Most people who go to the gym don't care how heavy you lift. As long as you have proper form and you're doing exercises that actually exist instead of some made up shit, people will respect you.
Or that was my experience at least. 1st time I went to the gym I was doing bicep curls with 3kg dumbbells. No one made fun of me, everyone was friendly, even had a nice chat with a few regulars.
Now I'm one of the regulars and do bicep curls with 15kg dumbbells. I don't look down on anyone who doesn't lift heavy, (Hell, I still wouldn't say that I lift heavy) and I believe that 99% of people don't look down on those people either.
You'll get there eventually. Just getting your ass to the gym and working on yourself is respectable enough in it's own right.
2,5kg on each side? For how many reps? If you are doing 10s with 22,5-25 you can probably do a single or more with 40 kilos
Nobody cares about other's weights in gym, only newcomers, because they're curious what weights do other people lift. You will get stronger eventually if you keep adding weights slowly.
