And what Elon Must said is just true, we should solve problems here on earth, but we need something to be exited about as well. So yes we should build this moon base and we will.

Eventually we will be colonising the solar system. Mars, Titan and maybe more. This is the starting point, before we look at interstellar travel.

The moon is a good place because it has no atmosphere and very low gravity. No need for a booster if you're launching a spacecraft from there.
2019-10-23 00:23
Yes, plus the ice at the poles
2019-10-23 00:25
No we won't colonize mars ever. Because it is pointless. For titan I can't say but I don't see much point either. And if interstellar travel ever happens, we, our countries and anything we know will be long time gone when it could happen.
2019-10-23 23:14
Of course we will colonise mars lmao, NASA are already planning on going there, it will happen at some point. And people might've though Isaac Newton's discoveries were pointless centuries ago but they are some of the foundations of physics. Colonising our solar system is required as a learning step if we wish to visit planets at other stars, even if it happens a long time in the future.
2019-10-23 23:20
NASA is planning to explore it with manned mission at best. And that's absolutely not colonization. No one ever though Newton's laws were pointless ever as far as I can say. Also you wouldn't learn anything relevant for an interstellar colonization by colonizing Mars you can't do on many other, more interesting solar bodies. Again Mars colonization is pointless. Titan add the thick atmosphere, and a possible sea landing which is already better to learn things. A manned mission again, at best. But it is way too low in energy to be colonized by humans.
2019-10-23 23:39
I know it's not colonisation, I'm saying it will happen eventually. And I'm not saying you think Newton's laws are useless or anything. I'm saying they were an important discovery for the foundations of physics, and if we want to colonise planets far away, we definitely have to start in our solar system. And NASA scientist were saying that colonising, not just visiting, Titan, was a better option than Mars, too. Can't remember the details, though.
2019-10-24 00:18
Colonizing Mars really is not certain. My guess is that manned missions will turn out to be much harder than we realize, let alone staying there. Titan is fascinating for scientific research but it's like -200 C, it's raining methane. and gravity is weaker than on our moon. There're probably an sub-surface ocean of water, so maybe there is life out there. NASA will be launching a very cool Titan mission with a nuclear powered drone, that will be exciting.
2019-10-24 11:29
Sorry mate but again there is no point in colonizing any big solar bodies except the moon. 0, none, nada, aucun. Each single one of them comes with downside that will never outcome the possible benefit: too hot, too much pressure, too acid, too cold, too much exposed to cosmic radiation, too much gravity, too much exposed to Jupiter radiation, too cold, too cold, too cold. Remain the moon to develop space mining of He3, for refueling purpose, eventually farming or energy production and asteroids space mining of different resources from water to fertilizers to anything we mine on earth. That's it. Other, from Venus to Encelade will receive humans only for science or tourism purpose at the very best. But never for colonization.

SpaceX would have to drastically decrease the cost of the energy (aka fuel) needed to launch rockets into space. I very highly doubt they will able to make space travel “affordable,” although the ability to re-use rockets, which they seem to be able to do well, will at least make any space travel they do cheaper. Not cheap, but cheaper. As in millions of dollars to launch a rocket that can carry no more than 1000kg. Rocketry will have to have a VERY major breakthrough before extra-planetary bases even have a chance to be viable...
2019-10-24 11:02
Fuel is the 'cheap' part actually, but sustaining a moon base will be hard and expensive, probably for a very long time
2019-10-24 11:09
They sent a 2000kg Tesla in space already. Apollo missions were way above 1000kg pay load. So are multiple charge launch on a regular basis by China, Europe, France, Russia, USA, etc.. I don't now where your 1000kg limit comes from but it is totally wrong

I kinda guessed, it was 4am and I was on mobile, I just knew the carrying capacity of the rockets set to return to Earth was not that high.
2019-10-24 18:19
You guessed wrong my friend since current mainstream rockets have a payload between 25 000 kg and 50 000 kg for orbit (and 3 time less for a moon landing). Saturn V (who sent people on the moon) was 2.5 stronger than our current strongest rocket (the falcon heavy). The starship, even if far from being finished, is designed to have a 150000 kg payload to orbit and the SLS from NASA for moon return 130000kg. TL;DR: past, actual and near future real number are from 25 to 150 time higher than your guess.

Albania. All we need to do is tell them that there is limitless supply of early 2000:s German made cars there and theyll do anything to steal em.
2019-10-24 09:32
There will never be a moon base nor a true space station like in movies. Earth is all we got and it's time people stop thinking sci-fi movies and books are real life. Kids grew up with Star Trek and Star Wars and now they work at NASA thinking they can achieve these things but it's just fantasy. Mark my words here and think back on them in decades to come. You'll say to yourself one day no matter how many years into the future "I remember that guy on HLTV saying we'd never have a moon base and here we are in 20__ and still nothing."
2019-10-24 12:59
Of course, full support for moon bases and space stations. As long as you don't allow muslims in.
2019-10-24 18:25
Bruh xD.
2019-10-24 23:28
Only good points to a moon base are to a make a political point, and to test out artificial environmental systems... which can be done just as easily on a space station... like we've been doing for decades now.
2019-10-24 23:37
as long as we still hate each other, bomb and kill each other, we are not ready to begin colonizing our solar system as a species, we still have problems within our race as humans, that's my opinion anyway
